You can tell Ethan is 100% used to having people tell him that his music is too extreme for their sensitive little ears. Haha. Love it. Edit: I gotta back Ethan on every single point. I've chosen my side. 😂
Ethan was making solid points. There’s a huge amount of bands that are staying consistently heavy like Lamb of God, Hatebreed, Incendiary, etc. and that’s not even touching black and doom metal. Cannibal Corpse is probably bigger than Behemoth honestly, and they’ve been pretty consistent
I can totally relate to Ethan’s perspective. I was never really a fan of the classic metal bands like Priest or Iron Maiden not even slayer really, I was always attracted to the bands that pushed the negative vibe to the limits. Anything upbeat ruins it
Ethan is so based. This is like a repeat of every conversation I have with other metal fans. If it sounds good, I don't like it. If it sounds like there's something wrong, it's probably pretty decent.
I'm pretty sure there are acoustic guitars and soft, sing-songy vocal ballads on Slipknot's 3rd album. Their first two albums where consecutively heavy as fuck, but in my opinion they dropped the ball on that 3rd album and were never able to recover their original aggression level.
I have to agree with Ethan, it's not the fact that they become big, it's the method of how a band goes from underground to majorly popular is what causes the hate, some bands bounce back from it and bring back the sound we like (Metallica, priest, sabbath) while other bands not so much.
I would even argue that when a band like Metallica "goes back to their roots", it's nowhere near as punishing as their earlier stuff. Like let's be real. Their latest stuff doesn't hold a candle to Master of Puppets. It just doesn't. So I almost resent the notion that they're "just as heavy". They're older, they still want to stay mainstream and make money. So that edge and that brutality is basically gone. It's too refined, too filtered, too mixed. No one is picking up their latest stuff and burning a hole through the proverbial CD like they are for Ride the Lightning. It's just not happening. The classics are classic for a reason!
Every time he opened his mouth I couldn't help but roll my eyes, absolute shit takes. 🥴 He really should have stayed in his lane instead of bringing up such weak bands
Their first record they took a bit of grind and metalcore into respective electronic and melodic places with the frenzied DnB beats and Corey’s clean singing.
I feel like im right in the middle between Doc and Ethan's stance since I like the nastier stuff and the DIY work ethic of the of what people would consider "genuine" metal but also like alot of "polished" more well known bands that test the waters of melody and cleans. At the end of the day just enjoy what you enjoy
Agreed. Seeing the new kids who aren't even necessarily metalheads starting mosh pits at Coachella or whatever the fuck give me hope. Seeing Knocked Loose and bands like them headlining at your Coachellas, Lollapaloozas, etc is fucking nuts to me but I bear witness to this new wave.
On the Lamb of God comment about staying hard throughout, Randy is putting out clean vocals now on the last two albums. Isn't that "mainstream singing"?
Ive had this conversation with and people who dont get it argue like the dude from God Forbid. I think its time to start calling it for what it is. "Selling out"
I get where Ethan is coming from and I don't think we NEED BMTH and Slipknot to get people into that stuff, but in the age of the Internet it is absolutely is the way a lot of people my generation got into the extreme. That's just the way of it.
Division is great. It allows things to grow outside of one another. Then you have a lot of different awesome things to dive into and take years of your life from you hahahaha :)
What's up with Doc? Next time get someone who knows what the conversation is about. Love the other hosts and Ethan is great but after 12 minutes of Doc's nonsense I stopped watching.
@Vengeance * it’s by far the easiest least talented form of rock by far. Extremely repetitive riffs, boring bass/rhythm. Unnecessary drums , none existing vocals or melody. Should I go on ?
