Concrete Leaf Casting - Small Gunnera Leaf Cast.
Making a concrete leaf cast from a small gunnera leaf. Using concrete mixed with two parts sand to one part cement, along with nylon fibres or polyfibres, concrete bonder and washing up liquid/dish-soap.
The definition and detail in the gunnera leaf will yield happy and surprising results. The concrete casted leaf in this video will be used to make a latex mold to create further casts of the model, or original.
It is suggested to use rubber gloves or protection for hands while using concrete/cement. In this video, no protection for hands was used at host's own risk.

great video.... a question though, will these casts crack eventually if chicken wire is not placed in the middle for reinforcement?
@dramamask
@dramamask 7 лет назад
Thank you Nubian. The leaf is relatively small and the concrete is reinforced with nylon fibres. You may want to use chicken wire for added reinforcement, which I have for larger items. Incidentally, the concrete leaf I made in this video is to be used as the model for a latex mold, which I will cast multiple concrete leaves from. :)

@dramamask
@dramamask 7 лет назад
You may want to add less water on your next mix to keep the concrete firm. When the concrete is cured you can also file off any unwanted and rough edges. Glad to hear your leaf turned out good! I think it is very satisfying when they turn out nice! :)

Thank you! If you left the leaf on would it eventually dry off a and flake off easier. Seems like that was the most tedious part. Just wondering if there is a better way of getting the original leaf out?
@dramamask
@dramamask Год назад
Well, you will most likely get a bit of staining from the leaf by letting it dry out, plus you want to keep the concrete wet until it has cured. Personally, I'd opt for a little bit of patience and remove the leaf asap. Thank you for your comment. :)

Hi this is Karthick frm India! can we try this one with white cement?or any other alternatives instead of using Sand as basement??
@dramamask
@dramamask 6 лет назад
Hi Karthick. You can use white cement too. I have used soil as an alternative to sand, but it takes forever to dry out. I would suggest cement, sand and aggregate to make a good concrete mix. :) I used nylon fibres for the aggregate in this video. :)
@latishaross7417
@latishaross7417 6 лет назад
Could you have sprayed the leaf with Wd-40 to help with easy release ?!? Not sure how it works on plants🧐
@dramamask
@dramamask 6 лет назад
WD-40 may get into the concrete which may make it difficult for painting, molding, etc, once hardened. It's not too much of a bother having to separate the leaf from the concrete. :)
@dramamask
@dramamask 6 лет назад
Also, I sometimes use a blow torch on the leaf to dry it out and make it easier to separate from the concrete. :)
@michelebarnes4059
@michelebarnes4059 6 лет назад
Have you heard of spraying vegetable oil spray before applying the cement? Came out beautiful 😍
@dramamask
@dramamask 6 лет назад
Yes, but I prefer not to use vegetable oil on this particular project and like to keep the concrete 'clean', as I tend to make a latex mold from the original casted leaf. :)
@Nubian31
@Nubian31 7 лет назад
Hello dear, if chicken wire mesh instead of nylon fiber will that be ok for reinforcement?
@dramamask
@dramamask 7 лет назад
You can use chicken wire/mesh for added reinforcement, but you still want to use some kind of aggregate, whether that be fibres or gravel for that over all strength throughout the concrete mix. :)

@@dramamask do . you sell the molds of this particular leaf that you made?…it’s stunning. Also, I’ve used quick rite polymer mix for a large leaf casting that started to slightly crack while drying. Did I make the mix too dry?…or watery?…and how can I ADD more mix now to the tip of the rhubarb leaf? I ran out of concrete mix before I could cover the entire large leaf… thanks!!! .

I plan to try this but got regular concrete mix instead of quick Crete. Will it still work? thanks
@dramamask
@dramamask 7 лет назад
I haven't used Quick Crete, but have seen others use it with good results. I don't know what the mixture is with Quick Crete, but am guessing if you add some kind of aggregate, either gravel or fibres, you should be ok. Maybe give it a go and see if it is ok. I'm only familiar with mixing up my own concrete from cement, sand, aggregate, etc.

mine came out as disaster. The edges and holes glued the chunks of sand and I could not remove the leaf. It's impossible to clean it off, and left green stains. I used the same plant.

Cover the sand with plastic wrap before placing the leaf on top. This will keep sand off the casting.

@dramamask

I hardly ever use chicken wire and for leaves this size, nylon fibres are ideal. I know other kinds of mesh can be useful too, but the fibres are very easy to work with. Of course, for bigger things use different aggregate, etc. I may put up a vid sometime using chicken wire or mesh. :)

cray. put the plastic over the sand before laying the leaf. Don't put the plastic over the back, needs the air to dry. and if you do it right, use the freaking hose and the leaf comes right off with no damage.
@dramamask
@dramamask 6 лет назад
You need to cover concrete to allow it to cure and not to dry out, as mixing water with cement creates a chemical process. If concrete is not covered after applying, the air will dry it out, leading to possible cracking. Using water over your leaf to release the leaf will hardly do anything. Would like to see how you make your leaves and perhaps post up a video of yours. :)
