A look into how I create these lovely blocks from my workshop waste that I then take home and burn on my Log burner.
One bag of shavings from my dust collection bag makes approximately 120 blocks. I also throw in tea bags, used coffee grinds and the coffee from the pods too.
At a quick speed I can make 30 briquettes in 30 minutes. What others don't share is the best way to dry them. I only handle them one time before they dry. This saves time and money.
And there's the fact that I don't have to take my waste to a waste site. I even give my ashes from our log burner to a Potter who filters it down and uses it as a period glaze on his pottery artworks. #briquettes

I used to make these using dry grass and leaves too in the mix of 50/50 wood shavings and paper mashe. I made a press bolted inside my garage in it used a farm jack to press down, things would dry in a week it pressed that well. I used to dip the dry blocks into an a tray of old cooking oil so it would soak in and burn great.

Great idea, nice and simple. If I may make 2 suggestions… rather than shortening the legs of the press why not make a small cart with good pivotal wheels (not cheap castors) that are both load bearing and non binding for the bucket and raise the bucket 50-100mm. The platform of the cart could have small batons fitted on each side to prevent the bucket from moving and you could always fit a drain plug to the bottom of the bucket as it would be high enough off the ground in case you ever need to fully drain it without making a mess. Wheels would certainly help move the cart and bucket around and prevent wear and tear plus a short rope or chain to act as a handle attached with a simple washer and bolt system costs pennies. That way you have both manoeuvrability and still the ability to use your entire body weight as a means to press. Would also save your back too. Second suggestion would be a stainless steel sweet/coffee bean scoop instead of the Tupperware container for ease of loading, this could also be drilled out for additional drainage when scooping. Just my thoughts but again… fantastic and simple idea that clearly works as is.
@twcmaker
@twcmaker 2 года назад
Love this.. A platform for the press and the bucket is a great idea. If I used locking castors then I could leave the back legs on the cart and the front on the floor. I don't feel the need for a drain. I've done over 9000 of these blocks and I just use up the water by not adding more water.
@twcmaker
@twcmaker 2 года назад
And the containers are old ones that have been used for other things. They were single use plastics for takeaways, then I use them for polishing or other things. Then just before throwing them away I use them for this purpose. I love your ideas. Thank you. Jamie

Each brick can burn away from 30 minutes to and hour depending on the wood. I dont remove the water. I just don't top up the bucket (every 60 blocks or so) and keep adding sawdust. I can get it so that the last water is for the last block. Then clean the bucket out in the sink. It's only sawdust and fine down the drain.

Hi, thanks for sharing your knowledge and production process, really helpful. Personally i dont have access to large quantities of wood shavings or sawdust, but even buying them i think would be more eco friendly and cost effective than buying the commercially made briquettes, dont know if its already been suggested but would a small dehumidifier speed up the drying process, then you could re-use the liquid to mix more briquettes. i know there would be the cost of powering this but the increased production may offset the cost. just a thought. keep up the great work.
@twcmaker
@twcmaker 2 года назад
Hi Harry. You've hit the nail on the head. I'd thought of this but never really tried. If the storage rack was curtained off and then the front part of a dehumidifier breathing in all of the moisture. With the back part facing into the workshop. The heat from the dehumidifier would help keep the workshop warm 👌👌👍

Good day, Jamie. Thank you so much for sharing this. My aunt wants to know what the proportions are for sawdust, tea leaves and coffee grounds in your briquette mix. I told her it doesn't have to be perfect but she is still insisting on getting the "recipe" even after she watched this video. If you could just give me a rough guide that I can send her. She lives in the rural areas and there's a lot of tea plantations near them.

I wonder if a homemade press (Hydraulic jack in a frame) would be better for compressing and at the same time de-watering the "cakes" for a faster drying time. It may also introduce a more "wood log" type of burn.

It might be. The lever is 9:1 so if I put most of my weight on it (I'm 76kg /176lbs) say 60kg. That would be over 500 kg of pressure. I think 🤔

Atta boy Jamie.. Great new video, takes a bit of practice to look at the camera instead of the monitor eh.. On your press: Try to find a way to lengthen the rear legs (adding a wood extensions it they're tubular steel). The handle is already a bit low for your body without shortening the front legs. I would even consider adding an extension to it with an upward angle for better ergonomics and leverage... Cheers!

I am sure I have seen the video of the guy who makes the press you have (3 different versions if I remember rightly). He used paper for his and made them compressed enough to throw round his garden without breaking! Obviously this is a different material. I tried to make my own briquettes and had some sauces, but found when burning them there was a Lot of ash! It will be interesting to see yours burn! Recycling the recycled ...... That is the way to go!
@twcmaker
@twcmaker 2 года назад
Yes that's the guy. I don't get what's so important about throwing them. I'm careful with mine. Once they're dry they can either be flakey or quite solid. Depending on the amount of very fine dust. The coffee ones are very solid.
@totherarf

@@twcmaker I think the throwing bit was just to show the level it had compressed down to. It has an effect on drying time and I suspect density of the finished briquette.

