Bows can be made out of many type of materials and tools at low cost. in my previous videos, I built a few bows from old bicycle wheels . They can be as cool as bow made form PVC pipe especially when it can function as a normal bow or even can do bow fishing with it. I built one of bow with the inspiration from the Green Arrow bow, or Oneida compound bow. This time, I would like to present you my new folding Hawkeye Bow I made from an old rusty leaf spring which I bought at the local salvage yard and it's a also a good surival bow. I made this bow with the inspiritation fromm the bow design of Hawkeye bow in the Avangers 2012 movie. It's also an experiment as I never cut both bow limbs in half connect it with the hinges before. I wasn't sure if it ll work or shoot like a normal bow. But the result is very satisfying after test shooting it with many arrows. But to make it snap like in the movie, I think the draw weight will need to be very low or there should be no string when doing the snaping action. i think one day, I should use it to do bow fishing a long with my new hawkeye bow. It's also fun for shooting this bow vs coke. The draw weight is 50lbs at 28 inches.. Each limb is 2mm thick, 2.5cm wide and each is 50cm long before cutting each of them in half. The riser is 50 cm long and 3.5 cm thick, 5 cm wide.
In this bow making process, I let the steel cool down many time with water during the grinding. Sorry, I should have mentioned it in this video like in my provious video about Korean steel bow making. The elasticity is not affeated after lots of shooting and leaving the string unstrung, there 's no bow memory or lose of draw weight. I also did it when I tried to reduce the draw weight, originally it was around 80lbs, so grounded them thiner at the edge and thicker at the base until I got around 50lbs. it's also lots of work. i intentionally made the limbs till backward to reduce the draw weight.
In my previous video, I built a similar bow using four coil springs making the bow strong enough to shoot small games or do bow fishing. And I also show how I made the arrow rest from a PVC pipe. In my previous video I show a bow that I made out of a Leaf Spring that I found an old leaf spring at the local salvage yard. It was a good bow and more powerful than this bow.

huh that's pretty impressive. Steel has a pretty bad stenght to weight ratio compared to good bow woods, basically it springs back much slower beacause of its own mass, so i didnt expect that bow to have decent performances. The hand shock is unavoidable with such heavy limbs tho... But that was nice !
@jason_benedict
@jason_benedict Год назад
That's why the limbs should have been made of smth like fiberglass at least. But the conceptual part of this bow was turned into reality quite great...
@jeanladoire4141
@jeanladoire4141 Год назад
@@jason_benedict in medieval times they made up for the inefficiency of steel trough increasing draw weight, but of course on a non mechanically assisted bow that's not an option
@backyard.craftsman

Thanks brother for the comment. I agree with you. It doesn't peform as good as those limbs made from fiberglass or wood. but based on my experience with fiberglass and limanated recurve bow, i think it's just a bit slower, not too slow. In the medival, people tried to increase the steel limbs of the crossbow also based on the fact that the power stroke of those bows is very short, and that they couldn't make it as long as that of today's modern crossbow as they couldn't trust that their steel limbs won't break. That's what I heard from some experts in other channels.
@JakkiPi
@JakkiPi Год назад
Would carbon fiber be more optimal? Would it be too light?
@jeanladoire4141
@jeanladoire4141 Год назад
@@JakkiPi depends. The goal is to have a material that is light, elastic, and hard to bend. Steel is pretty elastic if it's well tempered and made with the right mix, it's very strong, but beacause it's so heavy it will release its energy more slowly, so basically you have to increase the draw weight a lot to have the performances of a more efficient material bow, fiberglass for exemple.

I think one way to make the bow "snap" would be to have some sort of a pneumatic lever at each "elbow" that forces a edge to slide the arms back until they lock into place. It would also need some spring loaded catches to fully secure them once in position.

Awesome build! One suggestion for the snap open effect, what if you used a locking mechanism like a flip out of switchblade knife? A catch that springs when the arms extend? You could actually get the flip out and lock to work. For the string you could try a rapid cinch, the upper portion is locked in place and the lower can be snugged into place using weight. I think you could actually build a functional snap out bow with a small change. Could be amazing, and you could sell the shit out of it to all the folks that prep and some collectors.... and some weirdos lol.

I am not a metal worker or a carpenter, but I like to do both work at home as hobby and learning. I made some furnitures from both wood and steel like once a year. I wish I had better Mig welder. It's hard to find a good one in where I live. Thanks for the sugesstion about bow makings. I tried made bow from woods before, and failed a few times as living in SEAsia it's very hard to find hard woods beside Bamboo which are good enough for bow making. I will need to order most material from abroad. So I mostly try to do something easier with available material. I hope one day I can try make other types of bows. 😀

Tap a hole in the anvil on the back of your vice and you and weld rods to a bolt to hold those jig parts in the correct axis for these projects. Like a little bent garden claw bolt.

it's very expensive and harder to find in where I live. I would like to try to convert a normal recurve bow with carbon fiber into this type to bow in the future. i ll be fun.

That's a lifetime bow. Maybe if you had grind a little les on the limbs you might have had more draw lbs. Overall that's something unique nice done.

I don't think it's a perfect precision bow or something but it looks like a perfectly usable bow, for how long, I'm not sure but surely this bow is compact enough to bring it in the forest without making contact with all the branches in the way. Also it looks good.

I hope you're using a closed grain hardwood. Not all hardwoods are actually strong. Poplar is rather soft, for instance. The term hardwood is applied rather inconsistently in relation to their hardness.
@backyard.craftsman
@backyard.craftsman Год назад
I don't know how they called it in English. It's a tropical hardwood. it's one of the most popular in SEASia for making very long lasting furniture. It's closed grain hardwood actually, but it's very heavy to carry.

I'd say try to incorporate some kind of spring loaded locking mechanism to get it to snap out like in the movie
@backyard.craftsman
@backyard.craftsman Год назад
I ve been thinking about it, but as I mentioned in the video caption, I think i can make it possible to snap without the string on. and put the string on it later. The string will be likely to keep the limbs from turning completely unless I use a very powerful spring to kick the limbs, or the bow draw weight is very light like those I saw in other channel's videos.
