Fourteen F-16CG Fighting Falcon's arrive at RAF Lakenheath from the USAF Aviano Air base, Italy. The "Fightin' Buzzards" arrived today around midday on the 3rd March 2022 using runway 06 of RAF Lakenheath. The tail code of these F-16's will bear (Ted calm down) the "AV" tail code, which is the code for Aviano Air Base, situated in the North of Italy. The callsigns used for these F-16's were "Buzzard" which indicates that the nickname for the 510th Fighter Squadron.
These guys provide combat AirPower on demand to both U.S. and NATO combatant commanders as well as the National Command Authority in order to meet National Security objectives.
For more info: www.aviano.af....
The 510th Fighter Squadron were originally formed as the 625th Bombardment Squadron (Dive), 405th Bombardment Group, at Drew Field, in 1943, flying the Douglas A-24 Banshee. On 15th August 1943, the 625th was renamed the 510th Fighter-Bomber Squadron.
In late 1943, the squadron moved to Walterboro Army Air Field, South Carolina, and began flying the Bell P-39 AIRACOBRA, and then the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt. In March of 1944, the 510th moved to Christchurch, England, and began combat operations.
During WWII, the 510th moved to mainland Europe with the advance of Allied troops, flying from Picauville and St Dizier, France; Ophoven, Belgium; and Kitzingen, Germany. The unit was credited with 39 kills.
In late 1945, the 510th was inactivated at Camp Kilmer, New Jersey. In 1952, the 510th was reactivated at Godman AFB, Ky., flying the Republic F-84 Thunderstreak. In April of 1953, the squadron relocated to Langley AFB, Va., and transitioned to the North American F-100 Super Sabre. In 1959, the 510th moved to Clark AB, Philippines. In 1964, the squadron moved to England AFB, La.
At the start of the Vietnam War, the 510th established a new home at Bien Hoa AB, Vietnam. Bien Hoa became the birth place of the "BienHoa Buzzards". The 510th flew over 27,200 combat missions in Southeast Asia. In 1969, the unit again inactivated.
In 1979, the 510th reactivated at RAF Bentwaters, England, and began receiving the Fairchild A-10 Thunderbolt II. In 1991, the 510th deployed to Incirlik AB, Turkey, in support of Operation Desert Storm and Operation Provide Comfort.
In 1993, the 510th relocated to Spangdahlem AB, Germany. During 1993-1994, the 510th flew more than 1,700 combat sorties from Aviano AB, Italy, in support of Operation Deny Flight. In the skies over Bosnia-Herzegovina, the squadron became the infamous "Bosnia Buzzards".
The 510th was inactivated in April 1994 and reactivated at Aviano AB, Italy, on July 1, 1994 as the 510th FS "Bosnia Buzzards" flying the General Dynamics/Lockheed F-16CG Viper. The Bosnia Buzzards, during Operation Deliberate Force, were the first F-16 Block 40 squadron to drop a Laser Guided Bomb.
The 510th led the Tactical Air Forces with the first combat use of Night Vision Goggles in an F-16 during Operation Deliberate Guard. The Bosnia Buzzards led the way by being one of the first F-16 units to become Forward Air Controllers (FAC-A), and were the first to employ as FAC-A's in combat in the F-16.
In Operation Allied Force, the Air War over Serbia, the Buzzards distinguished themselves by flying more combat missions than any other F-16 squadron. Subsequently the "Balkan Buzzards" have expanded into an Expeditionary Air Force, the worldwide "Fightin' Buzzards" and were the first Aviano fighter squadron to deploy to Operation Southern Watch in June 2000 and to Operation Northern Watch in June and December of 2001.
During those deployments the "Fightin' Buzzards" engaged in combat operations over Iraq in both surface attack and combat search and rescue. In September to December 2002, the Buzzards returned to Operation Southern Watch and dropped 136,508 pounds of ordinance over Iraq to include the first GBU-31A JDAM in F-16 CG combat history. The world's finest fighter squadron, the "Fightin' Buzzards" continue to fly the world's finest fighter the F-16CG Fighting Falcon at Aviano AB, Italy.

The F-16s of the Belgian, Dutch and Danish air forces were assembled by Sabca in Charleroi as part of the European Joint Program, the engines being assembled and tested at Techspace in Liege. They also built 40 aircraft for the USAF.

