Just finished this quilt and gave it to my sister for her 70th birthday. We are both quilters and I loved seeing her face when she opened it up. I used a patriotic jelly roll and really looks fabulous.

Ms. Jenni, your nails always look so…nice. Good to have nice clean nails while on camera. I like this pattern you’ve worked on and make in this video a few years back. Thanks Jenni. You explain this so..easily.

I made this quilt and thought I would add some info that isn’t in the video to help people out: if you keep your fabric folded (width of fabric/WOF) you can get 4 back ground squares out of each cut, so cut 10” wide and the cut off salvages, then cut 10” then cut 10” again and you’ll be left with a tiny piece at the fold (scraps). So if you have 10 blocks by 12 blocks and half of those are back ground squares, and the other half are the jelly roll strip squares, you need 60 back ground squares. 60 divided by 4 is 15 WOF (keep it folded and cut from the salvage end leaving the fold intact until you cut it away as your last cut) cuts at 10” and each sub-cut into two 10” squares with two layers of fabric each will give you 60 background squares. I had a lot of leftover from 3 yards btw. I know seasoned sewers will already know this but I’m just starting out and I thought it might help newer sewers. This quilt is so fun! Thank you :)

I made this pattern only using two strip set squares rather than a strip set and a background. Then when I put the 10" squares together I made sure that the strips were going opposite directions (diagonal and vertical) then sewed and cut the way you teach. My blocks turned out wonderful with at least 3 designs per block. The surprises came when I assembled the blocks, once together they make 2 other blocks as well. Thanks for the wonderfully fun idea. I went totally scrappy with fabric.

Great idea! I even have a spare jelly roll sitting around. I made a king size jelly roll strip quilt a couple years ago. I didn't know about the technique of sewing them together and ended up with a disaster when I went to pin backing and batting together! what a disaster and I didn't know why. I learnt the hard way...thanks for the tip, hope others don't make the same mistake.

Use a generous quarter inch seam allowance on this one. An accurate quarter inch will make your strip set 10.5 inches, not 10. You'll have to cut a whole quarter inch off each of the end strips. It may not really matter in the final quilt, but I know that would bug me, so wanted to save others potential frustration :)
@cariann3
@cariann3 8 лет назад
If it's bigger than 10" we can either cut it down or if we have yardage the background fabric can be cut into bigger squares.

It bows because the feed dogs take up the bottom fabric, just a little bit more, slightly bowing the strip set. If you alternate directions, the bowing is corrected.

*Waving hand* I think I know why .... the strips will bow when they're all sewn in the same direction because of the feed dogs. When you switch direction the stretching alternates from left to right instead of all on one side.

@dpage9520
@dpage9520 8 лет назад
The reason a strip set bows if you sew the strips together all from the same end, is that the feed dogs actually move the fabric on the bottom slightly more than the top fabric. A very long seam sewn without pins shows this effect, in that the two pieces, even tho cut the same length will not match exactly at the end of the seam. That also explains why a walking foot is beneficial when matching plaids.
