Thanks again, Steve, for another bright spot in my day. I don't cut the handle off the paint stick. It gives me a place to note the grit, 120, 220, etc.

I think I have a 1x2 scrap - I'm going to make one of these, tonight. If the bears don't get me. Bears have decided we have a nice neighborhood. Hopefully I can deter them with power tool noise. Wish me luck!

As a scroll saw user I would recommend starting with masking tape over the board before glueing the template on. After cutting the template out you can peel the tape and template off without any residue of problems. No heat gun required.

I was wondering if you would be able to talk about a bit about Brad nailers vs. pin nailers. What their intended uses are. As well as cordless vs. compressor. (I'm in the midst of making the writing desk you made so my son has place for books for his online classes. And although I could use clamps, for the banding a nailer would be much easier.) Thanks for getting me in to woodworking! Keep the videos coming! They keep us somewhat sane!

Thanks for tutorial. I teach a middle school woodshop class and the kids love making these. I have them layout the measurements, so it's a bit challenging, but they love the finished product. You make great videos. I really like how you show all the details and provide a template for this one.

thanks Steve - got back into woodworking recently and made one of these for the fun of it. fit the pieces tight and sanded down the outsides, rounded off the edges and tight when put together. good little 2 hour project for us mere mortals.

I made like 25 of these as Christmas gifts for my students a few years ago. They were stumped for a while!

To solve the problem of getting the pattern off the blocks, but a layer of masking tape down first and then use the spray adhesive. Just peels off nicely. Not my idea. I've seen it used countless times before.

Thank you for another uplifting video, Steve. This looks like a fun project almost anyone can attempt, even with only a jigsaw. I hope you're enjoying making these videos as much as we are watching them, and don't feel obliged to keep up the pace if you feel like a break. I'd like to think what we can do in return. Ahh the good old High school wood shop project. I think i still have mine.

There's a similar puzzle but with 6 pieces. My dad liked it so much he made some out of 4"X4"X24" pieces and gave them out as gifts.

Steve, one thing we do in the scroll saw universe that may translate is blue tape between the template and the stock. makes removal very easy!

Thanks Steve. I tried to make this puzzle several years ago and gave up. I made the mistake of using oak, making it hard to sand and then it split along the grain. This time I used Poplar. It was much easier. I used a scroll saw with a sharp blade.

Those openings on the COG puzzle would be a snap with a mortising tool. Some are just a bit that works with a drill press. But they also make dedicated stand-alone mortising tools.

I'm definitely gonna need more time with my jigsaw before I'm able to make cuts as clean as you demonstrated here!

You could do the cutting with a scroll saw as well, if you don't own a jigsaw (like me...). Tried it on mine and worked perfectly!

You can use blue tape before putting on the template and it will come off very easy once you are finished cutting it out.

When I need to apply a pattern to wood I apply planters tape on the stock then using spray adhesive to the tape apply the pattern! It is Easy to remove too! Thanks for sharing the pattern Steve! 😁🛫

Man, i love these puzzle videos! I just finished this one and also did the magical bolt one. It's really helping me get through the town lockdown. It's also helping me use up some of my small scrap pieces of wood that in reality would be otherwise useless

If you don't have spray adhesive, I found that a little wood glue made some sturdy sanding sticks. You just have to wait a few hours.

Making some and sending them to friends with kids during this shelter-at-home time.

Hey Steve, a channel recommendation. Grandpa Amu. He's an elderly craftsman in China who makes incredible things with very (VERY) basic tools. Mostly wood and bamboo from what I've seen.

I can recall Norm Abram frequently using a square hole chisel for making mortises for tenons. Would that work well for making the inner cavities for these parts?

I remember seeing one of Adam Savage's videos where he said he used to make sanding sticks by hand, until he found out he could buy emery boards (nail files) in a variety of grits. I feel like I'm overthinking it wondering which option is more economical on time and cost of materials.

Cover the wood in painter’s tape, and glue the pattern to the tape. Then it peels off easily.
