thank you for your comment, I also still learning myself, have tried a lot of sharpening methods and know now the best doesn't exist. The best way is combination of few of them. Stay in touch.
I great build. But make sure you drip the water onto sandstone and don't run it through a bath as it will wear out much too quickly. Dripping water creates an abrasive paste which sticks to the wheel whereas running through a water bath constantly cleans the sandstone off and as well as being less efficient at sharpening also quickly degrades the stone. Cheers
Thank you! I picked up a welding tip from your video. Tack weld, align, finish the weld! I only do a little welding (torch) so this is new to me. Best Wishes
The hydraulic motor is a nice touch, quiet yet so full of torque and powerful! I would love it if the stone was beveled at 22 degrees for double edge and 15 degrees for single edge blades on the side opposite, plus a jig/guide on top and another on the side to use the flat face of the disk (used like a disk sander) for sharpening to very accurate angles.
Your ideas its awesome. But one thing i know is that Mig welding is Unsuitable for Outdoor Welding, since they use a shielding gas to protect the purity of the weld etc...
Thank you Chris, you are right I expected I'm now the third generation using that stone, have to say the stone have a rest for many years. Hope my son will sharpen his tolls with it when I will have gray hair.
I'm sure he will... I absolutely love to see all the engineering in home made stuff coming out on RU-vid... Great ideas and awesome recycling abound.. Thanks for sharing your craftsmanship...
welding with your set square out in the way of spatter hurt my head to watch it.. please get a tool belt or keep it covered. I know its something so trivial but taking care of your tools is so important
I have an old truck out back I thought about taking the wheel off and putting one of these on there should work about 80 mph should grind the shit outa my pocket knife.i have a bad fuel leak I'll just use gas instead of water . all I need is a volunteer to test it will I watch thru binoculars about a mile away.
bucketrobbert then what are you doing watching videos like this. You've got your cart in front of your horse. These items you mention are very basic shop tools. what were you expecting? ..another one of those diy videos where it's made using a disposable box cutter with the breakaway blades, hot glue gun, fiskar knockoff scissors and needlenose pliers with all the happy-happy ukulele and whistling music blairing and looping throughout the whole video?
I really liked at the end it spinning real slow (about what it would under foot power). My friend lost his brother 50 years ago, when another brother put a gas engine in a foot powered stone, it spun to pieces and killed him. Did a real number on the whole family, and the pain lives on for all still.
I've seen a few of these old foot powered wheels abandoned in old farmsteads. I like seeing this brought 'back to life'. My comment was for others to realize not to over spin them. I see the V shape, which I believe was for sharpening sickle mower blades, horse drawn. Thanks for posting your rebuild.
There is a sliding blade section that is removed from the main mower machine. This is the part that is driven by the crank arm, from a flywheel that is either driven from the horse drawn machine via gearing to one of the running steel wheels, or from the power takeoff shaft of the tractor via some gear reduction. This has the V shaped blades riveted on. This is light enough for one person to handle, but you need a support table on each side, as it is iron, and the operator is trying to hold the blade at the correct angle to the stone.
That is a very nice build.. Not good at carving sandstone HUMM ? give it another try Practice carving ... it is round and flat . not that hard ..thanks
Ha ha ha , Ive had my eye on a manhole cover for a table for the last four years. Just need someone to help me lift it into my car at night when its not too busy. Wouldnt want to get in anyone's way. If you know what I mean.
No, the axle is OK, it seems due to the pulley which is fixed with screw so it's not centred. BUT, the sand stone is not oval shape! So I'll dress it in next episode. Stay in touch.
Greetings from Brazil! I´m new to the channel, loving it! As pure luck I ran by a stone just like that this week, will for sure get back and get it. I was guessing you would make your project pedal operated.
You have probably found out that when you weld one side it tends to pull in that direction. I have been a welder for 40 years and I picked up a few things. My last job I typically had to hold +-o.2mm and sometimes o.1mm or .008 and .004 in imperial. I worked with both measuring prints.
it is more better when the stone is in working is in horizontal place ,keeping the water better, but be careful this is an old stone, keep the speed a little bit middle, and after ,you see ,how it works !! thake care on your eyes, keep glasses on you.thanks.kálmán from Budapest
That was really interesting, thanks for sharing, I am now a follower of any future projects. What is the size and type of welder you have, would like to purchase something similar ( over stick welding ) living in Thailand and most metals quite thin. Cheers
I’m so glad I came across this video. I have two sharpening stones and have been thinking of bringing one back in action. Will you describe the type of motor you used to power your stone?
This is 'how to make a stand' not how to make a grindstone. Apparently it's a lost art because 100% of videos claiming to show it just show bumblefucks making a stand for one they found or bought.
