Make an A-Frame Level to Install Swales

Installing swales to control water flow is an important component of permaculture, though on a suburban plot it may not be critical. It all depends on water your property is like and how water flows across it.
To install them, however, you need to make sure they are on contour -- or level with the slope of the property -- and to do so you can use an A-frame level.
In this video, I show you how to easily build an A-frame level, calibrate it, and then how to use it in the field...or your yard.

Easy instructions, thank you sir. I am thinking of using welded metal tubes for making the A-Frame since I have to use it at several farms and want it to last a long time too. I have tubes lying around. I hope I can find a level small enough to be put in the middle frame, the kind found on tall camera tripod.

Is it better to have a narrow A or one with its feet farther apart?

I don't think it really matters. Probably one that is of a comfortable size would be best for you. Legs further apart means less spots to mark; closer together gives more "precision," but is that really necessary for ground we'll end up likely hand digging anyway, or even over extended distances? I don't think so. Like horseshoes and grenades, getting close is good enough. :)

Instead of the Plumb Bob, why don't you fit a spirit level in place of the cross bar

That would work. But everyone has a piece of string and a small heavy object laying around. Dedicating a level to the A frame might be a bit much, tho zip ties holding it in place would work too
