The main reason I just put a down payment on a haas this month was, because of these videos. I love them, they are informative and I’m confident that if I have an issue… you have a video for that! Lol The haas was out of my budget , but I made some sacrifices to make it work, I was only able to get a barebones vf2, I cannot describe how much I wish I could afford the SS - but it just wasn’t in the cards.

Happy Birthday Blake! Thanks for watching, and I’d like to say that I need a TM-1 as well! Great machine. I thought about getting one for my garage to do G-jobs. In the past I thought I’d have to go get a phase converter (John Saunders has some good info online, American Rotary Phase Converters, for VF machines), but we can actually run the TM1 or TL1 on Single Phase. Thanks for commenting. - Mark, Haas Tip-of-the-day

A setup sheet with photos and stuff, and even a section for tools.. At the place of my work we just get a sheet with written steps like "drill this at L-70 of the part" with a technical drawing to deduce all the depths and placement. Then we get a program that says where to catch the x, y, z but its also just written so lot of confusions takes place and we got to call the program guys down to us. As for the collets, vices.. we just wander around the working place, from machine to machine to find the correct ones and deduce if they are good or not.

This is very helpful. I've been watching your videos to self teach myself how to do this. Can your team please organize and structure your videos into a learning pathway with a playlist for students? That way a person can identify where they are in their personal knowledge and begin at a logical place? Currently I just watch a video and hope that the next recommended one makes sense. Maybe organize like the beginning of your video; operator knowledge, setup knowledge, programmer knowledge, apprentice to master to for each category.

I'd love to see the Hass setup sheet. I'm currently in the process of updating my own shop's setup sheets, and would love to see what a large company like Hass does to make them setter friendly, concise, and what they consider important, it looked pretty good from what I saw.

I'd also love to learn more about what Haas considers good practice on how to store proven NC, programme revision control, how they handle tool numbers (per programme, or global tool numbers?). There's a lot of discussion on good work holding, programming, and other things, but very little it seems on good shop documentation practice from any video producer.

Fantastic video! We plan on investing in a VF2 or VF4 for internal parts manufacturing, with the machine running a few times per month. The tips on removing rust from tool holders, surfacing the tool plate and the vices.. it seems like there is a lot of maintenance on the machines and that things might lock up if you leave tools in the system. Are we fooling ourselves if we think that we can make a "parts on demand" where we leave pallet systems/tools ready to run?
@haasautomation
@haasautomation 5 лет назад
Jens Agerskov - Leaving tooling setup in the machine is not an issue, in practice. It’s easy enough to build fixtures for small jobs as well, and just swap-out the fixture plate when it is time to run more of those parts. Check out these other videos for more information. Probe your fixture: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fFZi6rWIcuU.html. Run multiple parts: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NutStjpWJck.html - Mark, Haas Tip-of-the-day

Thanks Mark and Haas! Quick question -- why not dry-run a couple inches above the blank? I keep a 2" gage block handy, and typically dry run jobs that are going to get close to a vise jaw 2" above the part. Makes it easy to stop the machine at the point where a tool is going to be close to an immovable object, and slide that 2" block under the tool to make sure there is still "daylight". Just a thought. I met you at IMTS in 2016, and you are every bit as friendly and "engaged" in person as you are in the videos. You're a great image and promoter for Haas! Thanks! :-)

Nice, as always. Quick question, not about the video, how fast are you running that facemill? Speed and feed? Just wondering.
@haasautomation
@haasautomation 6 лет назад
Anshel - That particular tool is a Seco 32mm Combimaster, R217.69-1632.RE-12-4AN. I was running it at S10000, F238in/min (F6000mm/min), with a .200” (5mm) depth of cut on aluminum. It can handle a faster feedrate at that RPM though, I was only going .006”/.150mm per tooth. The TSC allows it to run fast. For any indexable tool, I like to go with the smallest diameter I can get away with, this allows me to keep my RPM’s up, and then find a brand that can give me the most inserts for that size. This gives me the highest RPM, the most inserts, the highest feedrate. - Mark, Haas Tip-of-the-day.

all looks great, but I don't work with light weight materials... and the reaching in to load and unload the machine, or push on the crane to get the load to the center of the table is a pain. For those machinist that use the work probe, advanced macro programing can be a major time and memory saver.

