I make Viking clothing, and sell all over the world, but I enjoyed this. I think that the Vikings like all medieval, did all the work in the daylight, long hours of summer, all the food growing preparation preservation such as drying pickling etc. I think the winter months were far less busy. I think that in the winter the women especially would be doing all their weaving / naalbinding.

Having horses i feel the wintermonths are so busy cramming every thing in daylight.. and in summer there is so much to do in the field and enjoying long days. Somehow theres always room for crafts! Drop your shop here in the comments so others can find you and buy your stuff!!

A great and inexpensive way of patterning and tweaking the fit. Make the paper pattern, then make a mock up out of muslin. It’s cheap and you can mark out any alterations directly on the muslin. Wool not being cheap, you can get the fit you desire ! Loved the video ♥️

That is a brilliant way of making a Thorsberg trouser pattern. I’ve never thought of that it’s a great idea. I’m going to give it a go. And you’re wrong the trousers look very good on you definitely do photo shoots. The bagginess in the seat is normal for riding a horse- I read somewhere while researching. People in those days were probably more concerned with function over form, but they still look good! Thanks for the great tutorial.

My youngest son (8) is half German and home educated, this coming year we are basing our entire curriculum on vikings and trees and I've made him some Viking outfits - interestingly he now will *only wear Viking pants that I have made him - they are the baggy type with big triangle type drop crutch, I done the traditional double fold and handsew down on all the seams so that they will last longer - I think it's this and the looseness that has him hooked as he has sensory processing issues, he now thinks all other pants are too tight and won't wear them.
@SigneofHorses
@SigneofHorses 3 года назад
🖤what a wonderful story. Modern garments especially jeans have a mix of synthetic fibres to try to make a tight fit more comfortable with just one type of cut for many different body shapes. Linen does that naturally and most handmade items are made to measure.

As i remember the Thorsbergtrousersfind is previking age but possible they wore similar trousers in the early viking age but would adopt different trousers later on. Maybe there would be some overlap in time were they wore both types of trousers. But actually we sadly have only a small number of trousers found from the viking age. But Thorsbergertrousers are great. I know some people think you should only ware historical clothing as a periodcorrect outfit and they are also bothered by modern clothing partly inspired by different historical cloths but I think thats bullshit unless you want to make a dokumentary or make a show in a museeum or want to reenact an exact historical period at an event specificly for that. My thoughts on thorsbergertrousers are that they probabely werent specificly desined for malebodyshapes even if they were worn by men. We don‘t know if they were worn by men only but the trousers that came before often weren‘t worn only men but occasionaly also found as the garnments of at least biologicaly females. And i think all this trousers are more desined to give the werer as much flexibility as possible independent of his bodyshape than fitting a certain bodyshape so i think they diden‘t need ajustment to the femalebodyform as some younger trousers would. But just my opinion on the matter i diden‘t base it on any particular studie on the matter.

As far as I understand it... In the USA pants less formal trousers, things you would not wear into the office or to a nice dinner or get together. Trousers are what you would wear to the afore mentioned occasions, or you could also say "slacks." Underwear is underwear or undies. In Britain pants are underwear :)

I am thinking about using a rus viking trousers (made with black hot washed linen) on a motorcycle (obviously worn over a protective kevlar long john (long underpants) with armored patches over the knees and hips - and you thought viking reenactors are bad in the hassle and whine about attire departments) My thinking is the rus viking trousers are or at least can be) warm (because of the many pleats and layers of cloth - I am planning to go über baggy using the full width of the cloth - 140 ish cm - for one leg), they look cool, especially since my motorcycle is a Ukrainian build old timer circa 1968). I am even contemplating a water proofed version (either using the linseed oil or black silicon/turpentine method) What are your thoughts on rus viking baggy trousers on steel steeds ??
@SigneofHorses
@SigneofHorses 2 года назад
I am totally in love with this idea!! I have no clue about the hazard of flapping fabrics. My first thoughts are to use wool, that won’t burn but singe in case of contact with hot engine parts? Also you might want to keep your inner leg straight and have the pleats on the outside front and back of your leg. I have a pair like that and they make sitting in a saddle more comfortable. I think it is a grand idea to do a modern take on a classic design. Morgan Donner recently posted a video on punk trousers after an Edwardian or Victorian pattern.

Did you cut the wool on the bias? Or is all the mobility coming from the pattern itself?
@SigneofHorses

Good question! It wasnt cut on the bias, though the pattern cause partnof the inner leg to be more on the bias. Mobility is mostly due to the pattern.

Any other trousers or pants you don’t use anymore preferable made from a fabric with a little stretch. They will do as wel. Otherwise it will be a load of measuring to draw up a pattern from scratch. Wouldn’t advise that for a beginner, but an experienced sewer can manage

Did nobody see she put the pattern together the wrong way? The straight seam of the leg part goes to the back of the trousers, and the curved side with the small strip in between is actually the front. You can also see this in the photo at 5:15, the seams right and left of the bum pad are actually completely straight and go down to the feet.
@SigneofHorses
@SigneofHorses 7 месяцев назад
I had a look and I’m pretty sure o put it together the way I intended to. It’s very possible though that my version is way more curvy than the example I showed. I’m short and curvy and most men trousers are long and lean. I hope you managed to put together your pair the right way so it suit you.
@kt1711
@kt1711 7 месяцев назад
Yes, maybe this is why it looks so weird... I needed to alter mine also quite a lot compared to the male original pattern (I made a mock up from it and could not move at all in the beginning)... I am not so super curvy, but still female... the owner of that pair must have been male and super skinny, otherwise he would not have fit into that pattern. Also, I used linen instead of wool (required by the use case) and I am actually right now hemming the last leg :-)
