Fun fun fun! Today I'm going to show you how to make colorful rainbow waffle bath bombs. And a trick to making several small batches of different colors at once without them drying out!
RECIPE
Make a big batch of dry mix. 500 grams baking soda, 200 grams citric acid, & 60 grams corn starch. Sieve dry ingredients together & mix everything together. Divide it; each bowl/color gets 95 grams (makes about 7colors). Each bowl: 1/4 cup (62.5 grams) baking soda, 1/8 cup (25 grams) citric acid, 1 tablespoon (7.5 grams) corn starch. [Optional] You can also add a tiny bit [1/16 - 1/32 teaspoon] of SLSa (Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate) to some colors to slightly vary reactions in the water.
WET (for each batch/color): 2 milliliters fragrance oil, 1 milliliter polysorbate 80, 1.5 milliliters carrier oil, 1.5 milliliters water (or liquid color). Mix wet ingredients then add it to dry slowly while whisking. Thoroughly mix & knead each batch. Each batch starts drying after it's mixed. To slow drying, stack or cover bowls whenever possible & work as fast as you can throughout the entire process. *If you are inexperienced or work slowly, consider making a fraction of the recipe & perhaps 3 colors at a time. When choosing color combinations, be mindful of what color it will make the water. If you combine complimentary colors (colors opposite each other on the color wheel), use one of them very sparingly. If you add equal amounts, the water will be brown & muddy looking. If you're unsure, simply choose colors from the same family. They look great on bath bombs + make gorgeous water, too. Fill the mold with mix & pack it well. Do this until it's very full & packed well. Take the back of the other mold & make the top as flat as possible, grinding & packing the mix more. Flip it over & tap the mold. Then lift it up & continue tapping until the bomb is released. Dry 24 hours.
Sparkling decorative patterns: 3 milliliters 99% isopropyl alcohol, .5 milliliters polysorbate 80, & 1/4 teaspoon mica (gold dust mica looks great on everything). Drop it with a spoon, splatter it with a paint brush, or drizzle it with a pipette… Use a precision tip applicator (linked below) for great control. Practice designs on ugliest bombs first. Make sure the design is fully dry; this should take no more than an hour (I just left mine on the table overnight).
Bombs will last a year, but are best fresh as they lose effervescence over time.
