Been wanting a rake of 3 Mainline BR Maroon Coaches for ages and just got these off ebay for a good price. Did my usual tweak to the couplings of the middle coach and will probably replace the wheels at some point but these aren't actually running too bad.

Thanks for showing them running and appreciate the little loco and carriages running the other direction.

Always been a big fan of Mainline stuff; very nice for their age, the Mk1 buffet can still hold its own and their wagons are phenomenal.

Me too, although I don't like their Mk 1's. The SK/BSK both have obvious holes in the side where the body is mounted, and I don't think the windows look right -- they are more rounded than those made by, well, all the other manufacturers! And yet, the buffet looks great (just bought a blue/grey one on eBay).

@@PeterJewell2 I agree with you on that. The normal Mk1s just look... weird. Everything else pretty good though

They look great, have large number of mainline wagons, very detailed and spring couplings. Mallard and coaches look the business, fantastic look. So need a running session now but what will you run? Choices now so many choices..👍 all best marc

Always used Mainline coaches on my layout. They were the best in their day and still look pretty good. Sometimes a little bit of oil makes a difference to the noise

Nice Bill, nice, Mainline build a lovely coach the detail is amazing. I like the old Replica railway's wagons as well, I think that both makes can hold their own with a lot of today's rolling stock. Keep collecting love the videos. Eddy xx

Mainline rolling stock is great. I would probably replace the wheels with metal ones so you get the clickety clack. Mainline locos are the plague, avoid, unless you want grief from the split axles.

Yes I will replace the wheels with metal ones at some point. Only too familiar with Mainline locos!

Great buy. Yes the Mainline coaches are absolutely lovely. They were far better than the Hornby coaches of the same date. Mainline coaches always coupled up closer than the Hornby ones.

Hi, my blue/grey mainline mk1, we're poor runners due to the wheels rubbing on the coach body, simple solution was to pack out the bogie to body with a fine washer. Total close coupling I once achieved with the use of a spring instead of the normal hook coupling.

I have three chocolate and cream ones that my Dad got me over 35 years ago now. Came out again just after Christmas when I was given leave to create a small proof of concept layout to test out all sorts of ideas. Still run well. Enjoy!

Nice video! I will do this to my Mainline coaches, still have the prices on the boxes NZ $23.50, found a1986 Railway Modeller mag and these coaches were selling for from £6.00 to £7.00 in the UK, the exchange rate then was one New Zealand dollar = £0.674 converts in to £15.84 for each coach! Freight and import duty + high margins I assume!

I've always liked the Mainline coaches, and as others are saying, they still look good today even against more modern coaches.

I’ve only just found your videos (this one is now a year old) and started subscribing. I’ve got interested in your work as I finally got out my Hornby Dunlop 2 rail I had as a kid. I will definitely try some metal wheels as my nylon wheels must be tired and the few Fleischmanns I had with metal wheels always ran better. I’ve also bought some BR maroon coaches on leBay just as you have, but Dublo. It’s interesting to compare the two and I was particularly interested in your rightful concern about the coaches not being close enough, and adjusting the couplings. Now I’m wondering about the practicality ( and the morality!) of converting all my Dublo couplings to the hook type. I’ll ponder the morality but the Dublo couplings are riveted and I think the coach bogies are too. Have you any advice about compatibility of coupling heights and protrusion before I sacrifice a few trucks and experiment? Thanks a lot

Always wondered why no one marketed realistic corridor coach connectors. It could be easily done with small magnets holding the connectors together.

I've been slowly acquiring rolling stock for a model railway. I have a number of those Hatchette Mk1s. I find the detail on them to be more than adequate. I can't afford to buy brand new these days. I'd happily settle for analogue control, and 1980s level of detail on rolling stock. Don't need the perfection they're selling these days.

Mainline coaches are great . These are SKs though. Ie Second Corridors not Composite Corridors . Mainline I don’t think did first class , you probably need Bachmann for that .

I tried them. Fine on the track but over points they tend to pull the coaches and derail them. Over points connecting one track to another especially they simply don't allow enough movement and always derail.
