I grew up next to RAF Notholt which was a hurricane station during the war and I got used to spitfires, hurricanes and Lancaster's gathering there for London flyovers. One year they had a 109 and a Mustang fly in and it was awesome to see them all flying off together to an air show somewhere. You could hear the difference between the engine sounds. They all sounded and looked amazing. My dad, who fought in the war made a joke that the last time he heard that sound he was ducking for cover in a muddy ditch. He was impressed and I could see a tear in his eye. I'm so glad that both countries keep these amazing machines flying. ✌️❤️🇬🇧

In 1964, Operation Steelpike I was an amphibious landing by the 2nd Marine Division in southern Spain. I was a 2d Lieutenant USMC, in command of a rifle platoon. As we prepared to conduct a helicopter assault over the beach, Spanish air force planes were in the air, including ME 109s and P 51 Mustangs. It was a thrill to see these warplanes operational. Subsequently, in 1965, while deployed to the Dominican Republic, I, and the other Marines in the same area, had the rare distinction of being strafed by P 51s being flown by the Dominican forces.

The ONLY original Bf 109 to fly since the mid 1950s was the RAFMs Bf 109 G-6/Trop Black 6 ALL the others are converted Buchons or replicas based on very minimal, if any, original airframe parts. When you think about the fact that Germany was unable to obtain large quantities of high octane fuel during the war it is even more impressive that they were still able to get performance close or equal to the allied aircraft running 100 or even 130 octane. @@drstrangelove4998 yes but the Merlin was normally aspirated and carbureted not charged and fuel injected like the DB so the higher compression and fuel octane rating was necessary for performance.
@SvenTviking

Firstly, they could only achieve equal performance by using water/methanol and nitrous oxide injection with limited quantities of high octane fuel. This was on a limited amount of Bf109k. The Mustang equalled it’s performance with a smaller engine while the Spitfire XIV exceeded the k model performance in every way, As for German engineering, did the build a successful heavy bomber? Or a powered gun turret? Did they develop the Cavity Magnetron? Or the Atomic bomb? Nope.

In my view it's a problem since this symbol is not only referring to the Nazi regime as such but also to the Holocaust. Thanks to computer-assisted manufacturing they can now easily produce lost components. In the 1940s they just cranked engine parts out as fast as possible and used whatever metal was available Longevity wasn't an issue because the aircraft would last less than a month in Frontline service

@@jamesricker3997 I was wondering how much could now be made that way, Quite a few years ago I read some articles about a 109 and a Mitsubishi Zero being restored and the restoration folks were scouring the pacific islands and Europe for any parts they could find so an original engine could be rebuilt and fitted to the airframes...they even fished discovered crash sites for usable or repairable crankshafts,blocks, Cylinders and sleeves..I was just amazed they were able to get the planes running

@@jamesricker3997 About a year ago i was reading some translations of daily reports from different Jagde-schwader flight groups and the attitrition of available flightworthy aircraft on a daily basis was pretty dismal . You would read where a group commander would say that they left with 20 someing aircraft and perhaps 11 would be forced to return due to mechanical difficulties. A question was asked as to how many hours before a rebuild was needed and i was astonished @ how low the hours were but I cannot remember ...seems like it was sub 200..or perhaps even less. As to armor it was said that Axis and Allied both required tending to practically daily. Guess we shouldnt be surprised it is after all a very hostile environment and equipment is pushed to the limit.

