It's a good practice to prime the engine's oiling system before installing it into the car or starting the engine for the first time. I do this for a couple of reasons... to fill up all the oil passageways and oil filter so that you aren't starting it up with no oil, also to see if your engine does build up oil pressure, and also to see (with your valve covers removed) if your top end is getting oiled as well.
