In this episode of Make: Inventions I build an elevator and reenact the death-defying stunt that Elisha Otis performed at the 1854 World's Fair.
Otis had invented a safety break for elevators, but couldn't find any buyers. Everyone knew that elevators were only for cargo and were too dangerous for people to ride. To prove that his invention was safe he built a four story elevator and boarded his car in front of curious attendants. When he reached the top his assistant cut the rope with an ax. The crowd looked on as his elevator fell only a couple inches - and stopped.
In this video I show how I built one of Otis's original safety elevators and then see if it will keep me safe when the rope lets go.

You could've just show us the micro-scale model, but you went out and made something amazing! And you still managed to keep this video short and on point. It's great!

I'm an ESL teacher in Poland, and one of the lessons was about Elisha Otis and his invention. I didn't quite understand how it worked, but this video clearly explained it for me and my student. Thanks for making this.

most likely not as much as it cost to build this. if all of the viewers didnt have ad block and got 2 ads he would probably make only 100 dollars at most

I love DiResta but it's just amazing to see how much time and efford you put into this. This is quality stuff and the concept of this show would be great as a TV format... hint hint. It's too bad they show up only once a month but I totaly agree; it's not about quantity but about quality... and this series clearly shows that! Thanks again.

This is easy to see the design, and simple construction, unlike another one I saw. These lifts need a coil of rope hung up on it, for when it stops mid way, for the person to get down, and for my one, a harness and caribiner for me, so old, to get down.

Nifty concept. You should have used the other side of the hinges as the stop instead of depending on tiny bent ends, though. Use more of a sawtooth pattern in the uprights for catches. You could probably get away with less engagement and way more catches for a less harsh safety stop.

So it's like a button, but upsidedown and it was pulled/pressed by the string, and when the resion is released, the hook comes out. Basically like how a door work.

unless the spring is broken
@slimslither
@slimslither 9 лет назад
Berstich If the spring breaks the pieces would still be pushed slightly outwards due to the gravity acting on the other part. While this isn't nearly enough force to catch you if the rope broke, it probably is enough force to cause an annoying noise when the elevator is being used normally. This annoying noise hopefully resulting in someone getting called out to fix it.

Yeah, watching them do that bugs me too. The brake will immediately engage against the rails. The cables have nothing to do with it.
@nogi7028
@nogi7028 3 месяца назад
Why is Otis safety mechanism considered influential? Modern elevator does not use his design. Today in an event of an emergency, we rely on clamp brakes that clamp down onto the cables. They are not the same at all

Please check your Otis contract carefully - They MIGHT claim NO LIABILITY for consequential damages, special or consequential losses. They might also LIMIT 3rd party claims to 25% of the contract value. It might be a standard practice for Otis, but double check your contract. IF THINGS GO WRONG, YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN. Our personal experience has been that there is delay from Otis at almost every step and the contract absolves them. This ALMOST ALWAYS results in consequential damages. We were under the assumption that it's a reputed company and they might stick to their timelines and safety precautions but it was a lesson hard learnt for us. If you are a developer or a builder or just want a lift for your home, my Lawyers advice has been to make provisions for: 1. Delays upto 12 weeks from the promised date of completion. Almost always include a liquidated damages clause if you foresee a significant consequential loss from delay of delivery or execution. 2. Inadvertent 3rd party claims which might occur. Please note that Otis's contract MIGHT limit the contract value so the developer/builder might be held accountable for 3rd party claims. Eg of accidents from Otis are listed below: www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2021/Otis-Elevator-Company-Recalls-to-Inspect-Private-Residence-Elevators-Due-to-Entrapment-Hazard-Risk-of-Serious-Injury-or-Death-to-Young-Children www.chinadaily.com.cn/china/2011-11/26/content_14165786.htm mumbaimirror.indiatimes.com/mumbai/other/sobo-family-loses-sons-accident-case-against-elevator-co/articleshow/64071245.cms timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/mumbai/record-rs-6cr-payout-for-lift-accident-in-delhi/articleshow/29460794.cms www.indiatoday.in/magazine/nation/story/19870815-calcuttas-don-bosco-school-teacher-takes-on-otis-elevator-after-lift-mishap-799185-1987-08-14 OTIS MIGHT CONTRACTUALLY LIMIT THIRD PARTY CLAIMS- PLEASE DOUBLE CHECK.
