A hot-wire foam cutter is a tool used to cut polystyrene foam and similar types of materials. The device consists of a thin, taut metal wire, often made of nichrome, or stainless steel. which is heated via electrical resistance. I have used nichrome wire to make this foam cutter. I hope you like this video.

I was hoping the video would be centered around the electronic circuit. Instead, it’s basically a video about building a wooden box.

I agree, though it is pretty entertaining. I was expecting to see a ceramic element somehow there, but here the cutting wire is connected directly to the power source.

So glad I saw this great video. I always seem to have tons of foam from things I buy that have been packed with it. I use it for things like cutting out the shape of tools for in a tool box so the tool doesn't shake around. I always end up cutting the foam with a break off exacto type knife. It works very poorly but the worst of it, is that I'm covered in little bits of foam and it seems to get everywhere. And you can't just brush it off, it's like electrified to your clothes. But this tool is amazing. I guess if you want to cut out a shape on the inside, you can take the cutting wire off, make a hole in the foam, thread the wire through, reattach and start cutting your shape out. I thank this talented craftsman for sharing the construction of this handy tool. Thanks very much for sharing this.

Very nice build with angle and skipping the tensioning spring. Very clean. I could see using for stage props, false building molds with plaster over, etc. Id build one but don't see a great use for it other than perhaps proof of concept on a boat or model plane. I'm building a glass cutter for chopping test tubes or large jars and thought hot wire cutter. Any way good skills.

I turned a hacksaw into a couch foam cutting knife, all to cut one very long 6 inch thick foam piece into 5 ( 2 foot x 2 foot 6 inch ) sections, to replace the foam within my 5 couch sections. Plus I cut the edges at a 45 degree angle 1 inch deep to give it a more of a rounded edge look. It all turned out quite well. The hot wire that replaced the hacksaw blade, was taken from an old dead hair dryer, and the power supply used was a very old power supply that I had that could pump out up to 2 Amps. It had Amp control potetiometers as well, so I just had to set the desired amperage, and leave it at that.

Rubber cement or contact glue would work best for the laminate just brush glue on both sides let it dry and then lay it over just make sure its lined up because you wont be getting it off unless you use Isopropyl Alcohol. Also I would add a spring to the top but that's just me I guess.
