I am currently making this quilt and I would like to give everyone a word of advice. Do not cut the angled edges off of your hexi’s until you unfold the sashing..... I trimmed all of the black edges off of a whole stack because I wasn’t paying attention. You have to unfold the Sashing first after you sew it to the Hexi!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣
I must be "angly-challenged" too. I couldn't get started with the mini hexi braid. But I kept at it and I think the secret is not cutting the tabs off when you cut your hexies. It makes it easier to align in this case. I also pressed the one to place on top the quarter inch and it finally went together. Yes, this first one was giving me fits and all the rest are easy. Is it just me - anyone have a hard time with the first one?
Is it also possible to make a long braid (let's say 60" long) and then divide it into multiple squares? There is now so much waste with each block but the parts you cut off could also serve as the top parts in another block? Another idea that I think would look cool: rows of braids! So in this case 4 horizontal rows of 37,5" braids.
What a great stash buster design too. I've recently sorted all my fabric and didn't realise I had plenty of black fabric.. I also have lots of large half-metre fabrics too which could come together so nicely... OMG moment.... XMAS fabrics with red or green sashing !!!!! Even just a table runner.... if I used smaller half hexie template... The possibilities are endless... thank you for the tutorial.. must go now and play in fabric land
Oh my! What a great idea. I just cut a bunch of 1/2 hexis, Can't wait to do this, it looks like stained glass! Always amazed at the new projects MSQC comes up with, and how well you explain it.
Precioso me encanto, yo trabajo Quilt a mano pues no te herramientas de trabajo, pero no me importa tener mis dedos maltratados amo lo q hago aunque no me quede perfecto hago felices a mis amigas regalándoles un regalito hecho con mis manos. Admiro muchísimo su trabajo pues aprendo mucho, gracias 😊
Thanks Jenny, for the great tutorials! I just started quilting this year and have already made 4 quilt tops just from your tutorials. This is so much fun, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
With such a large amount cut off of each block to square it, I bet if you made one continuous braid and then cut it into blocks, you could get an additional block or two or three. I think I'll try it. :)
Hi MSQC, are you able to use a layer cake with only 40 pieces of material to do this quilt? I have a batik layer cake that I am thinking about using, but it only has 40 instead of the 42 cuts. Thank you for your help with this. Gay
u need 72 hexies... 2 out of ear 10" sq. and 42 sqs. is more than enough... and u need exactly 24 24...1 1/2 in strips of background for 72 hexis... 3 will go on ea. strip
I used 18 per braid then cut my squares. I then used the large piece cut from the top to finish the last square and ended up with enough extra blocks to make matching pillows. Also eliminated much of the waste.
You can imagine my surprise when I saw this. I was just working on a friendship braid, sashing in black one end that will be the middle creating a zig zag down the middle. I wish I could add a photo! My point is I couldn't figure out what to do next. Until this video! You have given me so many ideas on making blocks instead of the long braid! Thank you Jenny!
Hi Jenny, firstly I just want to let you know how much I enjoy your tutorials. I am new to quilting (been doing it for a month now) and I was wondering with this hexi braid if you can just do one long braid and then cut your blocks to size from the long braid? (an effort to minimise wastage) or do you have to make the blocks individually? Thanks again for the tutorials. Ali from Australia
+Ali Tuckerman I made a long braid and then cut two or three blocks at a time and just continued with that process until it was complete. I felt that worked very well and cut the waste factor out completely.
Beautiful as always. I wonder if you have tried using the smaller half hexi and then use jelly roll strips? Just wondered how it would work because I have some beautiful jelly roll material that would be beautiful. Thanks again for your wonderful tutorials.....another reason why I love waking up on Friday morning!
Loved this quilt, so many fabrics you can use. I'm kind of a Matchy, Matchy person, but using this pattern, I might be able to go out of my comfort zone. Thanks so much!
if making this with yardage rather than a layer cake, how many yards of colours total would I need? I've got tons of left over fabrics from previous quilts that I would use. Can't wait to try this
Dear Jane. I 've tried doing this project, but the measures in centimeters do not match1 - How many centimeters I use to do the black stripes?2 - How many centimeters I use to do the square?3 - How many centimeters I cut in the half the sides? The measures you use are with the margins for sewing? If it is possible for you to clarify these doubts, I'm sure that I will to do this wonderful work in Patcwork. Thanks a lot.
