No ferro rod or lighter? I show you how you could get a fire going in an emergency with just your ax and a rock picked up off the ground or out of the river. Many people around the world are learning and practicing bushcraft for fun. But also- knowing these kind of skills could save your life.

I love your minimalist approach. A lot of bushcraft channels are all about expensive & elaborate equipment but you're the complete opposite; I'm truly impressed with your skills & your attitude.

Mine came with paint (or other coating) on it years ago. I'm not sure if they are still made that way. If so, a person would have to remove that in the striking area to get good sparks. But if it's old and well-used then the coating is probably mostly gone.

If you want to stop the wind from blowing your charred materials out of the tin use a bit of old window or door screening to fit over the inside top of tin. It will allow sparks to charred materials but hold materials in tin. I got this idea from NW Primate bushcraft channel go check him out he is the king of primative fire building and much more imo.

If you see a guy using gaffer tape as a wound dressing, you can bet he has class, education and breeding...and a very practical mind! And yes, I have done this in the past. :D

Thank you. Yes, I really like the Cold Steel "Trailhawk". It's very light but still has a hammer poll for light hammering tasks. It's not as good as a dedicated hammer, but not too bad. The blade will take a knife edge - no exaggeration. But with an edge that fine on a hawk, I have to be careful not to accidentally hit rocks, etc.

Can you do this with a crkt tomahawk?

It's likely. I see some of their models advertised as 1055 steel which should throw sparks. To be sure, I would take the actual tomahawk and hit it with a piece of flint or quartz. If the tomahawk head is painted or coated, you might have to remove that first.
