Major Taylor, black cyclist icon and black cycling influencer is the hero to many cyclists of color. In this video, I reflect on how Major Taylor influenced my journey in particular as a black cyclist. I reflect on the challenge Major Taylor faced as a black cyclist himself, as well as wonder would be if Major Taylor were around today and able to ride with L39GION or possibly against other cycling greats. I also reflect on how the black cyclist, well actually ethnically diverse cyclists, are under represented in the pro peloton.
It's about the ride.

Brother, I appreciate you. Unfortunately, Major and Eddy aren't around to add current stories to social media. So, the content you add, along with history you share, continues to be an encouragement for non professional cyclists like me. ✌🏾

I’ve been biking since a toddler. It crazy to me that I only learned of Major Taylor when I was 45,7 years ago….when I was upgrading from my mtb to a hybrid. Trek ….was highlighting MT achievements/history. I was in AWE. Cause I’m into TDF ,Giros etc felt like an outlier [none of my friend cycle] not many Black ones,🤔none of my non black friends cycle either🤦🏾‍♂️. Back to my point. MT s story inspires me to ride like I’m in the TDF every time out😃🙌🏾‼️

@BiggWill Beats, I can appreciate that perspective being one of one or one of few out on the bike. Major Taylor was (is in memorandum) a BeAST. I can imagine the shock and awe as he jumped out and crushed his competitors. It sucks that we (humans) are bias focused and caught in our prejudices. Hopefully 🙏🏾 one day we will grow out of this as a collective. Be well and stay safe. 🤓

Interesting insights here on a lot of levels. In a previous comment I mentioned my experience of learning of Major Taylor.. Before I knew of Major Taylor, one of my influences was Olympian Nelson Vails "The Cheetah". I remember watching him on TV at the 1984 Olympics and being in awe. Here's someone who looks like me performing at (what was then) the pinnacle of amateur sport. I do wish the Olympics were still amateur only but that's another subject. Anyway that had a big influence on me and my motivation to cycle. If I had known about Major Taylor before then, Im sure he would have influenced my formative years in cyxling. The "Fantasy Cycling League" musings are also food for thought. BTW, in an interview Justin Williams recalled a time when he was on a pro team and there was an opportunity for that team to hire his brother, Cory. The team wouldn't do it. How short sighted. No doubt the Williams brothers could have done for pro cycling what the Williams sisters did for pro tennis.

Rando, your comments never disappoint. A top tiered team promoting the Williams Brothers would introduced cycling to a developing minority market. Much like yourself, I arrived to the cycling scene late, largely because I didn't see anyone that looked like me. It is an interesting question on what could have been if the Williams brothers were embraced. However, given time, grace, and continued exposure, this story is far from complete. @@ErniesCyclingObsession Thanks, and I appreciate your videos and insights. I really wish someone on that pro cycling team had the vision to put Cory and Justin on the same roster. Merchandising revenue alone would have covered the cost of their salaries. But no, the team just couldn't break out of the traditional pro cycling mindset. Here's the interview with TrainerRoad.
