Even if you don't have a yard, you can take your seeds from what you bought at the grocery, such as avocado, mango, peaches, plums, apples, squash, tomatoes, green pepper - whatever you have, go out into the neighborhood, or areas off the beaten track, such as alleyways or by the railroad tracks, etc. and stick 'em into the ground. Dump some water in there from a container you brought, and leave it. Mark it with a little colored stick so if you come back you'll see if it's growing without having to look for it. Trees take awhile to get going. If they are planted out of the way of foot traffic and city mowing machines, it is likely you will have a food forest spread all over the place. Keep a paper tablet (online stuff tends to get lost) with each seed's location, if you want, and the color marker. When checking your seeds, take extra markers with you in case something happened to your other ones. Stick them deep in the dirt so they don't wash away. It's fun thinking about where some good locations would be that you can walk to or bike to easily to check on them. One of the fastest growing trees is a mulberry tree. But loquat, star fruit, mango and fruit vines are very fast growers. Ask you friends if they would allow you to plant some seeds in their yards. Most won't care, as long as they get to say where they're planted. It's free, so how much fun can one have for free?

I agree about shopping the the perimeter of the store. Society over the years has shifted towards convenient and easy meals, and most people don’t scratch cook anymore, they rely on prepackaged prepared foods too much. When I started really cooking all of my meals I saved a ton of money. I choose smaller portions of higher quality meats and eliminated all the processed meats and cold cuts. I do buy frozen vegetables though. Most frozen vegetables are more nutrient dense than fresh ones because they are grown to maturity and flash frozen immediately after being picked whereas fresh produce in grocery stores are usually picked early and irradiated to extend shelf life.
@BeatTheBush
@BeatTheBush 2 года назад
I forgot to mention... I cook rice 6 meals at a time and meats 2 meals at a time. Ten you cut down on cooking times by reheating. My frozen veggies never tasted good, perhaps its the brand I bought?

Buy a food saver. Extract all of the air and that meat will last for many years in the freezer. Two years or so ago I ate the last of the half cow I bought back in 2008. Fresh as they day I bought it. All depends on how well you pack it and make sure you don't lose the seal.
@BeatTheBush

Good point. I did see vacuum sealed things say they lasts 2 years. But 2008????
@grugnotice7746
@grugnotice7746 2 года назад
@@BeatTheBush Crazy, I know, but it works. What destroys it is the exposure to air causing the moisture to sublimate, damaging the protein. Even food savered food will do this if you lose the seal, so you have to check it maybe once per year and if it lost the seal, go ahead and cook it. I got super lucky on that stuff. Didn't lose any of it. You can also layer it to make sure that even a lost seal won't destroy it. Did this with some liver and stew meat and I expect it to all last even longer than the tenderized round steak which was the last of that 2008 cow.

I don't recall if I've seen this video or not but this is also one of those areas where I think time is more valuable than the $10 savings. So as an example, let's say you go with the CVS plan. And the plan is to sign up, pocket the $10, then cancel. Sounds easy right? Issue is that the time it takes for you to sign up and then time to cancel (with most things). That time to me is not worth a bag of almonds. But this is a theme I see in r/frugal where someone may have saved some money but they're actually wasting time. And imo in the long run, it's someone who understands the value of time who has a stronger bearing on their financial success. It's sort of the same reason I don't care about 'coupon clipping' because yes, you save cents here and there but you're wasting time. And not to sound privileged but eating ground meat and canned food (while it may save money) isn't what I would want to do. I mean, I suppose that people have to make do -- but it's more expensive in the long run -- ie if they check their blood with a doctor, guaranteed there are major deficiencies and problems in many areas etc.
@Dracomies
@Dracomies Год назад
But to keep this light-hearted and in theme with the video, I'm always amazed at how filling a peanut-butter jelly sandwich can be. Sometimes when I'm lazy and am hungry I just make one, and it pulls me over. :P

Meat can last for years with no quality or taste loss if you use a food saver vs regular freezer bags. I use vacuum sealer for so many things. Well worth it and saves money. Sugar, most veg & seed oils, margarine, and processed foods are the main enemy, NOT red meat, butter, and animal fat - bad advice from the 1990s. Rice has a lot of arsenic and simple carbs as does wheat/bread (glysophate) and oats. I try to limit those. High quality meat, eggs, and veggies (wide variety and colors) organic when possible) are best. Frozen veggies are very healthy.. just as much as fresh… not processed - why would you avoid them?

2:40 But you can keep boxes of Almond milk in a cupboard for a few months, while you have to keep making the milk with the nuts, and cannot store it as it will go off faster. And how much does it cost to keep running a blender to make the milk? 1:19 Really expensive compared to prices in Europe: 6 tins = $4.
@BeatTheBush
@BeatTheBush 2 года назад
Assume 1kW usage for 2 minutes and 0.33/kWh = 1.1c to run the blender. I mainly use almond milk from real almonds to avoid preservatives and anything NOT almonds in the boxed milk.

Hey, I agree that it definitely feels good to eat well. The only draw back is time. I find when I've been at work & come home tired & hungry I want to quickest thing possible so I find keeping the odd ready meal to hand helpful. The days I'm at home I definitely find it easier to eat well as have more time to think about what I can eat & prepare it.

The way I get around that is prepare 3-4 meals in advance whenever I do make a meal. Then I just reheat and go.

So you package up that meat in the plastic wrap. All that plastic costs you money (is terrible for the environment) and should be factored into the price of your meals. Don't tell me it isn't because you could not have those several pounds of meat in the freezer if you did not package them as you showed. Everything costs money and ought to be added into the price of the meal.

Unless you eat the $1 bills, you do not "avoid" inflation.
@BeatTheBush
@BeatTheBush Год назад
Lol. You avoid it by switching to cheaper foods that are equally nutritious.
@dissect123
@dissect123 Год назад
@@BeatTheBush That is not "avoiding" because those products are also more expensive due to inflation. Sure you can always live more frugal as you have elaborated (alcohol, processed food, own vegetables/fruits) but that is not linked to inflation. If you actually want to avoid inflation (as in your money does not lose purchasing power) you can only buy assets now that you think will be worth more in the future and liquidate those assets on a regular basis to buy food. So I don't disagree with frugal ideas, just with the description "avoid inflation".

Most of the people poor is due to their laziness to buy premade food or eat out. As long as they cook they can save and be rich since they probably save money and invest.
