Each theory seems to work for certain aspects of international relations, putting emphasis on some and ignoring others. Isn't there a more holistic approach which acknowledges the value of both national egoism, military power, ideas and social constructions, states and international institutions, anarchic systems and economic interdependence ? What do you think about the Enligh School of IR (liberal realism) ?
@Rhonda I would like to ask... as you said, that in realism states behave rationally and in liberalism states have to work through compromises.. now relating to cold war, MAD doctrine, given the conditions was purely rational and was a compromise based on rationality. Is it that Liberalism and Realism theories overlap here?
I'm a highschool student attending a specialized fine art academy, and I listen to this on my free time. you don't have to be a politics nerd to find this interesting!
My opinion there are NO theories(hard and fast rules) in IR just concepts and hypothesis really. The real practitioners of IR, most of them do not have formal training in IR and these people are in the positions of power, they just use their experience and some rational think if it permits, the rest of the decisions are made by the Secretary of states or the President in most situations have no background in IR. Those with training in IR are either academics of working for think tanks.
