@@makeitwithalex4483 You’re welcome! I’ll be trying to make these for my son, my sister and me. 😄 I just want to ask how many yarns of the gold Bernat Blanket did you end up using for the super chonky bee? I wanted to make the pink one but sadly the yarn is only sold in Australia. Btw I’m an absolute beginner. 😃
@@kathleendeleon1808 I used just ball of yarn for the biggest one. I think it was a 200 gsm ball. There are so many variations you can make with different colors, so you could easily make a blue bee or different colour combo. All the best, I’d love to see a pic if you make it :) and feel free to message me if you get stuck at all
@@makeitwithalex4483 Thank you for the reply and for the suggestion! 😄 Last question, sorry I forgot to ask. What sizes of safety eyes did you use for both the biggest and the pink one? Thanks again. Wish me luck! 😁🤞🏼
After I watched the whole video I decided that it was simple enough for me to try it only with the pattern, and I have to say. Wow, your pdf pattern was so nice, easy to read, the aesthetic was sooo pretty and colorful. Thank you so much for teaching us all ❤️❤️
Hey I literally started to crochet a few days ago and your videos are so newbie friendly and wholesome can't wait to attempt my bee ... also I'm in love with piglet 💙
Hey there. You are so welcome! I am happy you are giving crocheting a go, it's such a fun past time. Thanks for liking Piglet too... she is a little bundle of mischief but oh so loveable :)
Yay! Thank you! So happy to have you here. I have been concentrating on a some Twenty One pIlots content but will get back to crochet and craft soon :)
Awwwww, thanks so much. I am such a fan of yours and I can’t wait to get stuck into some serious projects. Thanks again for your feedback, it means a lot
@@SkeinSpider thanks again. Your patterns are fantastic and I think your channel is one of the best presented I have seen. Your patterns are gorgeous and easy to follow. Topped off by the fact that you are another Aussie... well done you. I am understanding the work that goes into making tutorials and applaud you for your work. This is a super easy pattern but I can’t wait to dive into the more complex pattern designs I create. It’s so nice to have such positive feedback from someone like minded. Sincerely ‘thank you’ x
I just wanted to let you know that I made a huge bee! She is made from chunky chenille (I found a place that sold porta craft blanket chenille nearby) and sits at almost 40cm long and I love her so much! So soft and squishy :D Thanks so much for the video, it really helped!
I am fully determined to make the chonky bee with little to no crochet experience.... Hope it turns out well, but I have the confidence now, seeing this tutorial!! 😊

Fantastic! This was very easy! I was able to make the small be in 1 hour! Alex you are so helpful! can you make a video of how to make, a pot holder!? Thank you!
To create the giant bee in this video do you just follow this pattern and use Bernat blanket yarn? Because in your description it says you have 4 bee tutorials in sizes 28st, 36st, 48st, and 60st, but I can't seem to find them. Can you post a link to them? Also when changing color did you do a slip stitch first with the new color and then a single crochet? Because that is what it looks like.
Hi! I love these bees! I was wondering tho, how many balls of the burnt mustard (yellow) Bernate yarn did you use, for the super jumbo boi ? Thank you!
Zainab thanks for your comment. The bees are both made using the same pattern, the large bee is made using a yarn called Bernat Blanket yarn which is a chunky chenille yarn so it makes the bee a heap bigger than the pink yarn. You can also make your bee bigger by using two strands of yarn. Also, I love the idea of a Chonky parrot... thanks for your suggestion :)
Hello! Thank you for your tutoring. I think there are some missing page in the pdf file. It doesn’t show how to make the antenna and how to finish the bee.
Giang thank so much for letting me know. It is all fixed now... the pdf should include the antennae, but let me know if you are having any issues with it. thanks again :)
Hey there, welcome to crocheting, ‘sc’ means single crochet, so if the pattern says 2sc you create 2 single crochets. The number in the brackets eg. [12] is the total. U, eg of stitches at the end of that row or round. I hope that helps, and feel free to ask questions as it’s the way we learn :)

Hi Alex! I'm wanting to make the Big Boi for my best friend as a graduation present, but I'm wanting to make it in double stranded Aran weight yarn. How much yarn would you reckon I'd need? Or is double stranding in ami not recommended?