This is so cool! How clean do the briquettes burn? Is the bucket of pulp really smelly? I think that's what I would be most concerned with if I did this in my home
@twcmaker
@twcmaker 2 года назад
It is cool thank you. They burn really clean as once they go home, they sit by the side of the log burner and dry out even more. No it's not normally smelly unless it's left a few few weeks/months. Then if it does, I put extra saw dust over the top. If I did it at home, I would do it in a garage or shed. Hope that helps 👍 Have you subscribed? As I'll be done more videos on these very soon. I gotta figure something out like this. I would want more log sized bricks and maybe more compressed but as of right now I just burn all my dust in the back yard and that takes a day or two. I use some of the dust for compost but you can only add so much so its mostly all burnt and it'd be nice to have the bricks for the winter. Ive read that a compressed enough brick can burn longer than oak.

Thanks for this video I'm really impressed with the set up it's brilliantly clever. I was just wondering though, what if you had a vice like mechanism that screws downeards, you might get additional pressure which could make them dryer more compact and maybe burn longer I don't know.
@twcmaker
@twcmaker 2 года назад
I like the way you're thinking. A wet /squeezed briquette weighs approx 330grams. Three weeks later it weighs 110-120 grams. That's a lot of water to dry. To speed up the drying process it would either have to be during or after the briquette is made. I put the briquettes under the paving blocks to keep the pressure on. If I tried to squeeze more out I think I would need an artificial drying method to take advantage of the extra pressure. This process is quite quick and natural at the moment. I'd like to keep it that way, so that the students would still be able to do it. I'm going to give your comment more thought. Thank you

It takes a special type of burner to burn sawdust. It gets everywhere when you move it around or just open the bag. And sawdust doesn't burn with any intensity. It's a slow burn that can easily go out without completely burning.

Adding very dry sawdust to an existing fire can be dangerous. If conditions are right, it can cause a flash fire and you could be burned. I found that out the hard way when I was in high school. I put a shovel full of sawdust in the stove in my dads garage and it flashed on me and burned my hair and eyebrows.

You've asked this question when I'm in the middle of trialing a 'Two bucket method' I'm 3-4 weeks in with my current bucket and started another bucket off two weeks ago. The longer you leave it, it comes more like compost and burns brighter, longer. So this I think is the way forward. I'm aiming for 4 weeks and start a new bucket (don't add anything into the new bucket once filled) Have you subscribed? New video out in a couple of weeks.

I know nothing in regards to what you are doing but I feel like you could really benefit from using more clamping force making your bricks. Hydraulics are too slow and expensive but if you used a jack screw of some description you might cram more fuel per unit and therefore more heat energy per brick all the while saving time and money. Think 18th century printing press scaled down to a unit that takes up 1/4 the space or roughly the footprint of your current setup. Just a thought for you, make good friends with a fabricator and you'd be set on whatever you need. Cheers 🥂
@twcmaker
@twcmaker Год назад
Thank you. Your feeling might not be quite right. If you squeeze too much out, then you have to allow for 'spring back'. Which means air gets inside (that's not good, as they burn quicker) unless you keep a constant pressure. I've changed the compression part of the process now. They need to dry under compression. So too much weight from above without something stopping them spread, and they would collapse. If they were in a mould and compressed they woukd take longer to dry out...unless I added heat. Then that's more energy to create them. That's not an option. Subscribe and there will be a new video out in a month or so. Now I'm only pressing down to about 70-80% pressure. And allowing liquid to stay in. That way as it dries out, it shrinks into itself and no air replaces the water.
@harveyhandbanana
@harveyhandbanana Год назад
I didn't think of the heat part that makes good sense. It sounds like you've got this down to a science at this point. My thought was like the energy logs we have in the states. Highly compressed sawdust with some kind of binding agent

I fyou want to speed up the process, then turn up the frequency of the making. We were making 30 on a Wednesday, 30 on Thursday. That drying rack is in two columns. Wed, Thurs. And there's three shelves for each day. So we fill the storage up like that. On the fourth week we first remove the (then dry) first weeks blocks. The frequency depends on suppy (shavings) & demand (fuel). I sometimes run out of shavings, so can't make any. And in the Winter I want more.

I wonder if you could add a bit of PVA glue to the slurry, like a cup of glue to a gallon of water? Might make the bricks harden up more? Thanks for the insight into what to do with the waste, and can't believe you found someone to take the ashes too! That's fantastic! Blessings and love from Upstate New York ❤️💛💚
