I just got a 10 acre spot here in CA that backs up to thousands of acres of national forest without a lot of great food sources. Been trying to research all I can on making various food sources and hidey holes to draw deer off the NFS land. Your channel has become my new obsession. THANK YOU for all information.

Paciently waiting for the end of the month here in North Carolina I'm thinking of doing control burn like you mentioned on one of my small plots in the pines to get rid of pine straw

Thanks , on them small plots do you come in and blow off the leaves after they drop ?

We do if they are smothering the crop.

Wondering what to do with my. Top layer of "duff" as I am dealing with 2 inches of it. I'm planting wheat, oats, some peas and cereal rye for a fall plot ? Anything you can tell me will help greatly! I am just east of your proving ground . Thank you so much

Jon - if you are describing leaves, debris, etc., we like to use a prescribed fire to remove them and prepare a seedbed.

Are you familiar with Dr. Elaine Ingham's work with bacterial and fungal compost teas? Ive been playing with fungal tea's and charcoal/biochar in a heavy clay area i wanted to plant a winter food plot in. Its been pretty amazing so far, about 4 years in.

Do you plant a Hidey Hole plot just in the fall and don’t do anything in the spring and summer? Or do you need to plant something else in the spring?
@GrowingDeerTV
@GrowingDeerTV Год назад
I also plant them during the spring to suppress weeds and improve the soil for the fall crop.

What do we do if we usually don’t get a good rain until September. And our first frost is is early October.
@GrowingDeerTV
@GrowingDeerTV Год назад
Seith - without soil moisture, crops grow very slow or fail. So I wait for rain or a strong forecast for rain! Cereal rye will grow during the winter when the temps are above 30.

Thank you. You guys do great work with all your content. I am planning on putting down lots of cereal rye this fall as soon as rain is in the forecast. God bless y’all

How do you make a fire break on a small plot without tilling or discing? Leaf blower?? How wide?
@usernamehere6061
@usernamehere6061 Год назад
You can suffice with just a couple bushhog passes. The wider you make it the less smoke you'll have to breathe if you have a spot and need to put it out. Edit: That is if you have an atv sprayer with water or a really good leafblower
@GrowingDeerTV
@GrowingDeerTV Год назад
Ben - we simply use a leaf blower and or a weed eater and rake. Just remove the fuel. We make ours about 4' wide for small plots, but the width depends on the amount of fuel. More fuel requires a wider break (fuel free area).

Have you ever planted fruit trees or recommended them?
@GrowingDeerTV
@GrowingDeerTV Год назад
I have a small tree plot. If you enjoy maintaining and caring for trees (pruning, etc,), they are fun! I prefer planting plots and they produce more tons per acre!
@kristophstjames4143
@kristophstjames4143 5 месяцев назад
so scattered seed works on this plot so why would you drill the other plots that look similar? Couldn't i scatter seed on my untilled grassy plots like this and then cultipack some of the seed in?
@GrowingDeerTV
@GrowingDeerTV 5 месяцев назад
I believe I answered this for you before? A cultiplack doesn't bury seeds. Seeds or new seedings will not outcompete an established stand of grass. Drilling almost always produces a better crop than broadcasting, but broadcasting, when used in good conditions, works well when a drill isn't available.
@kristophstjames4143
@kristophstjames4143 5 месяцев назад
@@GrowingDeerTV yes, thank you, you did answer my question but what's confusing is , your seeds were just scattered on the ground - they dont need to be covered? my cultipacker packs most of the seeds down so i thought that would be better than just counting on rain to bury them, no?

I don't have the room for a food plot on my hunting area. At what point do you decide to just let God's natural life be what it is. And hunt what you got?
@kaylacarpenter1902
@kaylacarpenter1902 Год назад
If you don’t have room for a food plot, I would focus on the natural forage. Get rid of the stuff that doesn’t have any value and spray a fertilizer on the stuff that provides something for the wildlife in your area.

Never put cereal grains with brassica plants. They i.e. oats wheat etc. Will choke your brassicas.

Nah. I have been planting blends for decades without issue. It's all about creating the blend correctly. I always want 7-10 species in my blends so there's something to attract deer during the early, mid, and late season and to help improve the soil's quality!

That is the benefit of crimping to exterminate cover crop. Ground will hold enough moisture to get you through until rain comes.
