Nice build-I like the trigger set up. One thing I did was cover the metal plate with thin plywood. I started catching more stuff then. Thanks for taking the time to make a video.
Great trap, and like your truck too! I made a smaller version of the trap with a 1/4" thick steel door which I drilled a lot of holes in to get it to the correct weight for trigger sensitivity. Caught a chipmunk with it and released him elsewhere. Other traps I tried did not work. This one is reliable! You get one chance - & if the trap failes - the critters get wary of it and you must go to plan "B". Best one I've seen.
just finished watching all your stuff, you are doing great. your explanations are concise and clear, and your visuals are well shot. you have improved alot from your earliest vid. keep it up. blessings to you and yours.
I build your design I like it I didn't cut down the middle and left at the same size as the wood and it didn't really bother the way to the mechanism or anything and it works really good I just used washers to hold down the middle missing screws
I like the trigger mechanism with the wire but don't think I would trust the pvc and the metal working together maybe make a slot for a piece of half Inch plywood.
May be a good idea to round off the corners of the sheet metal door so they do not cut into the PVC should the door drop unevenly repeatedly and cut into the PVC causing binding.
Thanks for your video. It's very useful. Just a reminder for your safety: Remember to put your thick gloves and safety glassed on when you operate the saw. I feel it very dangerous.
Great explanation. Outside of your bragging about your new truck, really great video. (can't say I blame ya, I brag about my wheels all the time too) Thx for posting.
I liked the PVC idea also the ring near door on the side of the box , inside & up left this Vid could be done in less than 5 mins max thanks , go ahead
I think he said it was for squirrels and smaller animals. I can't see it surviving a raccoon. The trip wire would probably need to be replaced every time you had one in the trap and I don't think the door would keep the average raccoon in there for long.
I check my box trap twice once in the morning cause after night there cause they move around move, and in the after noon after wakeing up they search for food
Great video. I am planning to make a couple of these for skunk removal jobs. Do you have any idea what the tension on the treadle is? How much weight fires the trap?
I was just wondering what stops a raccoon from scratching the door to get out. It seems that if they go at it they may get the door up to get out. Perhaps a latch or something at the top of the door that falls went tripped. Just an idea. And I do like truck and it's color. I wish my Chevy Suburban 4x4 was that color of red. Forest green makes me look like a Forest Ranger on patrol. Keep the vids coming. Well done.
Looks like a nice sturdy trap. My only concern would be with the door. That metal isn't very thick and a raccoon might be able to bend it or hit it hard enough to break the PVC guides (I have had raccoons tear apart the doors and back walls of expensive live catch traps). I would recommend that you put 2 small strips of wood on either side of the bottom of the door so that the animal can't get under the door and open it (could use the same system for guides), and something a little thicker might be a little more secure.
It was a nice build but i just seen a video of the same build and the racoon blew right out and through the door. The PVC pipe maybe smooth for the door but not strong enough. When I build mine I'm going to support it with a strip of that decking board behind the PVC.
Raccoon will work the door and lift it and get out. Need a latch on top. Half round pvc is too weak. Trap will be really bloody if it actually holds an animal and you get to dispatch it. Poor trap.
I build them from 2x10s rip cut to 3/4" and laminated back together and use wire mesh. Trigger is connected with plain string. Works great. imageshack.com/i/pmpqZY0xj
nice job man i'm looking at building some of these for rabbits and i've got a design layed out for decapitating snakes and trapping the head. (i hate snakes)
I don't understand, why would they want to push on the plate that hard?you haven't shown why the animal would be tempted to push down on the plate my friend. I really wish you would have explained how the trap gets triggered. And not by you, the human pushing a stick on it.
