Maintenance: Nikonos V Gaskets

How's it going everybody? Today I have something a little bit different for you! We are going to be replacing some gaskets on the Nikonos V camera! It is a lengthy video but I made it this way so you can follow along from start to finish. Keep in mind that these are the user accessible gaskets, there are other gaskets which are deeper in the camera that may need to be replaced professionally.

Hi I was just wondering what you put on the q tip when you were cleaning where the rings were. Would it be ok to use 70% rubbing alcohol and let it evaporate once you’re done? Or would that cause the o rings to degrade faster?

Hi thanks for watching. I am actually using the alcohol to clean the channels of the old grease and left over dirt. I would probably not recommend cleaning the rubber with alcohol and reinstalling them as the alcohol would be damaging to the rubber. I believe they still sell kits that have new rubber gaskets and tubes of grease.

Hello, Isopropyl Alcohol, either 70%or 90% is the standard for cleaning the o-rings. Clean off the old silicone grease, any dirt or debris.

should the o rings be removed/cleaned and replaced regularly or is this an exercise for only replacing? curious how ofter o rings that aren't damaged need to be removed and cleaned. thx!

If you take your Nikonos into the water you might want to consider checking the rubber rings often and reapplying grease, if the rubber is worn out/stretched out you should probably change it. Remember after taking it into the water dunk it in some fresh water and dry it off before storing it.

How often do you clean and grease the O-Rings? Everytime you load new film?

You should maintenance those about every time you take a dip with the camera

Yes, you should check the seals for any debris or leaks every time you take it into the water. If you take it into the sea make sure you rinse it off with freshwater afterwards.

The function of the grease is to create a tighter seal than the rubber can achieve alone.

Where did you get your o-ring grease? I just picked up a Nikonos V and I’m skeptical to purchase a set like the one you use on this video from eBay. Do you think any o-ring grease would work?

I think that any quality Q ring grease should be just fine.

Just picked a nikonos v up from an old photographer he bought it in 2001 and used it 5 times he said. After now 20 years. He had 2 replacement kits un used with the camera and grease but how good are the other seals that ony a professional can change after 20 years?? I’m a bit sad that there is nobody that can replace those or do i nit have to worry. Just replace the once you shown and i will be fine. I’m just so scared that i will trow €150 away if i take it for a swim even after replacing all the seals i can change... thnx for te reply!

They sell the o-rings and the Nikon grease, all brand new here in Japan!!!!

A bit late but they do sell a set of O rings and grease but keep in mind those are only the accessible ones. There are O rings inside the camera that only a technician can get to. There are still people around who service these, just Google it.

+Frankie Liu no I'm sorry I don't. I'm not aware of anyone that repairs them either, maybe Nikonos Project?

From Nikon's website: "One 3V CR1/3N lithium battery, or two 1.55V SR44 silver-oxide batteries, or two 1.5V LR44 alkaline batteries"

Hi if the inner o-rings are no serviced and I only change the ones I can, will that post a threat to camera flooding?

It could, these cameras are very old at this point. Best bet would be to find if someone can service all the gaskets.

+Rediscover Film It's a great camera! Kind of on the bulky side and it's seriously built like a little submarine. Mostly metal with bits of rubber on the outside. The lenses are pretty good but you'll have to scale focus. The lens has a focus scale on it that's quite handy. The shutter is super quiet like a muffled "thuck" sound. If you are patient they sometimes go for pretty cheap. I definitely think you should get one especially if you take your kids swimming often or vacation in areas that rains etc.

+Rediscover Film If you don't care for manual controls I would like to suggest the weatherproof Canon Sure Shot. Cheap and all automatic.