Hi there. The Big Boi using double yarn should work. Some yarns can start the bee's nose a bit cone shaped and this doubling up may do that. If that is the case, instead of starting with increases of 6 stitches per round you could do the following - Round 1: 8sc, Round 2: 8increases (16), Round 3: (sc, inc)x8 (24) and the pick up with Round 5 of the tutorial. First try the 6sc increases like the tutorial though as it might work. Good luck and comment if you need any further help :)
I'm wanting to make the Mega Chonky Bee but unsure about the stitch count is there someplace where I could find it??? Would greatly appreciate it my grand baby wants me to make her one. Thanks and I love your channel...Geegee
hi i really want to do this but I'm confused, do you crochet into the transition slip stitches or just skip over it every round? Cause wouldn't you end up with too many stitches?
hi. sorry for any confusion, you crochet into the same stitch space that you transitioned/slip stitched to. This keeps the same number of stitches per round.
I love your chonky bee soooo much! I really want to make it! Just wondering, is the bee you made in this video with the largest bee pattern(you know the biggest fattest yellow bee in the left corner called piglet)? I really want to make the biggest yellow bee (piglet) in your video but I’m not sure if you were doing it in the video as the bee you made was much smaller than piglet. Or did you do the piglet pattern but your bee turned out smaller because of your yarn size being smaller?
Hi there. Thanks so much for your comment... it's really easy to answer. The 'Chonky' golden bee is made using the EXACT same pattern as the tutorial, just a thicker yarn (Bernat Blanket) and a larger hook to suit that yarn. I had a little laugh as 'Piglet' is the name of my little dog at the end of the video (not the bee). As a dog lover I have included Piglet at the end of a few of my videos as she love anything I crochet. Happy to answer any more questions if you have them. Have fun making your bee and thanks again :)
Make it with Alex thanks so much for telling me! 😁Ahhh so that’s piglet! I thought the bee was named piglet haha! But the actual piglet is super cute! 🥰

Can u show how to make the bigger bee?????’ The biggest one cause I am kinda obsessed 😍 My sister has a stuffed animal it was supposed to be friends with but it turned out bigger than it!!!!! LOL Oh nvm I saw y comment this to someone else and I am using the bernat blanket yarn so no wonder it turned out so big!
Hey, thanks for your comment. If you use the Bernat blanket yarn or a similar chunky yarn you will get the massive bee! Also I have a video on how to make a massive ‘watermelon bee’ which you might like. Have fun :)

@@laurisdang2376 it’s because the yarn is thicker... you can double the yarn to make it thicker if you want a ‘Chonky’ bee and you can’t get chenille yarn like the Bernat Blanket. The stitches and rows are exactly the same as in my tutorial. Hope that helps
you are very welcome. if you watch the video it will give you all the info you need for the biggest bee. basically it is the exact same pattern and tutorial, just thicker yarn and bigger hook. hope that helps :)
Hi there. You don’t have to use a magic ring, however it will give you the best finish if you can. I have heaps more adorable patterns to upload, including a range of bees. the first 5 rows will curve up and not sit quite flat, but if yours is looking different let me know what is happening and I will try my best to help you out with it. Alex :)
@@marielarivera2667 not sure why it will have ‘curled up’. What type of yarn are you using? And what size hook? I will see if I can’t work out what might have gone wrong
Hi. It is the same as the Bernat Blanket Yarn - If you check in the description there is a list of alternative yarns that will give you a similar result :)
When you’re doing the slip stitch in the first stitch in the back loop, is that counting as your first single crochet for the row? When I slip stitch and then single crochet into the same stitch I’m getting an extra number of stitches, sorry I’m new to amigurumi.
Same question but I haven’t figured it out just yet. So the first stitch into just the back loop, does that count as your 1st stitch of the next row? Or do we move on to the next stitch to do a single crochet under both loops and call that one the 1st stitch of the next row ?
Hi there Maci. The jumbo one is exactly the same pattern just using a thicker yarn (Bernat Blanket or similar) and a larger hook to suit the yarn you are using. Hope that helps :)
Hi! I really want to do this project, but I'm struggling with the amount of yarn that I need! The soft velveteen yarn I want to use is too thin for the big boi, so I'd have to double strand it to get the chunky-ness. How do I double strand it, and how would this affect the length of yarn I'd need?
