Those DIY kits should be on a restricted list! They will for sure get kids hooked on model engineering. I am 81 now and got hooked via Mechano (actually "Trix") at about the age of 6....and my grandpa bought me a little stationary steam engine that was available at the time, a simple oscillating cylinder job, but still useful. It didn't take long for me to use the Trix set to make a chassis, compound reduction gear and get that little engine chuffing down the hallway dripping water, oil and methylated spirits on the carpet. This was in 1948, and my mother was very understanding about it. I went on to build model aircraft for many years (My dad worked at de Havilland's) and my engineering tools extended to a mini lathe, drill press and lots of taps, dies, files etc. by the time I was in my early 20s. Then I got interested in shooting and started making bits for guns, which I still do both for myself and my clients. I now have a larger lathe (the same model of Boxford that I used at school in the 1950s!), a more modern milling machine and Mig, Tig and MMA welders and of course a plasma cutter. Torches for soldering and brazing go without saying. Moving house became a real nightmare, so I am determined that I will only move from here in a box! That' a very well produced kit, quite costly I would imagine..... I cannot see how any child with a pulse could fail to be captivated by it. Parents need to know that the addiction is not curable, and treatment therapy (hand and machine tools up the wazoo) is expensive but rewarding, and helps to keep children out of other more harmful mischief.... 😀 I always had a yen to build a steam locomotive, but there's not enough spare hours left in my life now, so I just go to watch the local club's at their facility in town... Great video... thanks.....

Interesting - I shall explore further. Just a thought, when you first tried to start it, the hot steam condensed out in the cold so it was slow to start and water to mop up. Is it worth running a heat gun over the workings before firing up, to preheat the working parts and get things going quicker and less messier?

Thanks for this great and instructive video ; Nice engine, well designed but these criminal silicone pipes and burner … Cotton wicks could replace the steel mesh wicks to allow light tilt 😊… Replacing the steam line would ask more work… but is still doable ! It could certainly do with a larger boiler but that remains a pleasant model 😊
@AdeSwash
@AdeSwash 7 месяцев назад
Hi Olivvapor, I agree, the silicon hoses are a let-down and it could do with a bigger boiler to get more runtime, I do intend to replace the piping with copper feed pipes, and a few other 'modifications' but out of the box it is still a nice little project and a fun engine to build and run :) Kind Regards. Nice little model mate. I personally feel that these kits are far too expensive. The price is ridiculous. In fact, the price of nearly all new live steam engines is ridiculous. I know that there is much engineering that goes into these shiny copper and brass models but they will not attract youngsters into engineering because they are just so expensive. They seem to attract old guys with too much money to burn. 😅 I just watched a guy build a steam engine with an old shock absorber as the cylinder and piston and another piece of pipe for the steam valve. What was the cost of materials? The answer is nothing. Plus he learned how a real steam engine works. Now I did read that you started off in the back shed, like I hope to do. So I assume that you know about steam engines. I am still learning. It's the price that gets me angry. The sellers are very greedy. I know some of the steam engines are antique and are desirable by collectors. That's fine, but the brand-new ones are overpriced. I have a couple of old Mamods that I got working but There is a limit to what I will pay. Anyway, that's my rant. 🤣👍
@AdeSwash
@AdeSwash 3 месяца назад
Hi Mike, I like your rant! and I do agree that many model engines are out of the price range for youngsters, but as you say, the Mamods can still be bought fairly cheaply second-hand. Now I have built many steam stationary engines, mostly scratch built from bar stock metals, using my machines in my workshop shed, and this has given me an appreciation of the of the work involved in creating scratch engines, not to mention the time and money invested. I don't get as much time as I would like in the workshop, and sometimes the idea of starting a lengthy new project can be a bit daunting, so these kits are a great way to enjoy time in the workshop and get fairly instant results. For me also, I can often see ideas to improve these models, either visually or mechanically, so I can spend extra time tinkering and experimenting with them, rather than staring at a long list of components from a drawing that all need making, so it's difficult to put a price on enjoyment. As Oscar Wilde once wrote ... some people know the price of everything, and the value of nothing. Regards Ade