The Pilot who is flying this Messerschmitt 109 today is one very lucky person. There are only a handful of these aircraft (if that) still in flight worthy condition approved by the FAA and other organizations around the world who monitor and regulate aircraft in their respective nations to give demonstration flights, air shows, test flights, general flying, etc. To be able to take this warbird up and experience it in actual flight and feel what the pilots of WWII felt when they took up their machines. That alone is priceless! Designed in the mid 1930's by Willy Messerschmitt, the ME109 (Original Designation until being changed to BF when Messerschmitt took full control of his company), the Messerschmitt BF109 was one of the most advanced fighter aircraft in the world, probably THE most advanced at that time. Even though the aircraft was difficult to land due to the close proximity of it's wheels to each other compared to other aircraft that had a much wider stance, thus helping to land easier. Many 109's were lost in training accidents which also killed both experienced and student pilots. Even with that attribute the 109 was a dream to fly and almost every pilot who flew it, fell in love with it. Pilot's stated it was like wearing the airplane and you felt like you were a part of the machine itself. This was due to the very close conditions while inside the cockpit. The Pilot had to master where all the controls, switches, levers, pedals, handles, throttle, gun sights, trigger for weapons, and many other things. Needless to say, being a Pilot of an ME/BF109 was a very busy position to be in while in flight. They also had to closely monitor there fuel levels at all times, which was another weakness of the ME/BF109. The 109 was a thirsty bird and she only could fly about 400 miles in order to conserve fuel enough to dog fight if and when necessary. Some 109 Pilot's had to force land in Allied or neutral Countries due to running low on fuel and rather than ditching the plane, they chose to land at the closest airfield, praying that the solders and civilian watchmen on duty would not fire at them with anti-aircraft guns or even rifles, shotguns, pistols, and any other ground to air anti aircraft weapons they could get their hands on. The 109 had more official "kills" of any other fighter aircraft in all of aviation history. That record still stands and most likely will ever be broken due to more modern stealth weaponry and drone and unmanned aerial vehicles being used in lieu of sending manned aircraft into combat. The "unmanned" and drone trend will most likely continue into the future and eventually only unmanned aircraft will be used for both war and non-combat situations far into the future. The 109 was also the most produced fighter aircraft in aviation history with thousands of aircraft being produced by Germany for the Luftwaffe. Germany had the most advanced aircraft in the world at the time, especially around 1936 when the Luftwaffe was unveiled by Hitler to the world. The USA, Britain, France, Russia, and many other nations were shocked at how advanced and how large the Luftwaffe was and they all knew that Germany had the most powerful Air Force in the world at that time. This propelled the USA, the UK, and France, along with other nations, to immediately put in design request and eventually large contracts for more advanced fighters like the Lockheed P-38 Lightning, the UK's wonderful Supermarine Spitfire, dive bombers like the Douglas SBD Dauntless, two engine fast Bombers like the B-25 Mitchell, Douglas A-26/B-26 Invader, large four engine long range bombers like the B-24 Liberator, the Boeing B-29 Superfortress (which was a highly advanced aircraft for it's time which required a large crew and large cockpit crew to operate the aircraft and fly it in combat), The Avro Lancaster, The B17, many other large four engine aircraft including transport and freight carrying aircraft, and finally specifically designed night fighter aircraft including upgrades to the Mosquito equipping it with RADAR and also testing more powerful weapons like rockets and very large caliber cannons fitted to the nose of the aircraft making it a formidable ground attack aircraft. The 109 got it's feet wet so to speak in the Spanish civil war. The 109 was in it's first variations and it performed exceptionally well in aerial combat including dog fighting and also ground attack and bombing missions. Germany was able to see how their combat aircraft actually performed in combat. Germany took what they learned from the Spanish civil war and formed fighter training schools using pilots such as Adolf Galland and Werner Molders and their experience in actual combat and they taught other pilots in Germany their tactics and skills. This served Germany well in the beginning of WWII as Germany smashed it's opponents with air superiority and the BF/ME109 was at the forefront of almost every aerial engagement in WWII on both the easter and western fronts and also gallantly in North Africa where German Pilot Hauptman Hans-Joachim Marseille was able to obtain 156 "kills" using various models of the 109. Tragically, Marseille was killed in his BF109 "G" model which was a brand new aircraft which had known mechanical problems at the factory but was pushed into service, Marseille knew there was something wrong with his aircraft just by feel, as he had test flown several different models before his "G" was given to him to use in combat operations. Marseille was on a flight with his "G" model 109 and had catastrophic engine failure which caused the airplane to bank over into an immediate stall and Marseille lost control of the aircraft which plummeted towards the earth as people looked on. It appeared that Marseille attempted to exit the aircraft and deploy his parachute but he was to low in altitude and his body was found not far from his crashed aircraft's wreckage. Many of Marseille's contemporaries at the time and fellow pilots in the Luftwaffe said that Marseille had a "gift" for flying and a natural ability to fly aircraft and do aerobatics that most pilots would never dream of attempting including low altitude fly-by's during training and buzzing the tower frequently (another "no-no"). He also had excellent aerial gunnery skills which allowed him to shoot down multiple aircraft in one engagement. During one mission Marseille was able to shoot down 17 aircraft which is the highest amount of "kills" in one mission than any other pilot in all of aviation history. Had he not been killed in an airplane accident, he most likely would have surpassed Eric Hartmann, the highest scoring ace in history with over 300 confirmed "kills" in combat. Even Hartmann himself acknowledged that Marseille would have most likely surpassed him in the amount of aerial victories he had if he had survived the war. Marseille was like no other when it came to aerial combat and had an aura around him similar to what Manfred Vonrichthofen (i.e. The Red Baron) had until he too was killed in aerial combat. Marseille took risk at the right time and flew away when he knew he couldn't win in combat. This was an attribute of a skilled and wise aviator. On the other hand, Marseille was known to take extreme risks in combat and was very fierce when he engaged the enemy taking risk's that other pilots might not take in aerial combat. Pilots in his squadron would remain at high altitude while Marseille would single handedly dive into a swam of enemy aircraft and shred them to pieces singlehandedly flying back and forth with his guns a blazing. He was a very skilled aerobatics pilot which allowed him to defeat his enemy in almost every encounter he engaged in. Other Pilots said it was like watching an airshow because Marseille was literally flying circles around his opponents and scoring victory after victory, all in his 109. Hartmann, Barkhorn, Rall, Major Walter Nowotny (who also saw great success in a Focke Wulf 190, but was tragically killed in combat in a brand new ME262 jet aircraft), along with many many other pilots who used their ME109's with great success. Most of the remaining aircraft were scrapped at the end of the hostilities during WWII. A few nations continued to manufacture the BF109 under license and use them in their air forces. They are rarely seen in flight in the modern age. Hopefully these fine gentlemen will keep this bird in the air forever and pass it along to someone else who will continue to care for this rare machine and keep passing it along to further generations (or gift to the Smithsonian Institution or similar organization) to continue caring for this beautifully restored 109. It really needs to be preserved for future generations to enjoy into the future long after we are all gone. Thanks for posting!
