Russia is advancing too slow (6 km^2 average per day in 2024) for it to capture a meaningful amount of territory before their Soviet stockpiles and economy collapse. At 6 km^2 per day, it will take 220 years to take all of Ukraine, or 35 years to take just the Eastern Oblasts. That's how big the country of Ukraine is. Even if they match their best week of the war (the initial push into Kharkiv, where they captured 220 km^2 in a week), it would take 7 years for the Eastern Oblasts alone.

Compared to what we in "the west" are used to, Putin's proposal was hardly an "ultimatum".

Putin's ultimatum wasn't or isn't much different than what he brought to the negotiating table prior to the war either. In Feb 2022, the demands were simple, for Ukraine to remain neutral, for Zelensky to investigate and disband the Natzii groups with or without help of Russian authorities and for the entirety of Eastern Ukraine, or rather the ethnic Russian population to be protected at all costs, and in failing to do so, would strike a military response immediately. The only real difference between the two now is that the ethnic populations are now under Russian control directly.

Putin's ultimatum will not stand. The nations at the peace summit demand a just and lasting peace according to the UN charter. that means, russia has to leave Ukraine before they can start negotiations. If you listen to their speeches, are pledging increased military aide to Ukraine. They are determined that russia will not win and will not keep a single centimeter of Ukraine. In other words, no peace for russia, only judgement.

Everyone keeps using the word "ultimatum," but if you actually listen to what he said, it was surprisingly gentle. He said if Ukraine withdraws troops from the 4 oblasts and withdraws its bid to join NATO, the war will basically end. Beyond that, he only said that if Ukraine refuses the offer, the situation on the ground will continue to worsen for Ukraine, and the terms of the next offer will be even less favorable to Ukraine. It was nothing like, "Admit defeat now or we will unleash everything we've got!"

If he reported for 2 years casualties between 600 and 1000, and now he reports casualties between 1500 and 2000, means that something changed, and you can see that on the map. It does not matter that you trust him or not, the point is in the numbers, casualties are growing, and so the amount of territory conquered per day. Ukraine defence is crumbling.

Around 13K in the last week, the previous one was around 11k. Next week it will be 15k. Even taking into the consideration that the Russian MOD exagerates this numbers, is clear that ukraine is in the Wolkstrum phase of the war.

@@Rick-zw9kp im just wondering when will they start. i dont think anyone is surprised with a russian summer offensive, it makes no difference at all. likewise, the ukrainian counter offensive was going to be a fail, because their entire plan was based on russian soldiers fleeing the battlefield when leopards 2 and bradleys show up.

@@timothy1949 well I would say that we should modify our expectations of what a summer offensive will look like. It won't be a huge push in a specific area. It will be a gradual push dispersed throughout the entire line. So in that way it may have already started. Or it won't really materialize at all because they intend to continue the slow grind and only commit to an offensive when Ukraine is sufficiently weakened.

@@Rick-zw9kp a gradual push means no summer offensive. its okay to continue the current approach, the russian military knows more than we do. but from what we see, it seems that on a lot of fronts there are limited positional fighting and major units are not committed. since the russians have so many units in the smo zone, that is why most analysts expect the russians to start a major offensive.

The Dnipro River starts in Russia it ends at the Black Sea Kherson to Zaporizhzhia is also partly controlled by Russia

When publicly declared tasks will be finished: 1. Demilitarization (1 million already gone, right now they have over 800k and recruit by ~50 thousand per month; theoretically they can recruit up to 6-7 million). 2. Denazification (tribunal already awaits people who opened monuments to SS and demolished monuments to Soviets; unclear what with EU. In several countries is all the same, they declared SS as own heroes). 3. NATO will stop violation of agreements and return to own borders (I remind, when Russia returned own troops, NATO promised not to enter even in Eastern Germany).
