Aaw, JK. Seriously I would move to make it so. These cats are absolutely beautiful, smart, playful, or snuggly (if you want!) The perfect companion, the perfect cat! But, gosh they can seriously EAT! Dang!
@@mickicalkins9303 They DEE-VOUR! I’ll be honest, my grocery bill haha... My girl has a vet appt in a few and I need absolute scientific clarification as to why she eats soooooo much. They beg for food a lot!
We adopted a Maine Coon from a shelter. Had no idea he was a Maine Coon. He was beautiful and had a great disposition. He has went from 11 pounds to 18 and eats like nothing I have ever seen. We have fallen in love with him. I went to look at dogs and left with Wolfy.
I have a 26 week old tabby female Maine Coon and I can safely say it’s thee most affectionate pet I’ve ever had from British blues to beagles . Ive never experienced love like it ❤️ 🐈
I just adopted a three year old tabby Maine Coon female, and she is the most affectionate cat I ever had too. I got her for my part-time affectionate regular tabby male. Originally I only wanted male, due to experience on them being much more affectionate, but boy am I surprised! She loved her new pal immediately too.
@@J.R.8 I just adopted a 3 year old torbie girl I think is a Maine coon mix. She’s super sweet, small, but has the fluffy silky fur, inner ear hair, giant paws with braidable toe hair, loves water, super curious, playful, wants to explore everywhere, hates closed doors, wants to be outside, doesn’t mind the snow or cold… I’m sure she’s got Maine coon in her.
Both of my male Maine Coon's died of cardiac problems with my second having to be put down at 2 years old. After 9 years of contemplation I finally decided to try one last time, this time getting a female. We recently brought her home at 12 weeks old. My husband said he was so happy for me I asked why he said because he knew it took me so long to decide and I was so heartbroken for so long after after what happened. So I start my journey once again with high hopes. I love Maine Coons.
Hi @lisac3577. As Maine coon are big cats, owners need to be careful when playing with them. I suggest not to play with a cat for a long time as Maine coon cats jump high and play until they are exhausted. So no more than 15 min of active play. That is one of the cause of heart disease, when owners overplay with cats. Where are you located? If you want we can talk about Maine coon cats.
We got a male Maine Coon from the shelter. He is black and is the most well behaved cat we have ever had. He is such a gentleman and smart as a whip. He talks to us and will come and get one of us when he wants something like food or a door opened. For a Christmas present he brought a mouse he had caught in the basement. This cat is a serious hunter and regularly gets mice in the house. We used to have a mouse problem... He is absolutely adorable and is a love bug. He is a 16lb cat and can be an armfull but his fur is so soft. He will come and get one of us if he wants to be groomed. Sadly he was returned to the shelter twice but he is not going anywhere now. We just love him so much.
I have a female regular house cat. I am wanting a male but am a little concerned about the sexual aggression. Have you seen or heard about this? I'm also nervous about him spraying 😬
@@kamibleeker145 I had a male cat and a female cat at the same time, and this is how it went: the first male cat I had was definitely the dominant cat of the house, he would occasionally hit my female cat to keep her in line. Other than that, he was not aggressive towards her. That male cat died and I adopted another male cat. He reacted differently to my female cat. He was not as dominant but was more territorial. He sprayed. ALOT. I did not know how to stop him from spraying so I just cleaned it up every time he did it. Even tho he sprayed everything he was never aggressive towards her. I think it just depends on the cat's personality. I hope this helped
I have a female Maine Coon / Bengal X and she's just so wonderful. I love her personality and her super soft fuzzy belly that she lets me stick my face in and we cuddle and purr together lol
My MC female weighs 20lbs and almost 4ft in length. She’s a big girl that loves to love my 10 month old special needs kitten. I lucked out with my girl.
