Make a Bodice Sloper from a Free Pattern!

A sloper, or a basic pattern block, is a really useful tool for creating your own designs, but making a bodice and sleeve sloper from scratch can be quite complicated. In this video, I’ll introduce you to BlueHours Atelier which has bodice sloper patterns for sizes 30 B to 48 D, and then I’ll show you a bit about how to tweak a pattern to improve the fit.

My mother was the best seamstress ever. I would buy fabric, take it to her, kind of explain what kind of suit I wanted and in two weeks when I went back to see her, I would have an amazing suit. I worked at a prestigious accounting firm and a computer company so the suits had to be nice. And yes I know how blessed I was. She sewed for people until I started school, then she got a job outside the home. I never had a sewing lesson. I just absorbed it all from her. I didn’t learn it all but have managed to do ok for 60 years! I am loving watching your videos and having my first lessons!

I cannot tell you just how much I’ve enjoyed finding your tutorials and what a difference they have made when tackling a sewing project. I started sewing in Jr. high and have loved it but never was able to modify the pattern correctly for my size, shape. I’m back in love with sewing again, after all these years, 50+! My aunt needed a non-typical sized person to make a personal sloper when she took a historic pattern making course in the 90's. She chose me and i had the best fitted shirts that her sister, my mother, sewed for me. It is fascinating to see numbers turn into a sloper and into a well fitted shirt! Love to see the process!

Dear Catherine, I did pattern making about 15 years ago and still have my blocks and sloper in the wardrobe. I hadn't heard it called a sloper (Australia). I had forgotten many of the steps to making them, but this gave me a great refresher. Anyone who hasn't done pattern making would maybe find this a bit overwhelming, so I'm sure they would appreciate a course. Thanks again for all your tips etc.

That was excitingly informational!! I took two years of sewing classes when I was in High School, but building a sloper wasn't taught. As for the book recommendations, the Reader's Digest Complete Guide to Sewing was a gift my parents got me for Christmas during that time and I still have it! Who would've thunk it? 47 years later, I still have and can make reference to the best Christmas gift I could've ever received! I love your channel! I particularly like that you showed us making the adjustments from the muslin back to the paper. The adjustment I am trying to figure out is vertical.from shoulder to armpit I'm short, my bust is low, my waist is short

@@pmclaughlin4111 oh good, I think that the length adjustments on Blue Hour Atelier will help you. You might need to lengthen above the waist and shorten below? It might be good to do those adjustments on paper before you cut your muslin and then tweak more in the fitting.

You are a GREAT teacher. It would be interesting to sew one side of the sloper without the tweaks and the other side with the tweaks. That way, people can actually see the difference all at once.

I’m always amazed when I see you fitting the garments inside out. This way you fit what will be the right part of the garment on the left side of you body. You can only do that when a person is perfectly symmetrical. In my experience as a sewing teacher nobody is….and believe me, I learned the hard way. I love your video’s and have recommended them to my students.

As an european i never converse. I just take the measurements in inch and just make the pattern. Afterwards it doesn’t matter if it was made in inch, centimeter or chickpeas. 😂

Oh Catherine, you are sending me down a whole new rabbit hole. I have just finally gotten comfortable with making alterations on patterns. I have purchased. Making a slow or seems like a huge commitment. I would however love to see you create a course out of this. I have a habit of buying courses watching them and then trying to do everything that the teacher does in the course. You are a fine teacher. The only thing I would suggest is that you go just a bit slower. I know you have heard that from me and your mother before. You have such an amazing handle on the topic that I think you forget some of us are moving a bit slower than you are. This was a great video. Catherine, I found your explanation of the fitting of the sloper and how to transfer the adjustments from your toile to the sloper really useful. I’ve often thought I’s like to try designing my own patterns rather than relying on bought patterns now I have some tools to do that (and a lot of old sheets)😅. Wonderful video! I would love to see a course from you. On the blue hours blog, she mentions using a different size for front and back to account for a full tummy in a pants Sloper. Dear Catherine, this was really great, I really appreciated how you went back and forth adjusting and re-adjusting - the insertion of the darts at the front shoulder, and then moving them to the best position to smooth the armhole on the sloper was really helpful! There are definitely better and worse places to try to insert a dart and make it work well! I would definitely be interested in a course. Inspired by you, I am just working now on making some T-shirt necklines smaller using your great ideas from you video a year ago - inserting the pin-tucks on my t-shirt's gaping v-neck worked great, and I will probably add some little beads - I'm inspired! I wonder if you could at some point look into how a big v-neck could be converted into a sweetheart neckline? I have made an attempt by separating the collar, tucking it, and gathering the rest of the fabric to ease around the tuck - but I am sure you will have some great tips to make that go well!🥰

