These locomotives have a lot of 'presence'! I like the streamliner especially. There was a painting of one of them in a picture book/ reading book of locomotives in my Primary School back in 1960 when I was five years old. It was steaming towards the viewpoint through a thin forest of eucalyptus trees, looking nothing like the small British locos I was seeing. I was hooked. I stared at the thing for ages.
They were just along for the ride as they hauled the train back to Melbourne from Maroona. There's no turntables out that way. What's better is two 38's and two R classes parallel running, probably won't get that again, and it's only SG north of Seymour these days :(
I'm from Newcastle and just wondering why the Victorian's can get more out of a 38 than the drivers in nsw? They sound better and they knew how to get the best out of em.👍 And great camera work also.👍
Found something kinda cool here. This video was shot at the same time another video was shot, and they link up at a particular point. I'll put where they link up below. Likewise, I'll do the same for the other video, This video: Mainline Steam Train - Double Headed 38s to Ararat - Easter 2000 [1:29] ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1FebAwcRA-g.html Other video: 3801 3830 Steam Train Melbourne Ararat Portland April 2000 [1:56] ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-v6FqgGfondc.html
No idea. 3801 was in the lead for the rest of the Millennium Aurora tour. It may have been simply to do something different on the day trip for the Victorians
@@vrfan ah ok. also was this the last ever interstate excursion with nsw and vic? if so then we must all reqeust nsw to return its interstate excursions. but not just to melbourne but to brisbane, adelaide and perth.
Its up in New South Wales. Theres a video floating around on the net somewhere of it in steam. I understand its the commissioning process to get it running on the NSW network thats the main activity left now.
yeah, i agree. tarting up a loco in a covering that serves little real purpose isn't my thing. having said that and bearing that, in my mind, locos have feelings, 3801 might feel underdressed if it were removed.
Great video, and locomotives, one thing i dont like is the whistle, they are instent on and off, unlike american steam, in the days of old, you could know who was driving the engin, by the way he blew his whistle, It was kinda like playing an instuerment.