My male is 17 months old and weighs 22 pounds. He is 42 inches from nose to the tip of his tail. He's going to be big. He's a loner though. He only wants petting when he wants it. I'm low key scared of him sometimes LOL
I have a 6 month old female Maine coon. Have had her since she was 3 months old. She is super affectionate, but also likes her own space, which is great. She has just been spayed. I’m totally in love with her. She is very much as female Maine Coons have been described; loving, very affectionate, but also needing their own space from time to time. My other, 7 year old Ragdoll x Bengal (not my choice - the Bengal part) male is ultra needy, quite moody, & a bit of a bully. We had some trouble introducing my little Penny. Taffy didn’t fight with her, but he wouldn’t be near her, & went into a depression, not eating or drinking. He had to be rehydrated twice, & eventually was prescribed an antidepressant which has helped. I also use Feliway Friends, which may have helped too. Now they sometimes play, & the atmosphere is much more relaxed. One of the reasons I got a Maine Coon is for the size. Penny is already almost the same size as Taffy. She is also not submissive etc., but is very friendly & outgoing towards Taffy. I’ve waited for 9 years to get my Maine Coon, & I’m so happy to have her at last.
we breed maine coons and they are all sweet. i think the females are more active but as kittens, they are equally playful. they are great on leashes for walks and in general, very confident. When they hit about 1, the males turn into perfect sofa cats. 😊
I hv a 4 year old female Maine coon and she is my world. We live in a apartment so I taught her to fetch and ping pong. She loves my grand kids and plays with them bc they respect her when she is finished with play. Her name is Queenie. But the sad thing about her is that she has some kind of cancer and is bleeding in her urine. What do you charge for a kitten bc when Queenie gets to bad I'm going to hv to put her down. It breaks my heart but right now she is eating and drinking and playing so she's not un to much pain yet.
@@cathieduval298 I am very confused in what you are saying. The kitten has urine in their blood. Did you bring them in anywhere? You just said when she gets “bad” you’re going to put her down but she’s still as kitten. Why not bring her to the vet and say I can’t afford or have the knowledge and skills to help her so let them help her and find a home. I don’t understand how you would decide when she’s had enough suffering and would need to be put down . You even said she’s still a kitten so you plan on doing this soon? I hope I’m not coming off rude I am truly trying to understand
My first Main Coons were a brother and sister. Both playful, both loving. Samson was bigger than Lady. My husband had conversations with Samson. Lady was a bit of a whingey, whiney cat. Lady had a habit of picking at things, tassels on the bottom of the settee, bottoms of curtains, etc.
Luckily both my cats that don't have that issue but I do lots of sxrtach posts around the house, one huge one in my living room, one in the passage, one under my sons bed which is the cardboard ones that are ugly but no one can see that one 😂 and another scratch post near my bathroom door. My girl cat did try to when she was small but that's when I had only 2 scratch post and I kept taking her there and as soon as I got my male cat I got more. They are only a year apart in age but my male I'd already her size.
@@AB-pp3fe I had plenty of scratch posts, but she wanted to pick. Samson would use the scratch post, but Lady, no. I remember when going to pick hem up I mentioned to Ann Mary (the breeder) that Samson’s paws were huge. She just said “oh, he’ll grow into them”!😂
I got a female Maine Coon 12 week old kitten from someone who I thought was a ‘reputable breeder’. Sadly this proved not to be the case. She said that the parents had been checked for HCM. Fortunately my kitten is free from this genetic defect. However, I had never heard of other genetic problems in MC cats. Penny was walking ‘funny’, a sort of swaying movement. After much research, I sent off a DNA sample which revealed that Penny did not have MSA (Muscular Spinal Atrophy), but she is carrying one gene. This means that she should not breed. She is spayed, so that was ok. However, the swaying walk turned into a limp which increased as the days/weeks passed. I took her for hip x -rays. These showed that Penny had a genetic defect called ‘Legges-Calve-Perthes Syndrome’, which meant that the head of the femur had necrotized, & there was only a small piece of bone connecting bone to hip. The cost of repair (a Femoral Hip Ostectomy)) is phenominal - $5-7,000 CA). We were so torn about what to do. Penny is a bright, loving little kitten. We felt that she deserved to have a chance at such a young age, so, in spite of the struggle to meet such an expense, we decided to go ahead with the surgery. It is now 2 weeks since Penny’s surgery, & she seems to be doing well. There is no guarantee that the other leg will not be affected. We can only hope & pray that it will remain healthy. She is now just 10 months old. BUYERS. OF. MAINE. COONS. BEWARE!! Know your breeder, & learn about the genetic defects that this breed can inherit.
