Make a Decade Resistance Box for Under $15

Here's a simple decade resistance box that can be made for under $15. The switches are under $10 and the resistors are under $5. About half an hour of soldering is all it takes. I found that with seven decades the parasitic resistance was around 1.4ohms. Keep in mind that this decade resistance box is not intended for high power or high precision applications. You will need better switches for that, and they wont be cheap.

I had purchased the components to make one of these a number of years back but then forgot about it. Now I have found your video again I need to find the components and assemble it! :)

Hello, Complete NOOB here, are there instructions somewhere, so that I would have a clue, as to what I would have to solder, and what kinds/value of resistors, I need to purchase for this project. Cheers!

I had considered a resistance substitution box by Elenco for my purposes which is figuring out ranges to circuit bend on keyboards and electronic toy sound sources so as not to burn out the unit completely - but this looks more like what I wanted originally. That .300 differential though, that is slightly worrying mainly because those old 8 bit toys are fiddly and getting more and more expensive every year. Maybe I will do both- I still need the Elenco capacitance substitution box anyway, and could compare and contrast.

좋은 정보 감사합니다. 저도 Decade Box가 필요했는데 만들어봐야겠어요 ^^

Nice idea to use SMD resistors. Any problems with the wattage at low ohms settings? Those look like 1/10th watt resistors.

Abizar Lakdawalla Hi. I only use the lowest decade to trim for better accuracy. For high currents you would need better switches and bigger resistors.

Wear do u put the 100ohms & to what ohms . I need to go from say 100ohms to 56k. Seen the stretches on eBay. But I am not sure how it all goes together. I no to go from one side to the other but I don't see any ohms in the box please help

Hi, I have a set of these thumb wheel switches. Is there any way to make these into a coded gizmo switch bank, using regular circuits and not computer code? I want to wire up my car with this as my ignition (I don't want to carry a key or key fob). I will be using a set of micro relays and regular relays to carry the current needed so as to not burn up these thumb wheel switches. Any ideas? I think it would be kinda cool for my car to have these as my "crack the code" ignition.

@@Bobo-ox7fj ok thanks. I was going to instead use a hidden reed switch (behind my dash board) and use latching relays to create all the connections, and activate it with a magnetic finger ring, but I wanted to get the car on the road asap. I bought the reed switchs though. I ended up using an IFF Radio Destruct Switch Box, New Old Stock, as equipped on B-17s and B-24s as my starter solenoid activation. So basically no key, just flip an ignition switch and push the double button radio destruct box. Looks kinda cool! If I want more security, I just turn the battery off in the trunk and lock up the car like normal.

Have you got a link to where you brought the switch cant find them anywhere

Hi. I bought them through eBay, just search for "thumbwheel switch." Keep in mind that there are two common types: BCD and non-BCD. For a decade resistance box, I used the non-BCD kind.

non-bcd aka decimal

We can't search for the switches because you've not told us the name

Hi. They're called "decade switches." :)
