Even beginners can shorten curtain panels and make them hang like expensive drapes. In this easy tutorial, I'll show you how to make curtain panels fit your space and hang beautifully. We'll add hidden tabs behind the pocket casing to make the drapes hang in individual folds. So much nicer, and easy peasy!

i totally agree with not liking the puddling as well as preference for the clean stacking of the folds vs the scrunching sheered on the rod look. i've never understood the puddling on the floor. Just looks messy and difficult to keep clean.

The “lin hem” story is hilarious! I could totally see something like that happening to me, making curtains was my first ever sewing project too 😂

You mentioned just marking one panel and cutting the same amount off each panel. CAUTION!!!! I needed to shorten and hem some Ikea panels for my DIL and thank goodness I measured each panel from the top because one panel was about 4 inches longer than the other 3. What a disaster it would have been if it had been the bad luck to have picked out the longer panel to measure and I had cut the same off each panel based on that one. Three panels would have been too short. Always measure each panel because you can never be sure all panels are the exact same length.

That happened to me also, except that I cut and sewed it, not finding the issue until much too late!

Great suggestion to check the panels! I have some Ikea panels that I bought years ago and then decided to go with their Roman shades instead. Now that I have a new apartment, I'll check the length of all the panels before moving forward. Thank you!!!

I found this way of making curtains amazing, especially sewing on tabs & ifcurtain too long they can easily be adjusted!👏 I've subscribed! BUT REALLY WANTED TO SEE HOW THEY LOOKED ONCE HUNG🥴

I did mine in reverse. I had a nice crisp hem. so, I did the shortened from the top. Already had the round grommets on top. So, I cut the top off shortened the panel, and resewed the panel to the top strip sewing "in the ditch" where the top strip already had a seam under the grommets.

Brilliant! My husband hates the grommets, but grommet curtains seem to be easier to get on sale. I could actually eliminate the grommets!

Thank you so much for this (one more) very helpful video. I wish I had watched it four months ago when I made drapes for our bedroom windows! I used grommets, and grommets mean holes, and, of course, my first set of holes were incorrectly placed. Try fixing that when the holes are done! Your idea of adding loops behind the top would have made it easier to fix or adjust. Also cheaper than buying grommets. Live and learn. Let me take the opportunity to say that I loved your latest video on how you upcyled two sweaters. What you did with the second one (felting in colorful balloons) was magical and inspirational. You’re the best!

Thanks Catherine. I love the invisible loops. I don’t like the grommet type drapes but I don’t like the bunched curtain look for drapes either. I’m going to fix my drapes now!

(I’ll just use white muslin or wide grosgrain ribbon because don’t have extra length to cut off)

Instead of fabric loops, I use metal split rings to do the same things, as I find they run on the curtain rod more smoothly

Puddleing makes the curtain look fuller and richer. It also depends what material. Not all look good pooling on the floor.

Great tips, as always! I have the same issue I want to tackle now. Watching your video made me think of another option... Could I create big button holes that the rod would go through (much like how grommets function)? Of course that cuts a hole... But is that a workable option?? Working with a semi sheer fabric...

I've been a big thumbs down on the puddling all along. If you want your grommetted drapes to hang with the creases equidistant, thread a toilet paper roll on your bar between each grommet.