Thanks for sharing this information Cecile. I didn’t know these beautiful cats can develop genetic health issues. Bless you for supporting your kitty’s life.
I adopted a 11lbs 12yr Female, she's so shy, yet she loves massages and always purrs, she's not interested in playing and dislikes being picked up, but I love her lol
My female Maine Coon is not interested in lap sitting or cuddles, she however is so sweet and chirps all the time. My male Maine Coon loves cuddling me but rough plays with my blue moggy and it intimidates him so much. Overall they are very chatty, ginormous (think of that when you think about buying food-it’s expensive) , friendly and kind of dog like. Females are more likely to climb super high and males are more likely to be territorial.
I have both but my female is half mainecoon but she is louder than my male and seeks for lots of attention, my male is only cuddly when he wants to nap and he is full mainecoon. Both lovely but I see a huge size difference already as his paws are huge compared to the female
I have gray Maine coon/tabby mix I got from one of my buddy's cats. She is the oldest out of her and her sister. I named her Milkshakes and is an absolutely ADORABLE lil spaz that loves to play with feather and bell toys
I own a 7 month male Maine Coon and of course it might depend on the environment he grew up in his first 3 months, but I think he is the most loving cat I've ever known. He never attacks or bites and wants pets and playtime all the time. It might depend on their personality, but mine also loves to be active with us and run around. He is very agile and strong. I wanted a female back then but I'm glad I got a male because my other cat is rather violent on the play fights, so the maine coon counters that energy. I always heard from other cat owners that females are more distant and independent and males are more needy and affectionate. However this Maine coon is rather a dog because he can't be far from us or doing something alone, loves belly rubs and cuddling at night. He is indeed a gentle giant. Oh and he's already bigger than the other male adult I have.
I have 1 year and half female queen, she super chill. I took her with me on a road trip from San Diego to Oregon and she just chiiled in the passenger seat, back seat, passenger floor board, on the center co sole or my lap. I would stop at rest stops put her on a leash and take for a walk. The perfect travel buddy and she is my first cat; the strange thing is my friends who own cats and are "experienced" cat owners told me "you will have to sedate her and keep her in travel cage"; i did none of that, she was better than traveling with a dog or kids for that matter.
My first rescue 90% Maine Coon had HCM. He also developed a problem with the left femur, & the bone.’died’ according to a surgeon at the specialist emergency hospital. He had the leg amputated (on the advice of several vets with whom I was in contact). Unfortunately, being a large size was not in his favour, & he developed severe arthritis. His HCM also increased, & he had to be ‘put to sleep’ when he was only 8 years old. My new MC kitten was, I was told, free from HCM, & indeed this appears to be so. However, when she was about 6 months old, she started limping. After a couple of weeks I asked the vet to do X-rays which showed that she had a necrotized head of the femur in her right leg, known as Legge-Clive-Parthes Disease. She was & is so young, sweet tempered& full of life that I was able to pay for her surgery (FHO) with much help from a foundation & a good friend. She seems to be doing very well, 7 weeks post surgery, but it’s early days … . Undoubtedly, Maine Coons have the sweetest & most lovable natures out of the many cats I have either had myself, or met outside of my home. I hope my Penny continues to thrive as I am totally in love with her! Thanks for your video!
So sorry for your loss :(. I really hope the new one doesn't develov any new problems and that he will be the sweetest looooong time from now on. Thanks for sharing your story!
I have enjoyed reading the comments about males and females. I have had my 6 month male Maine Coon for 2 months and love him so much that we have decided to buy his baby 1/2 sister. She won’t be ready to come to us for a couple more months and is so young her personality is still in question. All we’ve heard is she is brave and she is starting to crawl into the breeder’s lap for cuddles of her own accord. Her mother is affectionate, we are told, but that doesn’t mean anything, I’m affectionate and only 1/3 of my children are as adults…lol.
