I really enjoy the way that younshow all the steps and explain the considerations as the project progresses from stock to usable item. It occurs to me, that you exemplify something that is missing from our current education system; many teachers lean in on telling students what to think, instead of guiding them to learn how to think. Thanks

Vise looks great, definitely want to see the complete work. Rounding off the crank assembly is the right way , the effort to make the forming tool shows in the final product.

You are a true inspiration Mr. Pete. Mine is coming along very nicely, I made the forming tool from an offcut of HSS 6mm x 25mmx 150mm long, it only took 15 minutes to grind to the radius. I followed your thoughts of forming both pieces, and before milling, looking very nice! I used stainless steel for my 1/2" rod and threaded rod, just to be a little different.
@neffk
@neffk 4 года назад
Mr. Pete, I finally finished this project. I used 1/2-10 Acme rod. The angle cut on the jaws was done on an Evolution dry-cut saw with some fixturing. I had to buy a lathe to do the handle (any excuse, right?) and I seriously contemplated buying a mill, too. In the end, I finished the handle joint with a hack saw and files---it took longer than the rest of the build! The table clamp is cast iron that I TIG brazed to some 1/4" hot-rolled steel. I couldn't mill a V-groove into the jaws so I clamped a piece of sacrificial bar and drilled a hole 1/2 in the jaw. I rounded the corner of the table clamp so you can flip the jaws up on end. The handle was difficult but it's really nice how it doesn't catch on the edge of the table, regardless of where it stops. I made the other handle by drilling and threading a 6-32 hole in each end and in 2 pieces with a slightly larger diameter. Then I screwed a 6-32 screw in and jammed the larger pieces on. Then I cut off the protruding end of the screw. Here's a link to the final product: drive.google.com/file/d/1s8RNpYqjSK3MHoaU_YRa63Npfx1m1fDF/view?usp=sharing

You had me laughing again. I always try to figure out ahead of time just how you might do something with all your machines. Well you got me again. I was sitting in front of my monitor trying to figure out just which machine you were going to use to make the end radius on the crank handle. I of course was also trying to imagine just how you might secure the crank also. I was all set to see just how close you came to my "Rube Goldberg" machinations when you simply walk over to the belt sander and sand the radius in! Shot down again. KISS is alive and well in your shop!

For simplicity sake I just pinned a lug nut on mine as a means to tighten and loosen it with a ratchet wrench, but none the less, the lasting beauty of your efforts is that this installment will undoubtedly be revisited over and over as a text book go-to on making that type of crank mechanism.

A great series. Even if I am not making a project that you are I still watch because the techniques apply to many things. I just have a little chinesium mill and lathe so I can't match your speeds and feeds, but the methods still apply. I just have to scale things back to match the equipment I have.

As always great video! On a side note I stumbled onto a trick that seams to help a ton with chattering. I was turning a 7.5" pully out of steel and just happened to notice by chance that my chatter was very minimal by turning up and down my speed every 30 seconds or so (cant recall the exact time) it was a pain but it was very effective. Iam sure people much smarter then me already know about it though. Lol

Those extra touches are worth it if you want to have pride in your work. Looks count, I've seen machining jobs done to the bare minimum for usability. They look very unprofessional. We should not be dissuaded from designing in attractive features that may not be absolutely necessary. (P.S. you could have used a ball turning tool for that radius. Most home shop folk have already made one.)

Lyle, PLEASE STOP using your vernier calipers as a marking tool. You will wear the tips. If you really must do it that way, then buy a cheap $ 10 vernier, NOT your good quality one. Also use some heat insulation on your VICE jaws, you were losing a lot of heat by clamping it directly to the part.