So, just a note. Don't forget to iron the sashing open before you trim..... Otherwise, the seam ripper is going to be your new best friend, and you'll have to cut more 1 1/2 inch strips... Don't ask me how I know?
It llooks great. I think I saw it in a 2016 issue. But I can't find it. Which book is it in? THX can't wait to start but i don't to keep referring to my phone.
It seems to me that there would be a lot less waste if you made one long strip with all the half hexis and kept cutting the blocks from the long strip. That way, you would have waste only at the top and bottom of the strip instead of with every block.
Hello I from colombia I like your work. My englihs is not good but try again of uderstan I like yours publique the medidas please your explication is very good but I don'n understand the medidas for cut tela plis su trabajo es admirable las amo sigo y hago todo lo q puedo hacer pero hay veces q quisiera tener las medidas para q me quede perfecto si pudieran colocarlas al comienzo del video seria genial por q esplican tan bn q no es necesario saber ingles para poder hacerlo pero en este video me gustaria tener las medidas de las toras negras y de los exagonos de antemano gracias por compartir
ahhh!!! You have just provided that perfect tutorial for the kaffe fassett daily deal layer cake I ordered. have been trying to find a pattern for it. NOW I am inspired. thank you!!!!
This is really lovely. Been meaning to get a stain glass pattern, now I can just do this one! As always Jenny you deliver the best tutorials, best blocks and all with lovely colour patterns. Thanks Jenny.
I LOVE THIS Quilt!!! It looks like a stained glass window! It's gorgeous! Oh I cant wait till I am done with the 9 quilts i have to finish! Then I am going to make this one! Y'all do the most beautiful work!
Hi Jenny I'm loving watching your tutorials! I've only just started quilting and thought I should do something with all the scraps I have left over. Do you think you could do a tutorial on crumb quilts?
+Troy C that is so great! We do have a tutorial that uses 10" foundation papers for scrappy quilting. You can check it out here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iZ02NM9-USw.html
I took all of the scraps, because there were a lot of them, cut them into 2 1/2 inch strip pieces and randomly sewed them into one long 2 1/2 inch strip. There was enough to make a second border, then added a second second black strip on the other side of the second border...then I added the 5 1/2 inch border. It really added interest and looked like broken glass framing the “stained glass”. I was so happy with the results. Hope that makes sense. :)
ok... after sewing several together... ea seam is uneven..... trim it and sew next... and so on...to keep them straight...there is enough room and will allow for the trimming
I am a little confused. I have never use pre-cuts, so excuse my ignorance. Are the 10 Stacks actually ten inch wide thus making the Half Hexie 9 1/2 by 4 1/2 since you need a 1/2 inch for seam allowance all the way round? Or are the stacks cut to 10 1/2?
+Marietta Walker You know, I have never done a hexie either and I think I really am confused. For the half hexie to be half of a ten inch full hexie it would shorter than half the length of the long side! Geometry, ugh!
Dear Jane, Congr. your patch is beautiful.I love this Project. But I have a problem. I don't have the templete 10". Them, it's dificult to me. I need it. I use only in centímetros. Do you understand me? Thanks for your help.
It depends how big your quilt is and width of your desired backing fabric. You can buy backing fabric which is 108" wide. It has a looser weave than quilting cotton so the quilting needles can easily puncture it. Another option is a large flat sheet. The last option is to piece your binding from your choice of fabrics.
I think that would look great with some of the Kaffe Fassett Collective fabrics. I have stack of around 100 random “samples” to use up and think a twin or even double size in this pattern would make a nice dent in the stash :)
Jenny, Could you do this quilt in a quilt-as-you-go style..you know, quilt each block with the sashing inside the block, then put on the sashing in between the blocks and sew the sashing down on the strips that form the blocks? Would that be possible?
Why stop at 6 half hexies? If one would continue with the braid and then cut the 12 1/2 cut blocks from the much longer braid there would be a great savings of fabric and sewing time.
I am thinking of making my pastor a stole. If I used this idea with the small half hexie how wide a black strip should I use? I'm thinking cut 1 " finishing 1/2 inch. What do ya'all think?