Chelsea, hi. Yes, you can double stand it for sure. You will need double the yarn though. I found the best way to do this is to use 2 balls of yarn and bring the yarn tail out from the middle of each ball so they don’t keep spinning around and tangle up. You may have to experiment with the hook size to get it right so the fibre fill doesn’t show through your filling. I don’t know how much yarn you’ll need as it really depends on the brand and type, but you can also add normal acrylic yarn to bulk it up if you need to. Hope it goes well and you have fun making it :)
@@makeitwithalex4483 One more question! I've managed to find some chunky chenille yarn (so hard to find in Australia), but it'll be too short for the giant bee. How do you recommend joining two different balls of chunky yarn together? Is there a way to do it without ending up with a knot in the yarn?
Whoops. Answered my own question lol. I can just treat the new strand as a colour change and work it in that way! Being awake at 1am really messes with me (>~
@@chelsea6762 hey, I sympathise, I’m in Australia and chunky chenille is tricky to find. I suggest Spotlight have bargain bags for $10 (sometimes $6 on special) and they often have chenille which I grab when I see it. Also, just join your yarn (with a knot if you like) at the back of your project so you don’t see the knot when it is stuffed… easy peasy. And I was also awake at 1am crocheting LOL… the perfect thing to do during lockdown ;)
Hello ! I am using this pattern and am enjoying it! i am a little confused tho because in the document it says crochet R11-13 is the stripe colour but in the video R11-13 is crocheted with the main body colour while the first stripe starts at R14-16. Can you clarify this ? Thanks !!
Hi. I have just checked... and YES, you are correct. The video tutorial and pattern is correct. I am sorry for any confusion and appreciate your question. I will correct the written pattern as soon as I can. Thanks again for letting me know :)
Hi there. I used just one skein of the Bernat blanket yarn for the gold and one for the black, with quite a bit still left over. I think the skein was 200gms. Hope that helps :)
Hi there. I am in Australia and it’s difficult to get the Bernat Blanket yarn in Australia. I have to buy it online through craftonline or the USA yarns (or similar). On eBay there is a similar yarn called Porta Craft Blanket Chenille... I used that yarn for my ‘Watermelon Bee’ and my ‘Worm on a String’ if you want to check that option out. It’s really affordable yarn and comes in some fab colours too
@@dallascurtis9137 Dallas, G’day! Yes, I feel the pain... we Aussies don’t have much choice of yarn or crafting shops. Spotlight has the pink variegated yarn :)
@@dallascurtis9137 I’m from NSW, how about you? Also, that pink variegated yarn that’s at Spotlight comes in pale yellow, green, blue, pink, white, tan, and variegated pink - you could use two thicknesses of this yarn to get a much bigger bee. Also, sometimes they have the $10 bags of yarn that have a ‘Bernat Blanket style yarn’ in them
Hi. It really depends on the yarn you are using. Usually one ball of the black and one or two of the pink if you are using the ‘nippers’ yarn, or one ball of yarn if you are using the Bernat blanket yarn. If you are using something else I will try my best to help you with how much you may need
Hey Alex, I am new to crochet and I really want to make this. Would it be alright if I used two different size yarns? One requires a 8mm hook and the other requires a 6.5 mm hook. What hook size do you recommend I use? Thanks!
Hi there, and so happy you are crocheting! Are the two different yarns for the bee's body and stripes? OR for the bee's body and wings? If so, the yarn and hook can be different for the body and wings but if you have different yarn and hook size for the stripes it wont work at all as the body will gather in at the lighter yarn... if you can let me know more details I will be able to advise you better - yarn type, what color, etc. Alex :)
Thanks so much for the response! So I’m using the colors yellow, black, and white (yellow and black for stripes and white for the wings). The yellow and white yarn use a 8mm hook and the black uses a 6.5mm hook. These yarns are from the Bernat brand.
@@artbymadi6152 Madi, the black and yellow yarns really do need to be same thickness to keep the bee's body a nice rounded shape. You could try using x2 strands held together of the thinner yarn... it 'may' work but it is a risk. Alternatively you could use the 2 yarns you have the same for the bee's body (yellow with white stripes) and make the wings in black, this would work ok :) hope that helps
just a suggestion, could you zoom into your hands a bit more please :) its quite hard to see what you're doing, especially with the multicolored yarn. thankss, it looks awesome love the pattern!
