Today Mainline Steam's Christchurch depot manager Lindsay Challis gives us a tour around the trust's south island base for running their excursions. The depot is located in the industrial area of Middleton in west Christchurch. We take a look at the operational steam locomotives and the sole survivor of the Kb class, number 968. Plus a quick look at the overhaul of ex-KiwiRail AO class carriages and also the diesel shunter fleet. For more information visit www.mainlinesteam.co.nz or check out Mainline Steam CHCH Depot on Facebook, enjoy!

Good introduction to Mainline Steam CHCH. Visited the Paikakariki depot during my holiday in 2010, it's a very welcoming organisation, as was the case at most other railway preservation sites we visited in NZ. Have to agree with the music making it a bit difficult to understand what is said (especialy for those not being native english speaking), the music has not to disapear completely, but muting it down a bit helps, or otherwise using a clip on microphone will enhance audio greatly when doing interviews, background noise and echo are almost completely eliminated with these. These with a cord can be picked up really cheap, wireless ones are more expensive, but give freedom of movement, important when you have to frame the person with locomotive in the background.

Great stuff mate! Very cool to see what the SI MLS workshop is getting up to. Perhaps someone up here at Plimmerton ought to do that!!! AJ.

968 would look great on the point of a double header with 942.

Yes agreed, KB968 is the only KB left now, it has a super heater the KA,s did not have.
@jacko485

@@barryphillips7327 Actually the Ka's do have superheaters. Most NZ tender locomotives do too I believe.

@@jacko485 Incorrect, the KB was the only one too have them they were built for for midland coal trains, others did NOT have superheaters

@@barryphillips7327 Are you talking about the boosters? The Kb's were the only engines with them. Because I work on steam engines and I can tell you that Ka's, Ja's, Ab's have superheaters along with many others.

Why do the Australian locomotives look so British While the new Zealand locomotives look so American? It's cool though.

From watching other videos of Ka942 thats the orginal look that its got now in the front sort of triangle face, it had or normal steam engine g face just like the K900 sitting at Motat in Auckland. K900 should be restored rather than sit and do nothing people want to see them move not sit this is including DA 1400

Maybe my memory is playing tricks, but I don't recall the streamlining being on the KAs in normal operation; i wonder when it came off?

@@racketman2u I know it's been a year, but the streamlining came off after the ACFI feedwater system was replaced on a few of them

What's with that stupid music, just obliterates anything being said.

Dislike oil fired locos. KA942 looks better without the streamlining. Music is annoying!
