Edward Simpson I use large-ish wooden beads (I got a bag full off eBay, cost about 5 AUD). One of the best things about them is you can thread them on to a length of paracord due to the hole through them and hang them off you pack or whatever. I’ve been doing this for years and haven’t lost a bead yet 👍🏻
@@edwardsimpson6344 yeah but if you have a slingshot and need small game to survive the marble will be the way to go. plus its smooth and wont tear your tarp.

I can relate. My husband and I use to go camping and hiking every chance we got. He passed away in 2008 and I am on oxygen now. So my camping days are over. I really enjoy watching Lonnie and Connie's channel

Good one. I actually stayed in this setup in Hawaii, on Diamond Head crater. Never paid for a hotel room! A 15 minute walk down the hillside to free shower and bathrooms. I only paid for my plane fair and meals.
John Edwards So if you go on holidays somewhere, if you have a tent or something you can simply go into the bush and camp anywhere? Do authorities have problems with that, so that in some places you have to do it a bit on the sly? So for example, if I went to Borneo and took a tent, would it be possible to simply set my tent up anywhere I went?
Yes, A Jay exactly. I did this 6 times in and around Europe. First 2 times I took a small tent, and on the other 4, I took a Bivouac. You just need to plan your trip so that you have a place to camp. Never build a fire unless you are in a designated camp site, use a small stove. Do not take a bright colored tent so as to not stand out! I always used a dark green one. Common sense is your best friend, always find a safe place away from people.

Lonnie, I really like the way you modified the original idea to include a floor and more head room. Looks to be secure, warm, and comfortable! Fairly simple to set up, as well.

I have seen various applications of tarp usage for shelters, and your revised application by far provides the best coverage for wet conditions without using a heat/stove inside. I use a tarp as a ground cloth mostly and place a tent on top if it. Now, I could eliminate the excess weight of a tent and use just the tarp in a one person camp & survival situation. I'll have to practice setting this one up a few times before hitting a backpack trail for a weekend.
One of the things I like about Lonnie's videos is that they show experience in the field. I have seen so many videos where people say things that make me go "wha...? Things like "If I had tie outs in the middle I could..." and here Lonnie shows a marble (I use pebbles) to tie anywhere you want.
i have a lot of respect for the way you convey a lot of information in such an easy to follow way. and you kept things on the inexpensive side instead of buying a bunch of fancy equipment.
Gino Foogle as compared to a similarly sized single wall tent made out of the same fabric, this tarp setup is going to be a bit heavier. There’s a fair amount of doubled over fabric, and the size of the interior is basically single person. So compare it to a single person trekking pole shelter, and that’s gonna weigh in at.. 1-1.5 kilos depending on the fabric and price. Significantly less for single wall cuben fiber zpacks stuff. And this is a big tarp, I think I heard him say 12 foot (360 cm) although it looked more like a 400 square to me. In this heavier fabric, that’s gonna be around the 1-1.5 kilos as well. But it’s super versatile, of course. That’s really the draw here. (PS: tarp fabric is not gonna be as waterproof as a typical tent bathtub floor fabric, either.)
This is exactly what I have been looking for. I solo hike with a hammock to sleep in. And sometimes you just can't find the right set of trees. I always carry a tarp to put up a simple A over my hammock or a wind break. I had no idea how to make a floored shelter out of it.with this I can expand my campsite options. Thank you so much. I'm going to go practice this set up in the yard. Don't want to struggle on the trail.

I found that you need to make sure that the edge of the floor is tipped up inside the wall where the rain is dripping. After that it was very dry except for the slightest bit of condensation.

First off, thank you for making this video. Great info .👍👍👍 For the record: Pack 2 items. 1) a sheet of plastic (12x12) is what I've used for 50 years. 2) cordage... With the use of Pebbles or such items and stick(s) (marbles are extra weight), you now can construct any of the many tents seen online, and a sheet of plastic is not expensive.
When he explained how to make the loop to tighten the corner, all i could think of was: welcome to the world of hairbands and ponytails! you made the initiate grade!
Thank you for this idea. I might take a Crack at it next week when we go camping. I like to purposefully leave a random piece of 'crucial' equipment when we camp. Just to get used to improvising on the fly. Think I'll "forget" my tent this time.
+Stray Stroop That is an interesting practice to leave a critical piece of equipment behind. So many outdoor enthusiests believe that they can make do in almost any circumstance but it can be a real eye opener to actually experience first hand those same circumstances. We often times do not fully realise the situation until we actually are in it.

Very interesting. I've been mulling over a camping lifestyle for a while now and used a tarp on the beach with stakes, boating cord, and tied to a couple of trees instead of an umbrella and it worked great. The cops thought I was camping but when I explained it they said well.... ummmm, ok. Lol. What I'm surprised at is why no one ever mentioned it to me even though they are experienced campers. Anyway, it is amazing to me to save so much money using a tarp and its so much easier to carry rolled up and no big investment. Thanks a lot for taking the time Sir to share your knowledge and expertise!
be a great day shelter. id go with a second small tarp for the floor. id fear waking up damp through with damp kit with the ventilation and run off issue. im yet to do a wild camp. thanks for the marble/smooth stone tip. and how to loop it. I like that and learning from you. cheers
This is a true tarp shelter, tight, won't let wind and rain in, good job. Some videos I've seen have gaps and don't cover all sides and they call it a shelter.

Nice video ,Knot used for your marble is called medical knot, I always find a problem with canvas tarps that if you touch them from inside while is raining they straight away start losing waterproof qualities ,in this case having enough head room would do the trick . Thanks

That's fine, while a marble is ideal you could really use anything to make that tie off point; a little river rock, a cap from a plastic water bottle. Heck, even a little wad of moss would work, it'd just be a little more cumbersome to work with. The main thing to avoid are objects with sharp points or edges which could tare the tarp.
Scouting Free Yes it should work okay with a 3 X 3 meter tarp. If you watch the video in the link that wa placed in my video, that is the size tarp he uses. A 10 Foot by 10 foot

This tent would take a really large tarp to cover two camp cots (just kidding.) This taller floored tent for bigger guys is really cool with the indispensable marbles.You are another genius like ReallyBigMonkey1. 09:50 : 12 x 12 (I assume is measured in foot). For those of you lazy to google, that's just bigger than 3.5m x 3.5m. It feels kind large (and likely heavy) to have packed into your camping kit? Yes 12 X 12 feet. Compared to almost all tents, this tarp is quite light and compact. However one could go even lighter and more compact by using a tarp made of Silnylon.
Can't wait to use this for my wilderness survival merit badge! Me and a buddy are only allowed to have a tarp, pocket knife and water and were sleeping in the woods at a boyscout camp. Thanks for teaching this.
Thank you! Unfortunately we weren't allowed to use the tarp for anything else but to sleep on, so we had to build a shelter out of sticks and fallen branches etc. It was a good experience for the most part, although sleeping on rocks in a temperature of about 40ºF without a sleeping bag or pillow was definitely something I wouldn't want to repeat.

Thanks Lonnie. Your channel is one of the best for showing how to do more with less. Have always preferred the techniques of the old " long hunters ", and " voyageurs " who could spend an indefinite time in the wilderness with only a couple of simple hand tools and their highly honed bush craft skills .... I'm too cheap to buy and carry marbles into the wild, so I pick up half a dozen smooth river rocks and use them the same way. Cool tent Lonnie, and thanks for the tutorial.