I have a male and a female Maine Coon. The male is standoffish, quiet and very reserved. He is my registered emotional support animal. We go for walks on a lead and love going to book stores especially for the reception he receives. He tolerates the attention heaved upon him. He is a sweet Giant. My female is a love bucket and attention seeker. She doesn't like being held or anything but seeks attention on her own terms. I would not trade either one of them and both of them are adopted.
I've got a female Maine coon and she is also not very cuddly BUT when she is looking for cuddling she comes to me. She also loves to play fetch and ping pong with me and the grand kids.
My Devon is a male and weighs 22 pounds. And 11 years old. The first two years I worked from home and I would take him with me in the car and now he loves it and I trained him to use the toilet and that process took 60 days. And he walks on a leash. And he’s very friendly around people. And truly adorable and too smart. He opens doors and sleeps on the bed at night stretched out on the foot of the bed. And is up with me every morning at 5:30 am. Some nights when I sleep on my stomach he lays on my back and licks my ears. He loves his homemade sardine chips I make as a treat. And he’s on a high protein diet. That consist of meat fish and carrots blueberries and blackberries and raspberries.
I purchased a male Maine Coon from Russia. He cost me a whopping 4 thousand. He's a black smoke. He's 11 months old and weighs 19 lbs and growing. This is what most people want when they say they want a male, HOWEVER.....he is NOT a lap cat. As a matter of fact, he's a loner. He doesn't like to be touched a lot. You can forget holding him. He'll let you pick him up but once you get seated with him...he's gone. He does like to rub around your legs but when you go to pet him, he dodges, has to smell your hands first and then he'll rub his face into your palms...that's about it. If you try to pet him and he doesn't want you to, he's going to swat or bite. I purchased a maine coon cat tree that was 300 bucks, a 40 dollar water fountain, all kinds of toys and boxes and even a robotic mouse. He could care less about any of that. He sleeps on the full size bed in "his" room and rarely plays with anything. I'm low key a little scared of him and somewhat disappointed.
Sorry to hear that my dear,,, I think you can find a female one, around 1 y old female main coon, let them make love, and soon u got a babies, around 56 days, who knows maybe 7 or 11 babies, let momy feeding them at least for 3 months, there you go ,, u have many adorable kitten main coon💚, u gonna have strong connection and good understanding each other with all new main coon because you started making relationship with them from the moment they were born ✨🥰💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚🥰
Maybe he was sold before it was 3 months old? My male Maine Coon immediately used his cat tree and plays with everything we buy him. We got it at three months.
@@amandaallen5276 I just bought two from Europe from the USA , spent 6k plus tax , that is the price in summer 2022, breeder's do not make that much , here in states you need middle man , a store , they get a fee as broker , Travel from Europe to America round-trip with nanny is about a 1k , the store maybe 500 , that leaves about 1,500 left for breeder , less for cheaper common colors .
I have a female, she's great with my daughter but I've seen her bully a German Shepard and she despises women. But she's also the smartest cat I've ever seen
We had Syberian, Ragdol and Norwegian Forest cats, all died prematurely (heart, tumor and pulmonary deasise)... now 3 Maine Coon boys, 1, 3 and 10 years old... it seems to us, they don't have any health problems comparing to other breeds... well, maybe except 10yrs old boy and some dental issues, but I heard from vet its rather common thing among Maine Coon gentleman in this age... generally its rather strong and healthy cat breed...
My female Maine coon is one of my least affectionate cats, might be her initial upbringing, but she avoids contact at all costs. In contrast, I have male and female ragdolls, they are super loving and cuddly.
My nephew has a Maine coon called Grace…she is the last of three cats to arrive at his home, and five years old, now retired breeder. She’s fit in so well. Sooki, the elderly cat isn’t a fan but neither hurt each other, and Maggie who’s just turned a year old looks at grace as her mother, and both was each other. Grace is also very gentle and likes attention, however doesn’t sit on laps like the other two ladies…they are all characters
I am just waiting to invite a maine coon female kitten into my household in the end of Jan. I have selected a girl, as I do assume the size will be the same as her future fellows (2 large male cats but of a smaller breeds - british shorthair and typical european home cat - both are having almost 6kg without being fat). I think there will be a need of physical balance between them, that the old fellows are not bullied by a newcomer when she grows up. Why do I think so? The oldest female cat (siberian cat) passed away a year ago and she was governing those two by hard paw, letting them behave - she actually helped me to raise those two as a properly behaved creatures, so we will see if the new female would be also kind of more governing type. The previous generation of cats were only females and I saw them also that they are much more "sharp" in the behaviour than current male cats I have.
