Designing a unique looking marking knife that's comfortable and works well was quite a challenge. I think I did it, and it was much easier to make the knife, then to design it. I wasn't confident that it would work out, so that's why I made a test one first. I reckon this knife making project turned out pretty cool though, and I was excited to make another.
I also thought it would be great to have a scratch awl and a marking knife all in one tool. I have a metal scriber that is two ended and I like that so that's why I went ahead with that idea.
I've decided to give the new marking knife to one of my supporters on Patreon as I don't need two marking knives and it's a chance to say thank you for their amazing support!
As always I'm happy to answer any questions.

I had to rewatch this because I just received my Pask Makes marking knife and it’s glorious! If you’re on the fence don’t be, I can’t describe how beautiful yet well made and freakin sharp his marking knife is! Thank you Pask, it’s beautiful and high quality and something I’ll cherish forever! I love that we can support you and your work as your contribution to the woodworking, welding and forging communities is tremendous and can’t be understated! I look forward to using this exquisite jewel in my garage and thank you for the plans that came with your marking knife! I will absolutely be building from your plans and with the help of my Pask Makes marking knife 🤘🏼

There is an advantage to leaving one side completely flat (no leather) for woodworking marking where the craftsman needs to run the knife along the flat side of a thick board to mark another board beneath. A more accurate mark is made as opposed to coming in at an angle.
@Yuzuki1337
@Yuzuki1337 4 года назад
I reckon one flat side also makes it easier to use it as a prying tool, if ever needed :)
@keirfarnum6811
@keirfarnum6811 4 года назад
That’s how I make my marking knives; wood on just one side so the flat back can register to whatever it’s being pressed against. Works out well.

Pask that's awesome. Only advice I have is use contact adhesive instead of epoxy. Any epoxy or super glue can destroy the leather due to the exothermic reaction caused by the curing where as contact adhesive theres none and will stick solid. I'm a leather worker btw lol

Nice! I made a similair pair of knives from an old stanley plane blade that I split down the middle. The hardened part of the blade can be snapped in two with a vice and some pliers. The remains of the keyhole in the blade makes for a good finger groove. One knife has a bevel on the right side only and the other on the left side, but they are stored in a double pouch so both options are are always availible. (The one-sided bevel reduces the equally fragile and scary point on the marking knife.) An easier project with no need for additional heat- treatment and a good use for a used-up plane blade.

Hi, quick advice, if you want to make your touchmark to be embossed more distinctively, you can either slightly dampen the leather before punching it in, or heat your touch mark (not very much, probably somewhere between 150 and 200°C, I don't know for sure) and then just press it in. I personally prefer the latter for the touchmark. The latter, by the way, works not only on veg tan leather, but oil tan as well.

Great job of the knife. Hardening and tempering are becoming a lost art and you were bang on. Perhaps 2 hours is a bit long I thought and it's important not to get any fingerprints on the surface once it's polished and before tempering. The colours are an important sign of achieving the correct temper. Really nice tool you made, thanks for sharing. Allan

Beautiful job! I don't yet have a belt sander of the quality I would need to make this but one day I might give it a try. The real gem here came during viewing this video! I noticed, briefly, that you mounted a thien separator on top of a blue (food grade) plastic barrel (had to return and pause to be certain). I had been stressing since the company that sold me the one I bought to transport water for my daughter's horses had nothing I wanted (old cinnamon, cardboard, barrel) thinking the blue barrel I have and no longer use might collapse under vacuum but I realize that not much vacuum pressure would exist there anyway. I have a cheap Harbor Freight dust and chip vac that I will use with my now unused blue barrel along with a, yet to be built, then separator so I can free up my shop vac which is attached to my chip and dust collection shop routing which works great (3" PVC copper and node/screw grounded end to end to prevent static ignition).
