I make a saya for the chef's knife I made last week. Watch the making of the knife here: • A Chef's knife I make the saya from a chunk of cherry wood I had laying around. The saya protects the as well as your fingers. Besides... a cover can look nice too.

I was going to give you a hard time about using the power tools, but I love how this came out. Awesome job!

Thanks man! Hand tools and power tools both have their time and place for sure 👌 A little while back I made one entirely by hand(no video though)

The only thing I would do, would be to shape the end like the knife shape (the blade style), so you know what knife inside the sheath (Saya). Ok....and maybe I'd use something other than oil/wax for the finish. I like the extra room at the tip, to prevent the knife-tip from getting chipped. Great job !!

Thanks! 👊 Yeah, I only left it square because everyone makes the knife shape. Thanks for watching!!

Geweldig werk Robin!

Nice work you got my like! What you use in the inside? it was leather?

Yes it was a thin strip of leather! Thanks for watching!! 👊👊

Leather not a good idea for inside as it draws moisture?
@RobinCoomans
@RobinCoomans 7 лет назад
Good point David, it isn't ideal for sure.. I haven't used leather since. That being said I don't it is is an issue when used properly. The knife should always be dry (and perhaps lightly oiled), as moisture could be an issue with the wood and the steel as well. Thanks for watching!

when I make wood sheaths I do them from 3 pieces. a front and back then I cut a piece for the center the thickness of the blade or a touch thicker. I trace the knife blade out on my wood and cut it out on scroll saw. then clamp it all up and clean up on the sander when done. It is so much faster than the router or chisel I have done both ways. I also use the same process for hidden tang knives
@RobinCoomans
@RobinCoomans 6 лет назад
That's a great way to go about it. At the time I made this, I had bought the router maybe a day or 2 ago so I wanted to try it out. Thanks for watching!

thanks man, i would like to craft knife, could you give me some advices? like, which type of steel should i use, mainly materials advices
@RobinCoomans
@RobinCoomans 7 лет назад
I am no expert on this either, but I'll try to help. Prepare to read a little bit :D *For steel I often use 'used' steel like sawblades, files and rasps, leaf springs from cars... Or if you want to buy new stock go for some simple carbon steels like O1 or 1085 (look up local designation numbers as they may differ from region to region) Those steels are easy to harden (read below) *Then you need a way to shape it: files and an angle grinder are the cheapest options, but they also work great. *A way to heat the steel red hot. I used to do it in an old BBQ with a hairdryer, now I use a smallgas forge. But the (char)coal fire is easily hot enough with a blower, make sure you have a magnet handy to check when you are ready to quench. Note: If you for example want to make a knife from an old file with a file, you must 'anneal' the old file first. This is: heating up till not magnetic and let it cool down slowly (just leave it in the fire). This will make the steel very soft and easy to shape. *For the quench: I just use some vegetable oil or peanut oil (or similar) heat it up a bit by putting a small, hot piece of steel in the oil. When your knife isn't magnetic, dunk it in there. Then put it in the over at 200°C for an hour or so to temper it. *Lastly for the handle: I most often just use some hardwood, epoxy to glue it on. Sometimes I may use some brass pins. Also, don't forget to buy some sandpaper in different grits. Use this to clean the steeel, finish the handle and even sharpen the knife (use flat surface, some mdf for example). Thats basicaly it. Hope this helps getting you started! I would, however, read up on some forums and watch a few more yt videos, but it's easy enough to get a useable knife on your first (or a first few) attempts.
@RobinCoomans
@RobinCoomans 7 лет назад
No, kitchen oven won't work for quench, you can use it for tempering though. For the quench you need a very hot fire. This is what I use now: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ljvNZvCCXKY.html a small gas forge I made. But I used to do it in a charcoal fire with a hairdryer to blow in it. For a small knife you could use a small propane torch. The charcoal & blower (works with regular wood too) is the cheapest and easiest in my opinion to start of with... that's what I did at least ;) You can probably see this in one of my older videos too (shameless plug haha)

Robin Coomans yeah if it's a drill press where is the stand? I'm so confused!
@RobinCoomans
@RobinCoomans 7 лет назад
Christian Van Ness It is a small table top version, so maybe it's not very obvious. At about 5:20 the vertical tube on the middle/right is part of the stand.

what did you coat your sheath with?
@RobinCoomans
@RobinCoomans 8 лет назад
That's a mixture of raw linseed oil and parafin wax, probably 4-5 parts oil to 1 part wax. Thanks for watching!
@victorvondoom2048
@victorvondoom2048 8 лет назад
does it leave a waxy feeling on the sheath?or does it feel "glossy"? I was planning on putting Minwax pre stain, stain and finish on my saya, but wasn't sure if it's food safe or not
@RobinCoomans
@RobinCoomans 8 лет назад
I rubbed it off and buffed it several times and it leaves a smooth, satin sort of feel. Not waxy or really glossy. I don't have experience with minwax, so I don't know if it is food safe or not. But this mix of raw linseed oil and parafin wax (or bees wax) is definetly food safe! Although I don't recommend eating it ;)
@FreqBand
@FreqBand 7 лет назад
It doesn't need to be food-safe......the Saya is never touching food, or the knife.

Camping or keeping it from getting chipped/ keeping it sharp if you store it in a drawer with a bunch of other silverware.

there is an easier way .... you could make it with three thinner pieces of wood and you just cut the middle one with the saw and glue them all together is more clean like this
@RobinCoomans

I don't like to be negative but man the workman ship its real bad if for a nakiri knife the shape would be nice but not for a chef knife and the inside was very bad take a bit more time and make the inside as well as the outside