I’d love a version with bigger bust if you can find one. Being a JJ it’s very difficult to adjust patterns to fit so a sloper would be great. I’ve tried a few different tutorials but they never work out. Maybe woven fabrics just aren’t for me 😂

Hi Catherine, I've been struggling for over week on a dart that starts at the side seam on an upward slant to the bust. Could you do a video on repositioning and/or adapting darts to individual figures? Especially determining individual bust apex and bust span differences from markers on the pattern. The patterns I use are generally my go-to for minimal fitting issues but this dart thing has me stumped. My measurements indicate that the B cup is correct but I keep getting a bump at the bust point and I'm quite frustrated. I've narrowed and/or shortened to change the end point and even considered re-cutting and moving the dart to the shoulder. Thank-you for all your wonderful videos. I view them over and over for the amazing knowledge you share.

I love your videos. You're a great teacher. Question: if the hip area is too tight and the fabric rides up toward your waist for more room, how would this relate to a high shoulder? How would I adjust a Sloper to fix it? RTW shirts always ride up my right shoulder and off my left at the neckline. I want to use this Sloper to make a vest for a festival in two weeks. Should the side seam be higher or lower at the armscye when sewing a sleeveless garment? How about on a vest that will be worn over another shirt with sleeves?

You made your waist dart shorter. Where should a waist dart end at the bottom of the dart? The take-up is primarily at the waist so we just eyeball where we want it to end? Or is it related to hip dimension or back length? I've never moved or altered a waist dart and I'm now thinking I should 😅 or at least play around with it. This is a great video.

Thank you and yes, please make a tutorial, even series on even mini tutorials for various figures.... I've seen ladies commenting on patterns not fitting, you can be petite, you can be very tall, you can have long torso and short limbs (I do) or the other way around, narrow sloping arms, wide straight arms.... hiw to tailor pants pinching and dragging on big bums, flat bums, thick thigs but narrow waist, big bellies with narrow hips etc. For such tutorial you could even invite family or friends with that silhouette type as models bc it would be a paid thing not a favour to us and you...

I have a very very old book on pattern drafting, but when I saw for big bust I'd need to add another sets of darts both from the top and at the sides I just closed the book and resigned myself to looking frumpy... You are such a good teacher I'm sure you wouldn't fry my brain like that ;-)

I'm From UK and we use the metric system, but I have always preferred the imperial system, which is how I learned when I was younger. I think you will find younger Europeans prefer metric, but people my age ( mid 60s) will always prefer feet and inches ( and pounds and ounces instead of kilos) Centimetres CAN be useful if you're inbetween sizes, you get a more accurate measurement..... But 99% of the time I will use imperial..... thank you for your easy to understand tutorial.

Great Video. Thanks for sharing. I’m in the US finding the book Complete Guide to Sewing using the link was very confusing. I sure that I just don’t understand. The hard cover is $20 and the paperback is around $80. So I tried finding it on my own. There are so many versions with the same title i got confused. Then I tried using the extended title. That did not work well because the extended title is not recognized.

I am always confused when taking a bust measurement, do you take a breath or let it out? It makes quite a difference in the measurement.

Do I have to use the darts at the waist? My waist measurement is very similar to my bust measurement. I carry my weight there and don’t wear anything that’s fitted.

I just squeak in on that 48D, but if I had been 50D or something would I have been smart to print the 48D and and follow your pattern grading video before trying a muslin with wide allowances for fit?

@@tephralynn oh, that’s very clever! Yes, I think that would be a good start, and then you’d do your tweaking from there.
