Maiden flight of the Aerofoam 90mm EDF Mig 17.
I ordered this Mig from Banana Hobby, I have been following it online for anwhile. It used to be sold through Hobby King under the Avios brand painted in a winter camo livery and it was discontinued. Banana Hobby had since picked it up and changed the color schemes and also upgraded some of the components.
Ready to build it, I opened the package and immediately removed the stock edf unit, esc and white box (servo box) and equipped mine with a JP 1400kv 8s 90mm edf, Castle 160hv, powered by SMC 3600 10 cell flight pack (6s and 4s in series weighing 820 grams). Rx is powered with a Castle Pro BEC run off a separate 450mah 3 cell pack.
Also ran the control surfaces on their own channels and maximized all the throws. I enabled tailerons and crow landing flaps, also have thrust reverse.
Even added a Freewing tail flame afterburner which I glued to the JP tail cone with some etc silicone. I’m seeing a static load of 172 amps and 6200 watts at wide open throttle.
CG: Set it up to balance on the main gear favoring the nose so it will drop back onto the nose when tipped back onto the tail and released.
As far as I can tell, all the servos are metal gear except for the landing gear door servos which are plastic and one died after 4 flights so I replaced those with some analog emax metal gear servos I had on hand. (I tried a digital emax servo first but it kept buzzing) The landing gear sequencer must have been updated because I don’t have any of the issues discussed in other videos and posts on the forums…It works great.
Did the maiden flight and three more for a total of four flights. She takes off clean, flys nice and is predictable and stable….and for a guy that only started landing edf jets with landing gear on a runway for the first time last week, she lands pretty easy.
My model has the goofed up rudder, and it needed lots of right aileron trim to get it to fly straight. I was able to reduce the amount aileron trim buy adjusting the left elevator to induce some right roll, I’ll keep playing with sub trimming on the other control surfaces to try and spread the needed right trim around the whole airplane.
After getting it trimmed she flies very nice. The control surfaces (being small) of course aren’t super responsive…typical of all the mig 15/17 models I’ve ever flown. It is a pleasurable model to fly predictable and forgiving…very good and enjoyable….that is until you throw monster power at it.
So yeah, after getting it trimmed out and flying it around I was excited to see what the power combo I installed could do. It did not disappoint. Tons of power and the vertical is awesome. Approaching the upper end of the power range, the model hits a critical speed and the fuselage calls it quits and becomes unstable. I will put a gps in it to determine what that speed is but it is really moving. Flying straight at full throttle, it gets going faster and faster and then suddenly, it banks left all by itself, full right input cannot even counter the turn, even with tailerons enabled (though they do help). The only way to regain control is to back off the throttle…she quickly settles down and I am able regain control without any trouble. I feel like the wings and tail are not very rigid as compared to other models (Freewing, FMS). The wings almost feel loose when you grab them and wiggle them and the tail is flimsy and bendy (nevermind the goofed rudder)
After flight inspection also revealed the aluminum wing spar bent, probably during one of the “out of control high speed events”. I’m looking for a carbon rod to replace it with.
So that’s my only real complaint I guess, she cannot handle the speed generated when you add a lot of power. I’ll try it run it on 9s next week and see if it settles down and if it is still too fast, I suppose I’ll just do the 8s the edf was spec’d for.
My first thoughts on this model were that is sloppy, though to say that probably isn’t fair since I’m not flying it stock. (Though it is a bit sloppy 🤪) I think I’m just used to offerings from Freewing, FMS and others, where you can double or triple the power and the fuselage just takes it and performs.
Shortcomings aside, I really like this model. I’d even call it my favorite. It really does fly nicely at normal speeds and it just has a presence in the sky that draws your attention. I have most of the 80 and 90 millimeter EDF jets currently available and this is the one I am most excited to fly or just look at…In fact, I ordered up a second one to have on hand because I love it that much and would really miss it from my fleet if the unspeakable happened 😬. I understand why many of the other reviews of this model discuss all the problems with it but in the end, they say you should still buy it. If you like classic Migs and bigger RC jets definitely get this model, it’s worth the trouble.😁

I'm a fan of guys who like to add voltage. I have fans that run on as much as 22s. Question, are you measuring your amp draw? When playing with high power systems, a clamp on amp meter is easy to do a quick check and will save you money in the long run.
@ILLSMOQ
@ILLSMOQ Год назад
I like to go fast and experiment…. 22s must be something, I’ve never seen that. I’m using Castle Creations esc’s. I’m sure you’re aware, they log data and other parameters. Plus they can be way over driven in bursts and stay happy.
@leeliddle7021
@leeliddle7021 Год назад
Finding out your amps after you get home and read your data won't do you much good if you something isn't right with your system. For high performance electric power systems, real time amp readings are critical.
@ILLSMOQ
@ILLSMOQ Год назад
@@leeliddle7021 I agree 100%. Real time data is much better than after the fact data. I test on the ground before flight and review the data…not the same as in flight but it’s better than nothing and has served me well for years. Now days, telemetry is much easier to come by though. I have Avian esc’s in some models that show amps, volts, etc. The big Castle esc’s I use aren’t smart like the Avians… however, I noticed today Castle has a telemetry link…I’m going to buy one and try it out. What products would you recommend?

