Brass locks are difficult due to their material, but still possible. I've done this modification to dozens of locks: round shackle locks, trailer hockey puck locks, solid steel locks, and laminated locks like shown in the video. Your first will take you 30-45 minutes but after you do one or two you can get this down to 10-15minutes per lock.

Back in the 90s I had two mazdas they had keys that were cut symmetric on top and bottom. They make it that way so you can stick the key in upside down and it will still work. I had a new key made where the top matched one car lock and the bottom matched the other. Now one key worked for both cars, just had to flip it if it didnt work the first try.

I can't remember, it wasn't my original idea to take credit for is all. I definitely read about it from someone else doing it on a Miata forum. And it couldn't have been more recent than 2003 because I changed jobs then and changed cars. I know your question is because you figure there were no online forums in the 90s. And I cant point you to any, but I'm sure I read about it online. You're welcome to do the research yourself if you like.

Before reassembly.. drill a small half depth starter hole in the bottom plate mounting holes. Drill down to only half thickness of the bottom plate. This will allow the clamping pins to stand proud when bottom plate is reinstalled. The pins can now be replannished with a hammer and diy punch anvil. The anvil can be made by drilling a 1/4 moon pocket in the business end of a round flat-faced punch the same dianeter as the original padlock clamping pin heads.Use a drill bit the same diameter of the original clamping pin 'rivet 'head when drilling the 1/4 moon in the punch. Support the padlock in a vice with the closed shackle between and parallel with the vice jaws before using hammer and punch anvil. Use minimum vice jaw clamping pressure. This will produce a clean looking dome on your clamping pins

Put that grinder away! If you're starting with an open lock just remove the hex bolt in the shackle hole. The cylinder will come out of the bottom of the lock (on a rekeyable lock).

Excellent video. I have many locks around the farm and not enough pocket space for all the keys. in these times of "save the planet", "recycle/repurpose/reuse everything" it's very funny to me to listen to all the people saying just throw them away and buy new. buy 10 matching locks and when 1 fails just buy 10 more and toss the 9 good ones? seems silly although i've done it.

so most of the comments here are picking at this as useless and its so much easier to do this and why do it, well guys why watch it. i appreciate any knowledge i can gain anywhere, most of your comments are ridiculous anyway, of course you can go but a set of locks keyed alike, most of us older people have done it for years, me because i worked for a company and it was my job. but look closely, all of these locks are not the same, and the entire idea of most of the diy videos are for people that don't want to just throw something away, im afraid the new generation views life a lot different that some. if i can fix something i fix it and do not buy new. not just the money but some day our life may depend on it. i taught my kids and grand kids all their life, if you think you know everything then you leave no room for learning. quit bitching about videos you are not forced to watch and try to learn something. and never hesitate to throw hate at me, i thrive on it, when your speak your mind for over 60 years you get to where you almost need it.

While this will work, you greatly reduce the security and longevity of the lock. Because of the working nature of the lock, the more you file away, the greater the shear line, the more combination of keys that will work it, the easier it will be to pick, the more prone it will be to failure. This is an old locksmith fix, to make the key pins fit flush you just file the top of the plug flat. They've been doing it for about 70 years. But never that extreme, you should at least make sure you have the right pins. A flat spot on your plug that deep is a no no.
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 8 лет назад
Yes, but you yourself know how easy it is to pick these regardless to what has been done. I agree filing down into the plug will make it easier to pick with the increased shear line, but I have 15+ years of heavy use on outdoor locks I've done with no longevity issues. I try not to touch the plug if I can.

I have been buying duplicate keys at Lowes for a couple of years. They seem to bend easier nowadays and I have to replace them. Is there a stronger metal that can be used so the key will last longer.
@midas7934
@midas7934 3 года назад
Most should be made of brass, many are nickel plated, i know some are made of aluminum and those are garbage, im not sure what you get from lowes. If you really want a stronger metal you could ask a machinist to make you a key custom from stainless steel or tool steel, but youd have to pay a LOT of money for their work, which they possibly might not agree to do, might be some legal issue that would steer them for doing it. Brass should be adequate, brass is fairly strong, and thats what the internals of the lock is made of, having the key harder than the lock may wear the tumbler or pins prematurely. Plus brass is resistant to corrosion. Ace hardware i think carry good quality blanks, or maybe a local lock smith.

Not to mention a Brinks key that opens up several different Master locks! I happen to already be in that situation LOL! And another thing that really blew my mind was that I have some janitor keys (being that I work in that industry), that just so happened to unlock the door of my girlfriend's dad's cabin up north and also opens up her key access garage door opener LOL! Ever heard of the old saying...Don't put all of your eggs in one basket? That's logic, that works with anything, locks included and it was said for a good reason! Quick story. I'm on crutches, fishing way down hiking trail with a friend, at a metro park. One of dozens of parks. Ranger comes through on p.a. announces, please leave the park, gates locked in 5 minutes. On crutches I can't get out fast enough, now I'm locked in park. Staring at huge master lock on gate that looks like my tool box lock. Take out my tool box key.....bingo.....gate open, drive out and lock gate. Our huge group of friends had free reign of dozens of metro parks all night long for well over a year, before locks were changed. They all had the same lock!!!! Yahoo! Great video. After watching that, I feel I could do it pretty easy if I wanted to. Great tutorial! Thanks! Jpol.

