Maiko makeover

I've went to 四季 Maiko Henshin Studio in Kyoto last last week and the outcome and service were nice! I think I'll go there again if I visit Japan in the future.

She can really pass as geisha or maiko (after a little practise with walking with those nicely high shoes). :D Wonderful video! And wonderful make-over.

no they can also paint the upper lip, if you look at a lot of old world art geishas usually have the upper lip painted as well

That's awesome that you were able to fool people when you dressed up! If I ever go to Japan, I'm definitely doing this because I've always wanted to try on a kimono. I'd also want to see how many people actually think I'm a real geisha, LOL. :D

AWESOME - I remember doing that myself, but I didn't walk around town. I went to the one textile museum where they did the photoshoots, and had gone upstairs to the museum section so I could take a couple of additional pictures before I had to take it off, and there were all these Japanese tourists taking pics of me! *grins* How embarassing! Thanks so much for posting! :) Wish I'd thought to film it!

@Kkyyrruu I agree with you, I miss the older days in Japan when Geisha and Maiko were actually taken seriously.

It's called a "birra-birra." Not only a hair ornament, but also makes a pleasant chiming noise as they walk. So yea.. kind of like wind chimes ^^

It was more of an ordeal at first but it was good fun walking around the streets of kyoto.

Oh, I love her Kimono. It's so beautiful and it looks very complicated to put on but how do you go to the bathroom in that?

I like this video. Lucky they were able to do that. As for the hair part, my hair is long enough that I could probably do the hair up like that w/o the wig(my hair would make it look like I had a lumped under it XD ).

depending on the plan you choose it can run from about 90 dollars up to about 300.

I used to think at one time, that the maiko henshin should replicate the actual maiko makeup more accurately, now that I see this, I think they should have the differences, so the trained eyes can see the differences; though the beauty can always be seen.

I would look for the vidoes here on RU-vid "How to tie and Obi" and "how to tie a Nagoya Obi". Also Yukata Market Sakura has a link to their tying/dressing videos here fro their site . . . I can tie almost any of the bows in 5 min. or less with practice.

A geisha in means Artist. Geisha is a girl who serves tea and entertains in a realy nice tea house. It cost alot of money to be enertained by one. If you read or watch memoirs of a geisha it explains it all.

@peacegirllover maiko is the apprentice and doesn't paint the upper lip, and geiko/geisha witch is fully trained wears paints the upper lip and it's 芸子と舞妓と芸者

It looks like an elaborate process how long does it take from start to finish?

The process took about 30-40 mins but that is just for the tourists. I think a "real" Maiko might take longer

@1gorgeousbabe I have to say that after a while, the kimono, and all the layers that go into it aren't as bad as I had thought it would be. I am doing it for fun, and probably will never get to this level, but ain't them shoes somethin'? I AM thinkin' about getting a pair of those, and found a site that makes them for everyday use too! Under $100 a pair! And for "Miss 4'10" it will be a welcome change in altitude!

Geisha wear the collar lower in the back than other people :)

This is like Peking Opera for the street, hahaha. Those slippers look incredibly more awkward than flipflops.

The eye/lip makeup is a little sloppy compared to what other studios do.

Maikos and Geishas are different - the latter is more experienced, I was right; Maikos can only paint part of their bottom lip (I had seen it in a documentary when I made my first comment).

but "real" geishas got special kimonos for summer, in thin materials, and special ones for the cold during winter too? I read that somewhere. so it shouldn't be that bad!

Thailand has similar thing like this, just not dressing to be Geisha but dressing up as any royal women int he history.

the Geisha's I've seen the lips aren't quite like that o_0 maybe they do it just to decipher the difference so people don't actually think your a real one or it's just the way of the "houses" I saw. W/e xD. it's for fun =).

She was wearing socks with high sandals...plus i think the ancient tradition of feet binding originated in China not Japan.

@dfghjkkliytg : Full-fledged Geisha wear full lips, while Maiko wear the lotus-style lips. Still wrong, but I thought you should know the difference, haha

Eh could be preference of the wearer or could be that they do that on purpose so others know its a fake geisha or a tourist.

the eye make up was pretty bad. where are the pink and red eye shadow. well, the girl was cute and the boy friend/husband ? seemed happy (he was chuckling at the end of the video) at least, one happy customer !

this makes me a bit sad when watching all the grace and culture of the once upon a time geisha when applying makeup etc...all gone.

God I would be so embarassed to walk around in those shoes... I'm such a klutz, I'll fall off in front of everyone and make an idiot out of myself...

"Real geisha" appreciate the attention that tourists pay to their trade, since what they do is a DYING ART FORM. Tourists pretending for an afternoon of fun brings attention and funds to their trade. You won't hear them disparaging tourists for such a silly reason, in fact you might hear them PRAISE them for their attention to the art. Btw, you can tell the difference between tourist Maiko and real Maiko just by looking at them. Real Maiko aren't giggling schoolgirls who trip in the shoes.

They did the lipsticj western style. Geishas deont usually paint their whole mouth. They only paint their mouth the way it is suposed to look. i've heard that "good" lips resemble the lotus.
