Great video. I've been thinking about how I want to design a canister filter for my betta's tank, and in my head I was going to put the submersible pump inside the aquarium itself and have the canister inline with the output. I'm going to redesign that with the pump inside the canister instead, as you did. This way there's much less in the aquarium itself, and it looks cleaner. Also, to those wondering about the power supply and voltage regulator (blue chip with the numbers), you could easily do this more simply with a 5v cellphone charger (no longer adjustable), or by using a pump with variable flow dial. They did this so they can adjust the flow rate manually by changing how much power the pump is given.

This was an awesome vid. There are many bones one could pick, and they are true: if this leaks, it'll siphon the tank... The silicon will crack over time, I could just buy another type of filter for cheaper, etc., But I don't think those, legitimate as they may be, were the point of the video. This diy project crosses my line of diminishing returns too, by far! I don't have the electrical items, the drill and bit, nor the knowledge OR TIME, just lying around to make this efficient for ME. Nor am I a diy fanatic. But for the masses of people who do, this sharing is a creative idea. The possibilities are limitless. Even an Applied Science teacher would love this! Regardless of purpose or choice, this was super interesting. Thank you.

Additionally, most of the small/nano filters that can be commercially obtained/"PNP", do not provide the quality of filtration which can be manipulated in a DIY construction like this. In a DIY project like this, we can control the amount and type of physical media, carbon/charcoal as well as biological media as we see fit. Just the ceramic pieces he used, compared to any small Tetra, Eheim, Fluval, Aqueon (etc.) Internal or External HOB filter, will provide EXPONENTIALLY greater supporting beneficial bacteria colonies. Again, depends on your purpose, ...and if you have the resources...and necessity is the mother of ingenuity, right? And see, people are sharing links now and have offered insight beyond the education of this video. We might not have agreed with this DIY project nor been inspired to replicate it, but it has indeed triggered growth in our aquarium hobby and a dialogue. Not only is that a "win", but further evidence of a brilliant and influential video. Cheers! Now I'm gonna change water and maintain all my store bought filters haha. And maybe one day look back to this vid for inspiration. "Over and Out."

Yes, I totally agree with you, But, My place is only a small town. I cant buy the little filter for my fishtank.For that reason, I have to reuse everything I can find near where I live, Sometimes DYIng something will be more expensive than what we can buy. but it really is not crucial because DIY is also my interest.

Been building DIY aquarium safe filters and accessories for 38 years now. Hot Glue doesn't get brittle and if done correctly doesn't leak either. Give this guy his chops, he just built a mini canister which you can't buy in this size for less than an Azoo turtle canister. and it has adjustable speed on the motor. So show me a canister filter with a brushless DC pump motor with variable speed?

I don't care about companies, I care about experience. I used Red Devil brand 100% silicone (just make sure it doesn't have mold and mildew inhibitors) to seal all of my tanks, and they're doing fine for a couple of years now and not killing anything to the best of my experience. Just because someone recommends something over the internet/youtube because they had good experience with it doesn't mean it's the only product that will work.

The video was okay but cutting the water pump power cable and adding the converter LED display isn't necessary. Even cutting the filter fiber or sponge section of the canister filter model isn't necessary. The water pump power cable whether the end is an voltage plug or a USB end can be attached to power extension cord and/or a USB connector attached to the wall and if you want timing options you can add a timing plug in between the power cable and the wall socket. The exit of the water pump power cable could have been simply glued over rather than locating a plastic cylinder to secure the hole. You didn't have to cut 2 separate tubing sections to go from the top of the canister to the bottom. You only needed one. The filter fiber doesn't have to be circular or even form fitting as long as there's enough to cover the area at the bottom and top of the canister. By creating 2 or 3 screened circular separators you can better restrict water flow. The cost and effort factor in creating this is the main reason most people will not try this method. If you reduce the cutting and electronics, you can make this a more doable project for the masses.
@bogdyy13
@bogdyy13 4 года назад
the converter seems to be a step-down converter... and it can be used to change the flow rate of the filter... since it's a DC pump with a brushless motor, it's rotation also depends on the voltage applied to it.. lower voltage => lower speed

shouldn't the water pump sit at the bottom on the container so it actually sucks the water down to the bottom where the media is?

I used a different container, screw lid. Worked but you can't open and shut it easily, eventually me pipe's seals leaked, was sceptical about hot glue in water for a long time so used epoxy, this didn't work. Attempt to , new container, same brand as yours,,, with click lid (though mine does have that nice snap sound to it). All good accept the container leaks. So now I have spent as much as buying a proper canister filter second hand. Guys make sure that lid can close tight. Also I used rubber washer on 3 glands instead of glue. Anyone test hot glue on plastic underwater for a long time?

Thank your comment, that's right that hot glue on plastic underwater can not use long time. I has try the 302 expoxy glue, and I think it can be substiuted for hot glue. You can to see more at this link: www.amazon.com/BoKa-Store-Cyanoacrylate-Leather-Adhesive-Stationery/dp/B082DWYQVZ

Have you tried silicone 1? Literally the same stuff keeping all standard tanks together and from leaking for years. Also extremely cheap

How will that hot glue stand up to submerged continuous use? Might silicone those connects or use micro bulkhead fittings.

Yes, you're right, I have to change this hot glue with AB epoxy glue after some weeks!

Hello. Is this self-made external filter safer than a commercial external filter? Can it have losses? Thank you

utterly ridiculous, the volume of water is such that a drop of anything toxic and they are going to struggle. But a very cleaver & effective little build. maybe it could be used for something else in a bigger system. :D

It’s a nano tank. Plenty of people aquascape nano’s. If he’s going to have a nano, good on him for making a canister filter for it- it’ll be better filtration than a cheap sponge filter or hang on the back.

Problem with this is that the cup is made of polypropylene, silicone or hot glue stick don’t adhere at all. There are epoxies that work on polypropylene but they are mor expensive then buying a commercial pump and filter.

Hi, very beautiful, again :o) What is the substrate that you put at the bottom, I can not guess and as I am in France I do not always find the different things that you use and perfect it is at the level of the name that I can not identify the thing and this is the problem I am having with your videos with this same type of soil, what is it, do you have an international supplier or just in your country, if i can't find this soil precisely what can I use to make your own style terrarium? Can you inform me please?
@diyformyhome2265
@diyformyhome2265 3 года назад
This's aquarium soil only which I bought in the Plant store. In fact, I still used to made the soil that I mixed by my self My formula Soil for plant : clay : organic fertilizer as rate 3:2:1 After that, you have to incubate it thoroughly in wet environment for one month or more. It's quite similar to the soil for Terrarium style. You should be cover their surface with small-sized gravel about 3 to 4 cm thick. The gravel will keep the bottom layer of soil from leaking.

Help find a solution to my new planted talk which has now got algae . I have not yet put fish in it . I want the plants to thrive and then put fish .
@diyformyhome2265
@diyformyhome2265 3 года назад
The algae were developed when they have received light too much. I think you should decrease the time for light. (from 8 hours/day to 5-6 hours/day) And change new water for your fish tank more often ( 3 times/week), until your fish tank is stable Hope your aquarium will well development
