Ever wanted to make a knife perfectly without ever messing up? Sure. But it never seems to happen! In this video blade smith Walter Sorrells makes a camp knife and shows how to overcome some common mistakes and problems that crop up during knife making projects...even to experience knife makers. The video shows the building of a camp knife from W2 steel with an authentic hamon (often known as a temper line) clay hardened in the same style as a Japanese samurai sword. Spectacular desert ironwood handles, Loveless bolts and mosaic pins. Part 1 of a 2-part series.

I'm a hobbyist knife maker. I can't tell you how many sets of scales I've thrown away because the holes weren't perpendicular. I first tried clamping them together but inevitably one would shift ever so slightly. I don't know who to give credit for the idea to, but what I do is put strips of painter's tape on both scales, then a couple of drops of super glue on the tape and clamp them to bond. After the holes are drilled you gently pry them apart and peel off the tape.

I have a quote on my shop wall: "Only those who do nothing make no mistakes." Every time that I screw up I go to this quote and reread it.

I would encourage you to try getting a piece of Osage Orange to make a handle for something. It is gorgeous, especially if you simply burn it after the basic shaping with a torch, then bring it down

Walter, you might find the felt tip bottles of Dykem better suited for your application. Also the red fluid color tends to not burn off next to the heat of the grinder.

Excellent as always Walter. I noticed the engagement on your channel has taken a little dip lately? I'm really enjoying the videos anyway.

I know people have the attention span of a fly but these videos are way too short. I fell in that trap of making shorter videos for the algorithm. But it’s not worth it. Your older longer videos are far more entertaining and educational than these short videos with 4 minutes and 10 seconds of actual knife making.