I have 3 maine coones and I was so worried about my female MC size 😭thanks so much for this video! I was so confused at first on why my male maine coone was so aggressive when in heat.
I watched a vid last nite of a guy taking his "Finn" out for a walk, see where he goes. This cat had the same fur patterns, fur like a wild cat or a Lynx on the ears, much like my Maine Coon/ Siberian mix. But they were calling it a Norwegian Forest Cat ...
I got two kittens (1 male, 1 female) back in October, and my male is more affectionate than my female. They are two weeks apart in age with my female being two weeks older than my male. Right now she is bigger than my male, but maybe he will get a growth spurt and pass her.
I have a sweeeet little girl! 💕🌈🦋 She just turned one. Still a baby! Her name is Yasha. She’s all white with big yellow eyes and a BIG personality. She’s currently walking on my face as I type. Haha! Typical.
Females are WAY faster than males when makes are alit larger and pick on little sister. They run at her to plow her over and lastinute she charges towards them and leaps over them like a crazy circus act.lol
We have two 12 month old MC sisters and one is 14 lbs while the other is 16lbs. So they definitely will be huge by the end of growth cycle of 3 years. 🙀 They definitely eat way more than our previous Siberian. Like obsessed with their food. Interesting info on female and males. Thanks for the content. We prefer females but honestly it didn't matter. We just wanted litermates and it came down to what they looked like. 💜😽
Was for how long they can live. I've had 3 females. One only lived to 6 before her heart gave out. The next one lived to 18. Cancer took her. The 3rd is still with us. She's 22.
About the food amount: Sure, the monthly food cost may be negligible. However, over the entire life of the cat it would add up. I am sort of biased though. I don’t have a “Maine Coon” and never have had one. My families first cat was a female and she was MEAN! She wanted nothing to do with anyone. That is why for the longest time I HATED CATS. However we got a male cat and his is SO MUCH COOLER. He is chill and enjoys being around us. He legit acts more like a dog than a cat though. Our female cat passed in 2020 and we ended up with another male cat and he is cool too. Now we have 3 male cats and I LOVE THEM! They are all so cool.
I accidentally ended up with 2 mainecoons and a half one bc my mom found them as tiny kinda malnourished kittens only a month old, and bought them home, there were no shelters or anywhere they could go so we kept them I didn't know much about cats bc they were my first ones but I took them to the vet and got them healthy again with medications they needed Then they seemed slowly bigger than they should be and looking more maine coon like and so I have 2 (.5) 😂 The "half" is bigger than normal too but not as much and looks like one but short-haired instead 🙋♀️ very much same litter tho 💯
I have wanted a Main for a long time but the more I hear about the multiple physical aliments I'm really reluctant to get one. Our last two cats have had health issues and it can be hard to deal with. I just don't know which way to go.
I didn’t choose a Maine coon. It chose me. There’s was this orange Maine coon cat, that looked like a skeleton with fur. But his fur was beautifully taken care of which shocked me. Because I found it eating outta the food I leave for feral cats. Everyone in the neighborhood was trying to get this cat. It took me 3 weeks to gain its trust and bring it inside. It never ran away from me. It just walked away and meowed at me over his shoulder. After 3 weeks he came running to me and I got him inside. I took him to our local animal rescue league in hopes of finding the owners. He’s 3 years old. Weighs slightly over 10 lbs and is a kitty skeleton with fur. You can see his hip bones even through the fur. You can feel every notch on his spine, every rib. He looks unnaturally skinny from above. No chip, not neutered, no matching lost cat flyers, no one claimed him. He either escaped or was dumped. Either way, I got VIP on adoption. He’s home with me and my husband and our two other girl kitties. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if he escaped from a very horrible backyard breeder. He looks starved before he was lost. I’m only saying that because of the difference in his coat from the first time I saw him to three weeks after when I caught him. I was feeding him those entire three weeks. It looks like he gained weight since I first saw him and he still looks and feels deathly skinny. I’ve been brushing him the past two days since he’s home. But I’m scared I’m gonna break him he’s so skinny. He is eating, drinking, and using the bathroom.