I haven't had any HUGE issues with this lock yet! ru-vid.comUgkxfyHDlEqk6hqu9acdvK5NGzZsGKSokSbv It seems sturdy and like it will get the job done. I really like that it has a twisting lock feature to keep out dirt and debris. However, the mounting system is much too light for the lock, and continues to get loose/move around. It's mostly made of plastic parts, and I've had to tighten it a few times in the past week or so that I've had it. I'm worried that it's going to break off at some point while I'm riding. I'm considering just scrapping that part, but that would mean having to carry the heavy lock i my backpack and adding more weight. I wish I could have given this more stars, but without the mounting system, it's just another heavy lock that I have to cart around. UPDATE: Increased rating to 5 stars because the seller offered to provide a new lock and mounting system. Really appreciate the attention to customer service!!

John Dough Lol,that was going to be my reply also. It doesnt take anything to buy a set of four keyed identical. I worked for a school and we had about 20 locks all the same for the lawn mower maintenance sheds. That way the mower repair guy from the district would go and do what he had to. I remember going through all the keys on my key set and eliminating half of them that didnt go to anything anymore. I worked at a hotel and we had a key making machine,back then people kept their room key as a souvenir. It was madning. Some mondays I would cut 30 new keys. It was easy to change the keys. All you had to do was remove one tumbler and switch it with another,then make the new key by changing the pattern. It only took a minute to change them over. I learned all about the different types of tumblers,springs,and keys. I even ordered different blanks so I could make a key for any door,even car keys.( which I did lots of times). Our Master locks for our electrical boxes were all keyed the same thanks to me.

I weld them shut,.......and slipknot a hanky through them,.......and use them as Monkey's knuckles. My key to locks is the smallest blade in an Old-Timer stock-man Knife. You just wiggle and turn. Remember he showed you in front of the key it opens your lock. So your blade bypass's the key way and just opens the lock. You want the 3 1/2 inch stock-man or a thin piece of metal long enough to reach the release button in front of the lock cylinder. That works on most cheap lock's.

and, if you take a blank M1 Master key, you can shim the lock and get it to turn, then tap the plug out (barely) and then use a follower to push the rest of the plug out without having to drill out the top of the bible, the part that holds the top driver pins and pin springs.

ya know, you can re-key alot of different types of locks. but these aren't meant to be. fyi: the top "tumbler" is called a driver pin and the bottom that touches the key is the "key pin". You can make shit happen, I can respect that. go get a little lock knowledge and apply that knowledge :)

Great idea unless you lose the key. You could take your chances and hope no one finds the lost key or have to re-key all the locks again. Otherwise this is a great use of old junk locks. Just so people know they do sell loose pins and kits online if you do lose or damage the pins.

They are Pins,not tumblers. Tumblers are in wafer locks.......
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 3 года назад
Those are called wafer tumblers. These are called pin tumblers. Tumblers are what they are. The other word is the type of tumbler ie pin, wafer, etc.

Unfortunate someone is teaching people to bastardize locks. There is a correct way to do this.
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 6 лет назад
"Correct Way" is up to debate if you end with the same results. Putting in new pin tumblers that are sized at a giant factory vs resizing the pin tumblers myself I guess is basterdizing. I open and do this to locks that no other person nor locksmith ever attempts. Find a locksmith that will rekey a laminated lock "properly"....... You won't because they won't.

I guess it comes down to how much is your time worth. Unless you wanna just have fun toying with it but those locks are not going to be as secure as they were even though they are not secure to begin with.
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 5 лет назад
Of course it's just for fun and I am fully aware how easily these locks are bypassed even when they come off the shelf. This is merely to make my like easier and have a single key for many locks.

If you have the key to the lock before you take it apart you don't need to grind the top of the bible to get the cylinder and pins out.
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 8 лет назад
True. I've used a barrel chaser in these situations, but I feel it's just as easy to grind off the top and stake it.

sixtyfiveford when you see a lovers bridge with 2000 padlocks.. all locks are large and theres no keys... ottawa needed to sandblast and repaint the bridge and put a note in radio and newspaper for everybody to go get there locks if they have a spare key.. if not.. every lock is getting a angle grinder and the bridge was sandblasted and repainted black

Good video. I've done similar. By the way, what you are calling tumblers are actually pins. Tumblers are uses in a different type of lock.
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 3 года назад
Lazy lock people call them pins. Technically they are just Tumblers. Pin being the type of Tumbler they are. You can have wafer tumblers, pin tumblers, etc. Calling them simply pins in describing the parts a lock leaves a lot to be desired because there are other items inside of a lock that could be described as pins.

@@sixtyfiveford Hey thanks for the info. I didn't know that they are tumblers, I thought tumblers were the wafer/disk type only. Glad you corrected me.

Thanks for the video {and others}. I found several Master padlocks around the house, and some of them I cleverly rubbed off the number. Now I don't have to pay for someone to build a key from the number. I'll just do what you did. Thanks again.

@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 3 года назад
Tumblers are what they are called. There are pin tumblers, wafer tumblers, etc or any other style of tumbler. "Pin" simply refers to the type of tumbler they are. So simply calling them pins or key pins is ignorant.
