You know, I am honestly surprised. I have been born and raised in Maine my entire life and I was worried about the girl's reaction to Moxie. It's a distinct taste that grows on you, I used to despise Moxie; it was all my grandfather ever drank.. but I like it now that I'm older. And your daughter is RIGHT, Moxie originally WAS made for medicinal purpose lol She's a smart one already; and very cute lol Also "coffee cakes" usually don't taste like coffee; it's just the texture that makes it a coffee cake. The crumbly, dry fall apart texture, they are to be eaten with coffee usually. Here, if there's coffee in it, it'll say coffee flavored or coffee infused. I am pleasantly surprised with this reaction ^ ^ Although I would've sent salt and vinegar Cape Cod chips personally lol (I can't even eat half a whoopie pie though; and its our state dessert - its just so sweet, it takes me a while to eat one)
I love seeing people try the food and drinks I have on the regular here in Maine! Moxie was first used for medicinal purposes, so Chloe had the right idea!
+TylerLasagna ; Indeed she did, smart little girl. I'm from Maine too and their reactions to Moxie was actually pleasing. I was worried they wouldn't like it like I did as a child; but now I drink it from time to time; it's definitely an aquired taste.
Chloe is learning..always blame dad for the trumps..or the dog ;) Loved the family's addition to this taste test Barry. Chloe's little additions made me laugh - she takes after you! 'My tummy is on fire!!!' I think it was your fault she got those trumps.. Haha! Happy Easter to you all, I'm sure you're all nibbling away on chocolate as we speak x
being British and living in the US I miss coffee flavored coffee cake and was disappointed to discover that Americans don't actually put coffee in there coffee cake, I guess I'll just have to make my own and market it here "English style coffee flavour coffee cake" yum
As someone from Maine, Yes sweetie, Moxie tastes like medicine!! Haha. That was adorable! I agree with her. The aftertaste is very medicinal! :) Adorable video!
Loved this as I am born and raised in New England. The coffee cake is not really made with coffee. It is something that we would eat WITH coffee. The traditional coffee cake is a spongy vanilla cake topped with a crumbly cinnamon topping (sometimes with nuts). Chloe saying "wicked pissah" made me laugh. It's a swear here!!! Hearing it from a little nugget like her made me laugh out loud!!! So cute!
Children’s taste buds feel/experience flavors more intently, usually refuse strong flavors. so Phoebe willingness to try things means she has a great sense of adventure. Good going!
I was born and raised in Portland Maine and then I moved to England for 10 plus years. I then moved on to Morocco and somehow ended up back in Portland Maine now. Glad you enjoyed the treats. I just may have to send some others.
A life-long resident of Minnesota, I remember Boston Baked Beans candy being a staple of the candy counter at the corner store as a kid. You can still find them at different shops here and there, but it takes some looking. They're a product of Ferrara Pan Candy, which is based in Chicago, so they're a very midwest thing here in the States.
This video was precious! I smiled through the whole thing. I hope you plan on having these co-hosts in more videos! Oh, and Happy Easter to everyone who celebrates it!
Live in Maine and was awesome seeing this in the recommended videos when watching your other videos. Interesting to see how you guys enjoyed our treats that we have here. Cape Cod chips really are the best.
Moxie originally was a medicine so it's fitting that she thought it was. I live in Maine about 5 minutes from where it was originally invented and every year we have a big festival dedicated to Moxie. It's definitely a drink you either love or hate.
Someone probably already mentioned this but American coffee cakes don't have coffee in them. They call them that because you eat them with coffee. That crumbly soft texture is supposed to go perfectly with coffee.
You have a gorgeous family! I enjoyed your adorable co-hosts immensely, I hope to see more of them! Couldn't help but smile through the entire video. :)
Yay New England! I represent the neighbor to Maine, New Hampshire! I love your kids saying wicked pissah as wicked pizza lol..it's kind of a crude saying so i thought it was funny you were saying it with your kids haha!
Aww, how adorable! Can you and your lovely daughters and the beautiful Mrs. Barry visit Texas next time you come to America? I would love to show you around and cook some old-fashioned foods. And I love your shows, your daughters can call me their honorary Granny😍
wicked pissa! i didnt know it was a beer, a common saying by locals. Im surprised they sent cape cod chips for a "maine" box. there are chips (crisps) that are very similar called Maine Coast.
