When the idea of a Government of National Unity was brought up shortly after the elections, the leader of Build One South Africa, Mmusi Maimane, indicated they would not be joining.
He said they preferred to remain part of the opposition to ensure they can keep the government in check.
Maimane is now chairperson of the Standing Committee on Appropriations.
This committee’s core mandate is to examine government spending and budget allocations.
I sat down with Maimane to get his views on how it is to return to parliament no longer as leader of the opposition and his new role as a committee chairperson.
We also briefly discussed his new book, “Dare to Believe, Why I Could not Stay in the Day.”