Our Maine Coon girl is 20 months old. She dotes more on my wife but less on me. That's fine because our 2 Burmese (boy and girl) dote on me. The Maine Coon will come and cuddle either one of us when she wants cuddles and often tries to stroke the other cats. It's funny because our elderly rescue cat 17 and the girl Burmese put her in her place despite her being nearly twice as big.
I’m afraid I’d have to disagree with you. I(like many people)prefer the largest car they can find, & makes-in my experience ARE more affectionate & calmer(in general)than females. I will say tho, the one really sweet, good natured female cat I had was a Maine Coon.
Our male is much more affectionate then our female. She is amazing and we adore her but our boy is a goofy lover and she is a beautiful judger 😂😂 I love them both so much. She is constantly around but don’t pet her unless it’s the two minutes a day that she will allow it.
I went to adopt a kitten at the shelter and found an 8 year old Mainecoon when I walked he looked at me like he was saying don’t leave and I fell in love with him was shocked that breed was there since it’s not common he was the only Mainecoon there he’s very affectionate and lovable when I go to sleep and when he naps throughout the day he sleep right by me and follows me everywhere he really is like a dog when I asked a friend how they are since she has one he’s not as big as one but still is big compared to my very small cat he’s not always playful but sometimes is and him and my other cat they play with each other at least I know he can’t hurt him since he has no teeth have no idea why but looked online so I think it’s cuz he was allergic to his own bacteria and had them all removed since is still young
If you get a male, be ready to deal with massive litter box duty. I have a spay who is only part Maine Coon, and she is big enough to have to transport in a dog crate. Neuters can get a lot bigger, and need all of their supplies, including litter boxes, on a larger scale than most other breeds. Of course, if you adopt an adult instead of a kitten, you will be spared the possible shock of having him grow past thirty pounds. 😸
I have a 26lb 6 year old Maine Coon - Jack. he doesn't play with humans unless its a item/feather on a string. he doesn't go for laser pointers or a little rough housing, you will get the claw if you touch them back feet. However, he is very loving, he doesn't even suspect rough housing or harm is coming when you put your hand towards him, he just melts into your hand and rolls all over exposing belly and is a huge love bug. I don't have a female maine coon to compare him with but i have a regular female cat, and the only time its loving is when its hungry. Jack follows me all over the house, waits for me at door when i come home from work, and stays about a foot away literally until i go to work the next day. Best cat I ever had and will get another.
In my world cats are orange, and orange females are hard to find. So I like males best, I have only owned orange male cats and that may be why. As a child we adopted a mixed cat that was half maine coon, and he was the (cat) love of my life!
i preffer males, because of size but i always had females becaus it just happened like it. just listen to your heart and go with the cat you feel the best. not the one with best looks, "right" gender etc.
My mom was friends with someone with 3 Maine Coon kittens and they said I could take 2 of them to my house for a sleepover but I had a cat which was a tortoiseshell cat and at first she didn't do good with that e two Maine Coon kittens. 2 kittens were boys and one was a girl and I took one boy and the girl. They both had another sleepover and we wanted to keep two of them but the tortoiseshell was too affected so we had to choose which one to keep. My parents wanted the boy and I wanted the girl. We chose the boy to keep and we were gonna take the girl back next day. The next day the girl wanted to cuddle with me and sleep a lot and she was really cute. So I changed my mind and took the boy back. Then my mom was like, it's good we took the boy back because he wanted to play with the tortoiseshell cat who kept growling and hossing but the girl just sat there and was very patient. Now me and my girl Maine Coon kitten are very happy
Make sure the breeder is good. Check for obvious things, such as whether the kitten or cat has fleas. No reputable breeder would permit their cats to have fleas. Also, look at the older cats. If they aren't friendly, your little kitten may not grow up to be friendly either.
I have been searching far & wide but can't find a channel where I can ask questions about my Maine Coon's strange behaviour. Can someone please direct me?