You lose control because once you get going that fast and use the same throws they are too much. It becomes extremely touchy at high speeds. You need a super low rates setting for high speed flying.
@ILLSMOQ
@ILLSMOQ Год назад
Thanks, I’ll switch to the lower rates on the speed passes next time. But I’m pretty sure that’s not it. I’m really not giving it aileron input. It flies stable even going fast…once it hits that critical speed she just looses it and banks left. But yeah, I’ll try it next time on low rates and see what happens.. thanks for the tip!

Looks to me like it might be right at the edge on CG. Makes pitch very sensitive and gets worse the faster you go.
@ILLSMOQ
@ILLSMOQ Год назад
Hmm, I wonder. I believe you are correct on the cg but I’m not sure that’s the problem with the loss of control at speed. I actually moved the flight packs back last outing, so she teeters equally on the mains, flying this way she lifts off at take off more readily, flies basically the same (still has the hard left bank at high speed) and when she comes in to land the nose pitches up with less effort. But I’ll definitely move the flight packs forward to test your theory thanks! The model is currently undergoing maintenance. I’m adding carbon strips to the wings and tail, she’s also getting a paint job. Will test the effects of the reinforcements before testing moving the cg forward.
@leeliddle7021
@leeliddle7021 Год назад
Of course it's hard for me to tell just from video, but a cg too far aft will accentuate any control movement or surface twist, even in the roll axis. I think you're wise to strengthen the wings. They definitely could be twisting at high speed. Also when you try to correct with opposite aileron, that puts even more pressure on the wing twist, which limits aileron effectiveness. One last thought. If you get an unwanted roll at high speed, try opposite rudder instead of aileron. It might help, and it won't be putting extra twisting force on the wing.
@ILLSMOQ
@ILLSMOQ Год назад
@@leeliddle7021 there are creases in the wings and one of the horizontal stabs in the tail shows some nice stretch marks in the paint so I’m sure there has been a lot of flexing and bending happening. The model came with an aluminum wing spar that was bent a half inch. I’ve since replaced it with a strong carbon piece. I’ll play with the rudder as well thanks!

Nice video! I bought this same plane a few months ago and I ran into the same issues as you as far as excessive trim for ailerons required and questions about the c.g. I watched r.c. geeks review of the hobbyking avios version of this, which is the same plane and it helped me alot. I set my c.g at 300mm but couldn't keep the front wheel on the ground. so I moved it forward to probably 285 or 290mm and that is a good compromise. What are you running yours on? it looks and sounds great! I set mine up for 8s but couldn't squeeze my fat 75c 4s x2 batteries in it, I had to buy some HRB 50c batteries that were thinner. The power was compromised a little but still better than stock. Somebody mentioned the tail sit test, this is bogus! it has nothing to do with c.g! Dont trust it! Somebody threw this out relative to the freewing f-86 years ago and people have been citing it since then! Keep up the good work!

Hey buddy, it’s a cool jet for sure. Does yours do the hard uncontrollable left turn at high speed like mine? I wrote a novel in the description going over my setup. The edf is a JP 90mm 8s unit…I’m running it on 10s. It does sound awesome, I love it! Thanks!

@@ILLSMOQ Thanks for the "book", it was very informative! Sorry I missed that! Mine does not do this but it isnt that fast, only 108 mph.thats fast enough for this. I am using the FMS 1500kv 8S setup and the fms 120 amp speed controller. Mine is down on power a little bit because of using 50c batteries but that is all I could fit in there. I do have a gyro in mine, maybe that helps. like you said there is just something about it. I have always liked these planes. I kicked myself for not buying one when hobbyking had them. I will tell you I set mine up on a flat table and took measurements around the wings, to the parting line from the mold. The wings are the same both sides. I thought one might be warped or twisted; they aren't. So like you said maybe the problem is the rudder. Have fun, happy flying!

@@toddwatkins3211 Another thing I found after maiden day, the aluminum wing spar had bent a half an inch. I wonder if that affected the flying characteristics at speed. I found a carbon replacement on Amazon and it fits perfectly,super stiff too. Had to trim about 1.5” from the length. Will try it out with the new spar this weekend. 10mm Carbon Fiber Tube 10mmx6mmx500mm Twill Matte for 3D Printer Axis 2pcs a.co/d/h5Hck2J

@Todd Watkins have you considered the 1850kv FMS metal fan? I use that on 7s in my Venom with the same 120A esc. It produces the same thrust as the 1500kv on 8s but the venoms battery is so small that the 7s just fits snuggly in. It's a big improvement over the stock 6s 3kg thrust.

Does the Mig 17 seems to be some nose heavy? Thx.
@ILLSMOQ
@ILLSMOQ Год назад
Keep in mind I am new to landing models with landing gear but my set up does not feel nose heavy as far as I can tell, it seems to have a broad range for acceptable cg, I’m still playing with it but there is plenty of room in the battery bay to move the flight packs. I’m flying with 3600mah and 4400mah 10s. (6s + 4s) and moving the flight packs fore and aft is not difficult. Really enjoying this model. She’s currently undergoing refinishing.

@ILLSMOQ
@ILLSMOQ Год назад
@@yf222000 I feel like my favorite “cg” is almost neutral when doing the tail sit test, favoring the nose. I other words, with the model ready to fly, lift the nose so the tail touches the ground, release and the nose slowly drops. I prefer the way it flies with that cg. This model is very forgiving with regard to CG. Nose heavy she will land nicely…however with a more neutral CG she will come down more softly.