@haasautomation 6 лет назад
Lefox61 - SSV Spindle Speed Variation is available now on Haas Mills with Next Gen Controls (NGC). We’ll use an M138/M139 for Mills, where we’d use an M38/M39 on our Lathes. “M138 P500 E1.0” will vary the spindle speed by 500 RPM (above and below programmed S value), every second. M139 turns off the feature. For more info, download the latest Mill Manual from the Haas Website, and search for M138. Let us know how things work for you! TOD@Haascnc.com - Mark, Haas Tip-of-the-day

Since when do HAAS controls not require O##### program names?
@haasautomation
@haasautomation 6 лет назад
xmaswitguns - I know, right. That was big change. On the NGC (Next Gen Control) the file names can be most anything you want. We can put the files in any folder structure you’d like as well, which helps to organize things. The Control still reads the “O” number as you load the program, so it works with any of our legacy programs (M98, G65 subprograms). We are doing a video on Subprograms, and we’ll talk about the ability to Map a sub-call to any file (Filename) program, anywhere on your network, with just a couple button pushes. Thanks for your comment. - Mark, Haas Tip-of-the-day

I hope the Haas Automation marketing department knows these videos probably sell more Haas machines than 100-4 color 2-page glossy ads. It's about time the CNC control technology gets with the late 20th Century. O-numbers are so 1970... and the ability to network the subprograms/subroutines within a network is getting towards 2010...

Are you meant to warm up your machine with a tool in it?
@haasautomation
@haasautomation 6 лет назад
David - The short answer is: I always have a tool in the spindle when warming it up. My reasons for doing this are a bit outdated though. On many machines that I ran in the past, if you didn’t have a tool in the spindle when running it, the drawbar could do bad things as it rattled around while spinning while not under tension/compression. If you have run your Haas spindle without a tool in it, don’t worry about it, they can handle it, but I still think it is best practice to keep a tool in the spindle when its running - especially if you have different brands of machines in your shop. - Mark, Haas Tip-of-the-day

Ian - In this video I was using a Castrol Rustilo DW 90 HF, it used to be called Safecoat DW 90. This is what I have readily available, here at the factory. This is a thin Dewatering and Protection oil. I’ll use WD40 as well sometimes. A light spray of this oil keeps my vises, collets, and tools rust and corrosion free. - Mark, Haas Tip-of-the-day

On ebay you can buy a 2.0 USB flash drive with as little capacity as 64MB, costs around $1 with shipping free, so go on and buy a handful of them. Just make sure you don't rely on them as a storage or only backup device. OK for transferring to and from machine
@haasautomation
@haasautomation 6 лет назад
Hi Les - I bet it will. The reason I mentioned the SanDisk Extreme, was because it is lightning fast and I’ve personally checked it on new & old Haas controls. We update the USB drivers on the control all the time, but they don’t always get updated constantly (online) like they would on your Apple/Windows laptop, so some number of really unique or cheap USB sticks might not work (driver was never loaded for that specific stick). The SanDisk Extreme transfer files way faster also (Amazon, $20). Of course, the vast majority of sticks out there that work perfectly well. Thanks for the comment. Mark - Haas Tip-of-the-day.

In this video I was using a Castrol Rustilo DW 90 HF, it used to be called Safecoat DW 90. This is what I have readily available, here at the factory. This is a thin Dewatering and Protection oil. I’ll use WD40 as well sometimes. A light spray of this oil keeps my vises, collets, and tools rust and corrosion free. - Mark, Haas Tip-of-the-day

It pains me to see Kurt vises on a cnc machine. It's stone age technology and there are MUCH more intelligent choices in today's market.

What vises are you liking these days? I’ve had decades of good luck with Kurt vises, and their new DX6, but am always looking. Reliability, price, holding power, jaw styles/price, clearance (5-axis)? - Mark, Haas Tip-of-the-day

just a pity you say 'See other video', remind you of the TV cooking shows???- aka "here's one I prepped earlier" what a cop out, not even willing to do anything out of "time-lapse" mode, NOT a video for beginners, PS: who cares if a video goes 1 hour or more just tell us how it works at a speed we can see and understand.

Andy - Lol. “I’ll just add a dash of salt to this bag of groceries, and voila, beef bourguignon”. I love long-run videos. We play with short videos and long ones, and I think we’ve just decided to make a video as long as it needs to be to cover a single topic. Work in progress. Thanks for the comment. - Mark, Haas Tip-of-the-day
