Nice one Rich, haven';t seen your channel in a bit even though I subscribed. One more thing to pay attention on the locks I guess. I got plenty of free lubes I get from the hazardous collection site when I drop my motor oil off. Just bought a newer 2017 Roadtrek 190 Popular with a bit over 6,000 miles from a dealer in Texas and drove back home to Minnesota, its beautiful. So far so good but I'm holding off driving around until all the snow and road salt is gone. My older 2005 Roadtrek 170 sold right away. Take care
I have another brand of dry lubricant but this one is quick, easy and inexpensive to get. amzn.to/4adHH2a. The active ingredient is graphite so it doesn't really matter what brand it is. I didn't sho it in the video, but there is a little flap covering the opening where the key goes in to keep dirt out. Just be sure to used a pin or something to slide it open, like the key does, so the lubricant gets inside the mechanism. If you are just lubricating, not removing, open the door so the lubricant will be helped into the lock by gravity. with the lock out, it was easier for me to get the lubricant on the tumblers, after I cleaned the corrosion off.
@@RoadtrekRich sweet, thank you so much. I’m going to do this as mine is getting sticky and I don’t want to get locked out of it. Next, is dealing with my step on the drivers side. It’s mostly gone and I don’t have the broken parts. Any thoughts?
Hi Rich, nice video, I just noticed the non standard hinges on your side storage compartment, has the stock plastic hinge failed in you? I'm still working on my roadtrek here in the UK and the plastic hinge is something I'm a bit worried about, currently I have the entire fibreglass storage box removed from the rig so it might be a good idea to change this hinge or fit an alternative solution before I refit it all up,
My Roadtrek came with those non standard hinges already installed. It was probably something the original owner had to deal with at some point. The hinges on mine look kind of clumsy compared to the oem piano style hinge. As you can see, either style does the job so I guess it boils down to aesthetics.
@@RoadtrekRichthanks for the reply, I'll probably see what options are available when I get to the point of refitting it all back on the rig, I thought about stainless piano hinge but not sure if I'd get water seeping through into the storage area. The stock plastic hinge is great at keeping the water out. I've just last night pulled the engine and trans out, first time pulling it all out of a van and it's real tight, I wouldn't be too exited about doing it again anytime soon.
I use that dry, powdered graphite for locks on mine so it doesn't collect crude like the oil-based lubes do. Interesting hinges! Were those on it when you bought it or did you have to add them at some point?
Hi Sandy. Someone in comments asked what I used and yes, I used dry lube for the same reasons you mention. I use the same thing for the bike chains on my e-bikes...for the same reason, so the dirt and grit isn't attracted to the chain and wear it out or make it noisy. Yes. As far as I can tell, the locks are original. Old stuff lasts...new stuff? Not so much, sometimes. It also doesn't seem to matter if it's more expensive or inexpensive. Sometimes spending more money just means I have LESS money. The corporation has to attract investors, by the stock price going up and up. They make it back by their customers needing to buy more products more often because the products don't last as long. A simple, inexpensive clothes washer used to last 20 years. Now it lasts 5. To repair it costs almost as much to buy a new one. So...corporations...ravenous appetites for revenue. I should probably get back into the t-shirt design business. I did marketing, sales and promotion lots of times during my working life. I think I still have a few ideas for some graphic designs about what we've gotten ourselves into.
@@RoadtrekRich yes, 1,000% Planned Obsolescence is the new commerce god! I cling to EVERYthing old that I have, based on the quality. You said 'locks' but I was asking about your 'hinges' on the storage door ... I have a fiasco of a story about mine, lol!
@@SandySez yeah the piano original hinge I get it sleak. But the gut that had the van first put real hinges on this one. I noticed in this video, it's time to polish them again. good hinges.