Actually, the 31st was never going to upgrade to Block-50s, because, the air force only bought just enough Block-50/52s to equip the 20th, 35th, and 52nd Fighter Wings, for active duty service, and the South Carolina Air National Guard's 169th Fighter Wing. However, the Vipers at Aviano were upgraded to receive Block-50 capabilities, as part of the Common Configuration Implementation Program. This big upgrade gave the Block-40/42 series airframes the ability to use the ASQ-213 Harm Targeting System pod, along with the AGM-88 HARM, and the Blick-50/52s were given the ability to use either a Sniper, or Litening-II Targeting pod, along with employing JDAMS, LJDAMS, AGM-65 Mavericks, Small Diameter Bombs, and the new Stormbreaker bombs.

These F-16s are from the late 80s hence their serial numbers (88). Ultimately an F-16C/D, these particular F-16s are an F-16CG, which had lots of improvements and modifications to become an all weather strike aircraft. There were also other mods from radar, gps and strengthened undercarriage etc. But yeah, it’s still going and can keep up. Thanks for your comments, appreciate it 🤙🏼🧸

@TedConingsby 2 года назад
That is a shame and yeah they are amazing jets 🤙🏼🧸
@johnosbourn4312
@johnosbourn4312 2 года назад
The reason for that is because the Vipers of the Royal Norwegian Air Force are older Block-15 series airframes, and they've reached the end of their airframe lives, so the RNOAF have to convert to the F-35A, and with the Russian Air Force fielding more advanced fighters, and strike aircraft, those very old Vipers are no longer the most advanced fighters in service, today. This is also because of advances in fighter aircraft designs, and technology, along with advances in weapons, and avionics technology, coupled with advances in sensor, and self protection systems.

@TedConingsby
@TedConingsby 2 года назад
Thanks George 🤙🏼 So not CG but CM?
@afcgeo882
@afcgeo882 2 года назад
@@TedConingsby Right… the CGs were all updated to CM a few years ago in order to carry a more modern array of weapons, like the HARM missiles. It basically brought Block 40, 42, 50 and 52 aircraft to one standard and ran from 2000 to 2010 (concurrent with mid-life updates). It also included newer mission computers, cockpit displays and data links. They’re actually about to undergo another refit program PoBIT that will include 22 modifications. Mostly avionics, radar, data links, a next-gen electronic warfare suite, a comms suite upgrade, a larger center display unit and main computer, and a few other things. This will be for the 608 Block 40 to Block 52 aircraft. Older aircraft will be retiring. Basically, the F-16 was designed as an air superiority fighter back in the 1970s, but ultimately used mostly as a strike fighter, with much lower airframe stresses than designed for. That’s resulted in airframes that are in fantastic shape for their age. The life extension programs have been able to keep them in very high readiness percentages and USAF plans to keep them for another 30 years. What they need is regular electronic/coms/avionics upgrades to keep them relevant.

Ok, so I’m a plane noob, but why would they move to the Uk when Italy is closer to Ukraine 🇺🇦? Presuming this is in preparation of something “major”?

It's NATO "reinforcements" I don't know allot about it but I'm thinking maybe refuel and send them to closer to Ukraine borders?but see reason I thought he said he is at Italy base which is pretty close to the Ukraine borders.like I said I'm not certain I know little bit bout fighter planes.

Hi, it is a OOA (Out Of Area deployment), which the AV F16’s get deployed here (or to neighbouring Mildenhall) annually. It will be for a NATO training exercise and not related to current events. 🤙🏼🧸

@@TedConingsby You got to be where Big Jets tv goes. Pilots Wave while taxi'ing to take off, plus you can see alot more of what is going on, rather than being a field or two away from the airstrip. I very much doubt a pilot will even see you, while concentrating to land, while checking their displays. no matter where you stand, particularly in a random field beside them.

While the USAF named the F-16 Fighting Falcon, that isn't what it has become, it is called the Viper by the pilots. That is because it looks like a snake ready to strike. It also got the name Viper because when the first ones came out they also called it Viper for the Colonial Viper in Battlestar Galactica. After what I read yesterday, I would rather have Vipers covering my 6 them F-35s. From what I read while the F-35 may be deployed it's not really ready but is buggy as hell.

Historically I guess all aircraft have had nicknames and with variants, I would guess this would also create a preferred name. Thank you for the info 🤙🏼🧸

Not any more, because, the early problems have now been ironed out with the current examples.

Don’t know what you’ve read, but even on a bad day, an F-35 is FAR more lethal than an F-16 on a bad one. I don’t want to take the Viper’s due from it… historically it was probably the best fighter ever made, but the F-35 is just far more capable in every way, as a multi-role fighter.

NATO is doing a large scale exercise off the coat of Norway. The Cold Response exercise will have 26 countries and 35,000 military personnel. This exercise has been planned for a long time, so it has nothing to due with current events.

Thanks Will. However, there have been exercises planned for a long time, to which have been going on annually, that have been cancelled. So, some exercises have gone ahead and some haven’t.
