In this video I show how a major blockage in a cast iron plumbing pipe caused the pipe to crack. Unfortunately this pipe damage caused a leak that went undetected which resulted in a ruined bathroom below.

I had to remove the bathroom fan in the ceiling of the bathroom below to make a large enough hole to assess the cast iron pipe leak. To access the damage pipe, the ceiling of a tiled shower below had to be removed by demolition. With the ceiling removed there was enough room for two plumbers to work.
The plumbers inspected the cracked cast iron pipe and determined the failed section needed to be removed and replace with 4" inch PVC pipe. To make the repair they first removed the damaged section of pipe using a reciprocating saw. Then they cut a piece of 4 inch PVC pipe to the proper length and connected it to the old cast irons pipes using rubber Fernco flexible couplings.
The plumbing repair worked for the time being however cast iron pipes have a useful life expectancy. At some point all the cast plumbing in this residence will likely have to be removed and replaced.
The damaged section of pipe was nearly 100% blocked with a nasty clog. This was a section of venting pipe so we are not sure what happened to clog it. Perhaps things fell down the vent and got stuck by the first 90 degree bend (where the blockage was located)