American coffee cake is typically what you call a yellow sponge with a crumble topping rather then a frosting or icing. And the coffee portion would be the beverage served with the cake.
Ever heard the saying 'out of the mouths of babes' ;) That's the true beauty of children. They don't mince words. Adults could learn a thing or two from them :)
Most prepackaged coffee cakes here in the US don't actually have coffee in them but instead are meant to be enjoyed with a nice cup of Joe. Similar to tea cakes I'd imagine. Probably why she didn't taste the coffee. Great video!
Moxie is an old-fashioned soda that has been around, iIRC, since at least the 50's. Also, you finally got to try whoopie pies! I love making them. They are the best! BTW, in the states a 'coffee cake' is just a kind of cake you eat while you have a cup of coffee (no coffee involved in the cake itself). I like a good apricot almond coffee cake made with sour cream in the batter.
I was born in Maine but my dad was stationed to Germany when I was 6 months old and I have never seen where I was born😑 Fort Fairfield in 1965. I am thankful for the internet because vloggers visit it and I can see through the lens😁
My Virgin Kitchen Keep up the great work. Man I wish you could go to an event like CraveCon It would be so cool to meet you. I just found your channel recently and have been catching up on your videos.
My Virgin Kitchen You should look it up it is a foodie con happening in the states in Galveston Texas. It looks like it will be a blast. There are too many videos to watch all of them I am having to slowly go through the different ones.
omg! this is the funniest video ever! i keep repeating on those funny moments. i adore chloe and all her funny statements! 'my tongue is on fire'haha! 😄she's so cute.Nice little family you have here.❤
Hey Barry, some US soft drinks like root beer originated from the medicinal root teas the pilgrims and later settlers were introduced to and developed a taste for, by the tribal peoples, Indians. Root beer is flavored by sassafras root, Moxie by gentian root. There is also birch beer flavored by birch bark. I believe British people developed a taste for the ginger root your ancestors were introduced to by imports form Asia and developed ginger beer (which I love, better than ginger ale)
It's fun to see how fast your girls are growing up. I've got three nephews about of 10, 8 and 6 myself and I can't keep up with them. It's like I'll visit them at christmas and the youngest is learning to read, then I'll come back for new-year and he's reciting Shakespeare. Wow.. I just realized how old I'm getting. Anyway great vid and happy easter to you and your family :)
I'm from new england so this is great. Those are one of my favorite chips/crisps. My grandfather used to drink moxie, I was never a fan. Wicked Pissa = Very good.
I am a Mainer now living in Texas. Moxie is famous in New England. Moxie is bitter-sweet. You either love it or hate it. No middle ground. I always buy cases of it when I visit Maine. The jalapeno potato chips are relatively new. An interesting note: I work in a Texas prison and the prisoners will break up the jalapeno chips and mix them with hot water and make a soup. Surprisingly good. Sadly they couldn't send you Maine lobsters or clams called quahogs. Another treat for us are Italian sandwiches. They are very simple. A long submarine roll with luncheon meat like ham or salami, cheese, sliced tomatoes, Bell pepper, onions and pickles with a dash of flavored oil with salt and pepper. I will put the same ingredients together but it doesn't taste like Maine. A gentleman from Maine opened a Maine-style Italian sandwich in Houston where he also sells Lobster Rolls which is lobster meat mixed with mayonnaise served on a submarine roll. The man started with one shop in Houston and the sandwiches took off and he now has 3 shops. Plus, he sells Moxie!
what is so funny is that I like british treats because they are not so sweet as ours!! Your kids are ADORABLE!!!! very well spoken...and lastly, sadly our "coffee cake" doesn't usually have coffee in it, it just goes down nice with a cuppa coffee. I like the tasting with the kids =) very fun!
Boston Baked Beans are made by the Ferrara (formerly Ferrara Pan) Candy company, whose headquarters are based just outside of Chicago. A lot of their candy is now made elsewhere. Boston Baked Beans were considered disgusting by me and my friends. We much preferred their Jawbreakers. 👍🏻
