This video walks along the seawall from what we call Corner Beach by the Main Wharf, past the Marina, across the Navy Pier, and over to the Commander’s House.
There are tons of boobies and frigatebirds once you get past the Navy Pier. Also have a few pauses to look at the fishes and the table corals.

What the hell. Did they level every building on the island just to prevent squatters from settling on the island? I was there in 1964-65, long before the swimming pool and yacht club were added (and women allowed on island). I never imagined it would be so empty once I saw all of those changes to the island. Seems like such a waste, even the portable shrimp shack is gone.

I was there in 70-71 and the commanders house was no were near the ramps and piers shown. His house was just off the run way located on the main street.

I hope you don't mind me asking, but what was your activity on the island? Why was everything demolished when the island was once a town?

@@Ventureone2023 I’m in charge of the environmental restoration for Johnston. We visit every couple of years to collect soil and groundwater samples to see how the remaining contaminants are breaking down. The buildings were all torn down to prevent them from just falling down. Without constant maintenance they would not have lasted very long. Check out my Wake videos. There’s a couple that show buildings that have just been left and they very quickly become hazardous to people and wildlife.

@@AroundtheWorld-SallyandJames Your reply is amazing and I am grateful for it. I assume you are employed by either the Air Force or Fish and Wildlife. Is it possible to live there at present or is it too contaminated? Did you spend extended amounts of time on the island? It's unfortunate that the buildings were not maintained on a regular basis. The island's complete story deserves to be turned into a movie.

@@Ventureone2023 I work for the Air Force. We usually stay about 2 weeks when we visit. The island is clean enough to live and work on. There is a couple areas that still have fuel contamination in the soil and ground water. There is still a little contamination in the lagoon sediments near the agent orange storage area, but it’s quite low, barely above the EPA limits for residential use. Fish & Wildlife had their Crazy Ant Strike Teams living on island for about 10 years, but they all left about 5 years ago.

@@AroundtheWorld-SallyandJames I found out that the Crazy Ant Strike Teams were successful.

@@AroundtheWorld-SallyandJames Can you tell me what the buildings on the other islands or atolls are? The tower is present on one and the row of buildings is present on the other.