Tiara, hi and thanks for the feedback… I will try to do this more and I think the more recent videos are a bit better, but definitely really appreciate your feedback :)
Hi. It really depends on the yarn thickness and effect you are going for. The larger bee has approx. 25mm or 1" eye and the smaller one is a 12mm or 1/2" eye. Hope that helps :)
hey so i started making one and on my second round it starts rounding up and so many rounds later it’s halfway to a ball is there something i’m missing
hi. I am a little confused as to what you mean. so the front part of the bee (where you start) creates a half ball (the face area), if your face is looking like a half ball you are doing everything just perfectly. if not, comment again and I will try and help you with it :)
Hi there. I am using a velvet/chenille yarn which is thicker than a worsted weight yarn. To make the giant bee I used Bernat Blanket yarn. You can use any yarn for this pattern but the chunkier the yarn the bigger the bee. I hope that helps :)
Hi Alex! I'm reading through comments and it seems I have a similar problem to someone else. I am using Bernat baby blanket yarn (weight 6) and a 7mm hook. My bee is very cone-shaped and I do not know why or how to flatten it. It seems to start with the first couple rows being very "pointy". Is there any way you could help me with this?
Rachel, hi. I think it has something to do with tension, but what you can do is start your bee with 8 stitches in a Magic Ring instead of 6 for Round 1. Then for Round 2 increase in every stitch which will give you to 16 stitches (instead of 13). For Round 3 (sc, increase)x8 which will give you 24 stitches (instead of 18), then pick jump a round and go to Round 5 of the pattern which is (3sc, inc)x6 which will give you 30 stitches. That should fix the problem. Let me know how you go. Alex :)
@@makeitwithalex4483 Thank you for the tip I will definitely try it out. Do you think I am pulling my yarn too tight? Or maybe I should use a hook bigger than a 7mm? I don't want my stitches too loose and filling to poke out however.
@@rachelfakult7614 I think the yarn brand/type and even the different color ways have something to do with it. You can stretch the 'coning' out a little by hand, but I think the increased stitches will fix the problem. Keep the stitches tight, you are doing the right thing. If you used a different yarn chances are you might have a different result, so I believe you are doing an awesome job with the hook size and tension... you've got this :)
@@makeitwithalex4483 Thank you so much for your help! I tried starting with your adjusted rounds and it has made it much less cone-shaped and more round. It looks perfect!
Hi. not sure what a kettle is? but I would say I used 1 skein of Bernat yarn for the large one and 2 skeins for the pink one as it is a much finer yarn. What yarn are you thinking of using?
@@makeitwithalex4483 I don't really understand because I have to translate everything (I can't speak English) but maybe two white and two pink yarns are enough
Hi. I used 25mm (1inch) safety eyes from memory, but best to look at the yarn you are using and see how big the bee will be when finished. If you want larger eyes felt works really well as an alternative. My strawberry bee video shows you how. Enjoy

I’m wanting to get the right size yarn for my daughter. She wants to learn how to make this and it’s a Christmas gift. My daughter would love to see if you could do an axolotl.
YAY! And I have added Axolotl to my list :) If your daughter wants to make the large 'chonky' sized bee you will need 1 ball of the yellow/gold Bernat Blanket yarn (or similar) and one of the black, plus a smaller amount of white for the wings. I think the Bernat comes in 300gsm balls. You will need quite a bit of fibre fill though, this bee is hungry. One economical way of buying fill is to buy a cheap pillow or pack of 2 pillows. Hope that helps, and if there is any left over yarn your daughter could make the worm on a string (or snake) following my tutorial ^~^
hi there. the bigger bee uses the exact same pattern/tutorial it is just using a larger hook and chunkier yarn. if you look in the description below the video there is a list of yarns that I suggest you could use for the GIANT BEE - Bernat Blanket is a good example. this yarn is available at most craft shops like Joanns, Michaels, even Walmart I believe. the hook size (as with all Amigurumi) should be around 1 size smaller than recommended on the yarn label. I do say in the first couple of minutes in the video what yarn and hook size I use if that helps. have fun :)