slacken off the screws under the base just a tiny bit and spin the flywheel, it should be free, the gently pinch the screws back up while rotating the flywheel. Dont forget the oil!
@richardmarkham8369
@richardmarkham8369 6 месяцев назад
So after some more tinkering, I got this kit to run nice and steady without running out of steam. Main thing was to stop steam leaking from the whistle and not opening the main steam valve too far. I'm not seeing the governor operate as I prefer to keep the rpm as slow as possible. For it to start working the engine needs to be going quite fast. If I swap the belt to the larger pulley to get more rpm at the governor, it puts a little too much drag on the flywheel and you get a bit of oscillation. Here it is ticking over nice and slow! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pc_EWaLSa3A.htmlsi=wJ91q1XCAxOnskuj

OK, so I bought this kit, its really well made and goes together really well. I'm having a little difficulty getting it to run for more than a few seconds. I've not seen any steam escape from the pressure relief valve so I think I'm losing steam from the whistle. Also wondering if the burners are up to the job. I'm using meths. The wicks are metal gauze on mine. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DT5MTI4fYHE.htmlsi=IgVPjNsUDAVmrY29

Hi Richard, sorry for the late reply. The whistle will be the problem, I tightened mine up several times but it starts to leak again, I dont think the O rings are much good. I taped mine up in the end and will probably remove it sometime. The wicks are metal on mine too but seem to work fine. Once up and running, reduce the speed to a tickover just above stall point, and it will run for about ten minutes. It will also start speeding up as the pressure increases, but you have to keep the steam demand lower than the boilers capability to make it. Its a good fun little engine but it has its quoibles, like most engines. Hope you get it sorted

The Walking Beam and Parallel mechanism were both completely unnecessary. Just lavish mechanical art work of the day.

Why do you think this @RIPPERTON ?

@@AdeSwash Evolution did away with the walking beam design by necessity or common sense but not a moment too soon. I can imagine the deafening clang of that giant penny dropping. Try to calculate the sheer tonnage of cast iron hoisted into the lofts of pump houses and factories around the world at the expense of clients in the name of "Gee it looks great". Even double acting pistons were too much trouble with stuffing boxes known to leak. The best solution of piston to crank is what we have today in all cars. The gudgeon pin built into the piston.

Hi @@RIPPERTON , I'm very sorry but I cannot fully understand the point you are trying to make, can you point me to some external links as to why the beam and linkage was abandoned in external combustion engines of the industrial age.

Using the beam to drive a flywheel defeats the purpose for which the beam was invented, but it is after all only a model and adequately demonstrates how reciprocating motion is converted into rotational motion. The extra pulley on the crankshaft would allow the engine to drive accessories from manufacturers such as Willesco, Bing and Mamod to make "play" more interesting and informative. Beam engines were mostly employed in mining to drive vertical reciprocating pumping rods which sometimes went many hundreds of feet underground to dewater the mine. Early steam engines used the principle of vacuum created by condensing steam rather than steam expansion creating pressure in a cylinder. They were slow and inefficient but could run non stop for a very long time. The heavy beam provided the inertia and transferred the vertical motion of the piston outside the engine house to the mine.

@@dwansbo - in real beam engines the flywheel is the momentum, without it the engine will not run. The beam is merely a transport of motion from linear to rotation

Ade, yeah Keith would be interested item to assemble one of one. Where is product come from. We are on a different time/line. I use to travel all over our world. I'm wondering if it will cause import forms. Currently my darn email address is messed up, otherwise we would be able to talk in better details. Anyway I really would love to get my hands on one. Take care Ades....

@gregwarner3753 What you were hearing was the original recording from 1921, recorded on a wax cylinder. That was how they 'did it right' 100 years ago.

Well Tony, I think I did progress well actually!, take a look at some of my scratch built engine videos on my channel. I have subbed to your channel and enjoyed your little steam machines, and look forward to seeing you progress. Mecano and Mamod were a big influence on my appreciation of steam and stationary engines and mechanics when I was a child, it took me another 40 years of absence from machining to get back there, and building more advanced model engines. I agree this engine and video is for beginners, so yes, a macano-like bolt-together engine, but it is aimed at beginners to the hobby, as I am sure you were once a beginner. If my work gets just one new youngster into model engineering then I will have accomplished my mission. Ask yourself, what is your mission Tony?
