I am showing how I use a simple sewing machine and only the zig zag stitch to work with Jersey and I also show you what negative ease is, why it is necessary in working with elastic fabrics and how I plan it into the pattern.

Though it is for everyone who wants to understand pattern making and is looking for an easy path into the fantastic world of infinite possibilities of pattern modifications.
In my classes, I talk a lot about the importance of understanding the mechanics of garment construction as reflected in the pattern making, the fit and the understanding of the material itself in order to become confident, independent fabricators. To become able to realize ever more creative, intricate and stunning costume designs.
Often, I suggest to look at existing garments and I tell my students that I learned a whole lot by taking the patterns of my favorite clothes. Not only to understand them better, but also to make them exactly how I wanted them. It is so liberating to be able to do that. And it doesn't take much!
So I thought I just start somewhere and dive in. This is the beginning of a casual and fun series of many more to follow, that aim to demystify the Art and Science of pattern making, one garment at a time. I am sharing what I believe is essential to know to successfully understand pattern making and I am also sharing tips and tricks and neat material facts along the way. Knowing the materials well was essential for my career and I would love for you to have that too!
