@@RedBeardOps idk if you ever noticed but the more polished blade is it's harder for the patina or cold blueing to set it. But more so a patina issue. I struggled to the point of frustration. Last blade i was doing i was lazy on the polish said screw it. Patina was much more efficient. I roughed up the other blades a tad it made a significant difference in all 5 of my blades i did a patina on.

Great job as always James. I had a similar experience when I started making knives- but I purchased everything from Harbor Freight. I made a bunch of blades with minimal equipment- then moved to a 1x30- whatever it takes but the important thing is that is can be done.

I loved your honesty. Yes you can make a knife with cheep tools, yes it will work, yes the feeling of accomplishment is second to none, but to make something truly great it sometimes requires just that step above. That could be time, equipment, skill (from doing/learning) or just a continued love of what your doing and trying to better it and yourself. Either way for me nothing compares to the felling of achievement and the joy I get from making simple knives for my family and friends that I have been able to make from watching people like you. So thank you.

There are a couple of take-aways here, for me (a knife-making noob, but knife fan of over 40 years) 1) The chainsaw file plunge idea is inspired! How I wished I'd seen THAT idea when I started making this knife! 2) The chainsaw Spanish notch idea afterwards makes a lot of sense, too. Cheers James, for the info and PDF! Hobbies to avoid: telescope mirror making, ham radio, soaring, sailing, oboe playing, stock trading, golf, harmonica, and a few others. The knives I have made were made from rebar, so they are not as robust as the one in this video. For everyday carry, I like a Swiss Army knife... because it has a phillips screwdriver.

One thing that is helpful with the angle grinder: Save worn sanding discs for the edge work. It will be slower, but a little more forgiving. Still must be careful though. Same is true of cut off wheels. I save some that have worn down (smaller radius) to get into tight spots. Dont take them all the way down to the drive-dog of course- they will break apart at some point.

PPE: Short story.... 20 years ago I was in at 1 of the big 3. Back before all this technology so I was fortunate to have that job. When it came to rules/ regulations of course we needed PPE, but no headphones. They provided the ear protection. I was 19 and wanted music but my job more. There was this guy 1 machine over who did wear phones and lost his arm shoulder and bit of his left ear. I learned real smart real quick about the policy protection for our ears not distraction from our jobs. Had to be aware enough to hear the machines when they go off, or back up, or any sound they should not be making. Ready to hit the BIG RED button when needed. Yes I did say when not if. So filing away with a file .... sure have some shop music from a radio. But please don't plug your ears with music to the point you can't hear your equipment. Thanks guys

I have used Gough's file guide to sharpen knives too using a Smith Tri-hone I had. I removed the stones from the plastic base and glued them to scrap wood so I had a surface to put the hose clamps on while using the full length of the stones.

Hey, I typically don't comment or leave reviews. But BRO. What an Excellent video. You showed us how to get into knife making on a budget. The different ways to do things. Sources on techniques other people have done. And you brought science into it to show us the quality and how strong the material or knife you made could hold up to some grueling punishment. Very well done man. Subscribed for sure.

Black and decker will get the job done but id recommend looking at the drills at harbor freight like bauer or hercules. They are cheap and tough as nails. I’ve personally used my hercules drill to drill through 5/8 inch steel many times and i still have it. It will be so hot its smoking and burning my hand and i just let it cool down and it keeps on going. Some of the tools at harbor freight are awesome.

Great video fellow strong beardsman. Here's a sandpaper hack- put duct tape on the back of the sandpaper to increase it's strength and lifespan (it's a beard for sandpaper) You can also put chalk on your file or sandpaper to reduce the gumming up effect that tends to happen.
